Opening the HL2 Preload gcf

Me too, and i have the same problem (goodbye 1337 status)
 
You can't open the preload GCF from the dialog menu. Just double-click the file from within Windows Explorer.
 
I have it open. its full of .vtf and .vmt files under a directoy called hl2/materials. There are only materials, no models, no maps, no anything else. The only way to open the files is to figure out the format and write a viewer. I doubt this can be accomplished before release so there isn't really much point to it. Valve also mentioned that the files are encrypted.

BOLLOX, jeez people, please read other posts before you write anything--models can be opened and you can see their animations too, just use frigging hl modding tools

Great, tell me what directory the models are located in the "base source shared materials.gcf" file. I would love to know. All I see are materials. Oddly enough, it isn't a big surprise considering the name of the file "base source shared materials".
