Omg My Steam Backup Restore Crashes!

I can't believe it. i just did a clean format in preparation for hl2 and obviously backed up my preloaded content with the proper backup and it crashes half way through restore!

Any ideas?

give it another wirl... if that fails, format again maybe, and try again... if THAT doesn't work, your up the proverbial creek without a paddle

Try seeing if you can obtain/extract the gcfs from the back up files manually and put them in Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps. If that doesn't work then in an emergency, just buy the ****er at the store.

people have gotta learn NOT to do system critical procedures BEFORE this damn game comes out... im not doing ANYTHING to my system, only maybe after ive had a good session out of this awesome game :smoking:

what's the program for extracting from the gcf's?

You can't run it off the steam DVD or CD you made. You have to copy the exe to desktop. I tried to do it off the DVD before to see what it's like, it crashed. Gotta copy it to desktop first.

i never put it on a cd. i copied it onto my other hard drive. I've now copied it back onto my main hd after reformat and it's in a folder i created on my desktop

I don't understand why people made backups before we got all the content. I'm just waiting till release to make a backup, that way I have everything.

You mentioned a 'proper backup'. By this do you mean the beta backup utility provided by Valve?

God, they officially released the backup utility now, but it is possible he made it when it wasn't released.

i never put it on a cd. i copied it onto my other hard drive. I've now copied it back onto my main hd after reformat and it's in a folder i created on my desktop

my backup did the same thing!
I reformated and copied it to :d also

then half way through it crashed!!

I had to start my preaload all over again at 2:00est
and its still only 57% complete, I hope I got enough time to finish...

i made the backup because i installed some new ati cat's and they screwed up my system (long story don't ask). The end result was I had to reformat.

My backup was made only a few hours ago so was with the official valve backup (right click on cs:s).

It just fails half way and i'd love it if someone could tell me why as i'm a proper hl2 fanboy and feel like crying

The backup function is buggy it also crashed on me. Luckily this was like 3 days ago haha

If the GCFs are on the disk, just copy them into your SteamApps folder. Done and done.

It's not the gcfs it's a big ass exe program
