Only game that freezes/locks PC on load screen

Hi

First I read the support page and had no luck and sent the following to steam with no reply.

..."I have had my account for several years and all my games launch/play. I paid and dled eppy 2 and waited till it reached 100% then tried to launch the game. It gave the valve logo and the steam screen then went to the load screen were it froze and locked up my PC....everytime. I read several suggestions with no luck. The last being to disenable my avast and still it locks up. Why do all my other games play and this newly dl one doesn't? Btw this is the first time I haven't bought the disc but tried the straight dl."

Anyway, the above explains my problem...I just don't get it! Why is this happening to this game and all my others work fine? Am I missing something obvious...also I never got an error message. Any help would be appreciated.

Update:

Since I tried everything I searched for and haven't had a response here yet I thought what the hell (I dual boot vista 64) I copied eppy 2 backup to vista and damn if it worked but it still freezes on XP (the orig dl). Does this help anyone with ideas how to fix the XP issue. yeah I know I can play now but its still bugs me and would be nice to know how to resolve the XP issue.
