this thread is inspired by all the intelligent posts about O/S's in the "HL2 to Linux Petition" thread.
the idea of *some day* having an O/S that either was made in collaboration the popular companies (that created Linux, Windows and other O/S's) and/or a company that steps up to the plate and designs such an O/S which is aimed at specific audiences (for example, for gamers u have the Gamers version of the O/S, for pple in the video/movie/sound industry u have the 3D Animation version of that O/S and etc.. etc..) so basically have 4-5 verions of this O/S catering to different audiences.
okay, so ur first reaction is probably "dude, such an O/S would take forever to design and would definitely take ALOT of financial resources"
ya, i know.. and thats why i suggested the idea of 2-3 companies working together on such a project.
i guess this sorta thing would only happen in a perfect world...but after reading some of the arguements in that Petition thread had me thinking that if u put together some of the good things of one O/S and some good things of another O/S, u can have a fair neat O/S without all the problems pple have pointed out in that thread.
Please present ur views without flaming.. i would like to get a general idea of what pple think about the scenerio i have given...
i did also have questions for the Linux experts on this forum.. im not familar with Linux, i installed it once about 6-7 years ago and thats about it..
1. which flavor of Linux would be easiest and most compatable (with non-Linux softwares)
2. i read about Gentoo and Debian and am interested in more info on them, where to look?
3. how friendly is Linux flavors of O/S with the new hardware out these days? i know back when i tried installing Linux that one time, it wasn't too happy with a USB mouse (USB ports, and mice were new tech then)
thanks in advance
