OpenGL vs. DX...

Hmmm, intresting question eh? Probably been discussed a million times, but i've got a few questions if anybody's got the time.

Awhile ago it seemed there was an equal distribution of games that used OGL vs. those that used DX, and even many games that supported both (HL1 actually supports both).

1) It seemed that with the decline of 3DFX, all games started being created for DX only?

2) Is this because the advancement of OGL stopped while DX versions have continued to go up?

3) Is DX a superior graphics platform?

4) If i was going to look into coding, should i even consider learning OGL or just stick with DX?

Thanks for any answers.

Yeah, I believe its just becase nothing too new has come from OGL lately.

Open GL is like, for Id software related games.
Quake 2,3 etc...
Star Wars Jedi Academy
Wolfenstein ...
Direct 3d-Unreal and some games that or not related to Id.
Unreal series(Most of them, the support for OpenGL was poor.)

So, what I'd hafta say, stick with DX, OpenGL games have poor support(Well, at least the Unreal games)

DX9 craps on OGL from an extreme height.

Have u seen the DX9 effects in HL2?
The water? The shiny surfaces... drool!

Now... maybe if there was an OGL-2 it could be good :) But as it stands it's pretty dull.

The SDK doesn't! The IDE (Visual Studio) does. A lot... No, no, a whole lot. NO, I mean A LOT.

OpenGL games always seemed to run faster for me. THis could be completely way off base because I haven't read too much on it, but I think part of the shift away from OpenGL happened because it took the OpenGL committee (or whatever you want to call them) longer than it should have to integrate newer technology into the API. I think some disagreed on how to implement things, and so OpenGL was left in the dust with regards to DX for a while. I could be wrong, but I think I remember reading something about this proibably a year or two ago.

OpenGl always ran much faster for me. I think OpenGl is on the decline right now only because of the functionality and power of DX9. Although OpenGl is powerful, versatile, and hardly dull. Don't forget, the engine for DoomIII uses OpenGl and that is one very impressive engine.

i always used OpenGL because it ran smooooooth DX ran choppy and bad

will hl2 have OpenGl?

I dunno how OGL performs on that card compared to DX, I'd suggest whatever looks and runs the best on a application basis. I imagine for a while DX9 will look better, but OGL will probably get another version that will have similar or better effects and games will all be made for that and then DX13 will come along and so on. So yeah, use whatever you find works best, though in HL2 and that card I'd probably insist on DX mode (if the full version gives options) as DX9 seems to be what its been written specially for

Half-Life runs like Poopy on Direct X... And I have a 9800 pro.... :frown:

Half Life was made on the Quake engine, it had bad DX support :/
