How many processes have you got running in the background? I saw someone say 16-17 processes is about all you should be running at startup, but I've got 35! can I get rid of anything here (I labeled some processes that you might not find in your list ie. the non-system ones)?

I have 47... but I had even more before I got rid of Norton

Meh all I have to say is ditch norton. Now. (jk...iunno if it's that bad, but I use Zone Alarm and I think it does a better job)
I have 28 going atm, but at startup I'd have around 24.

I have about 50 at startup. NOD32 processes, BeyondTV, F@H (x2), G15 software, ATI tray tools etc. Gets closer to 55-60 when I'm doing stuff.

I like to have 23 before I open my instant messaging programs.

Do you have the Zone Alarm Internet Suite? You know, the one with the antivirus.

I have Zone Alarm Pro without the antivirus. I would like to know if its worth it to upgrade.

Heh. I never said I bought it.

:O

So far I haven't had any problems with viruses and I've been using it for nearly a year now.

Minus the ones I have yet to block on startup, I have 28 processes. 3 of them are for my G15, one for NOD32, one for TeaTimer (Spybot tool), one for ObjectDock, one for my wireless NIC, and the rest are system processes.

I have 49 running on startup. Logitech setpoint, norton (getting rid of soon) ati, creative etc etc

What are you getting instead?

Get AVG. Norton and McAfee suck. AVG free has found stuff that neither of those two have before, in my experience.

Not to mention the obvious...

Light memory footprint

One feature of AVG that makes it popular with its users, is that it is very light on the system and does not slow it down notably like other anti-virus software. Resource use is low, the Professional Edition requires only 16MB RAM and 20 MB of space on the hard drive.

The Internet Security version which contains antivirus, firewall, antispyware, antispam and antiphishing requires only 64 MB RAM; compared to say Symantec's Norton Internet Security which requires 256 MB RAM.

I've been recommended trend micro pc-cillin by a good friend and network engineer, uses significantly lower system resources and is apparently quite thorough, so i'm going to give that a look.

START>RUN>MSCONFIG

i would not messabout with this unless you know what you are doing.

NOD32 is by far the best Anti-Virus, I say so because I've tried Kaspersky, Norton and AVG all for over 2 months at least, install NOD32, scan, oh look, 3 viruses the others didn't pick up. :p

404 Error

I need to get rid of shitty ass Mcaffee. I had AVG on my old comp but have just been using Mcafee because my comp came with a 3 year subscription.
The link works. After it loads the 404 error just click up in the address bar and hit enter. It loaded for me.

That's what happend with my brothers PC. He used Norton and he thought he had a virus (software wasn't picking anything up). He grabbed the trial of Nod32 and it got it.

On my brand new unused Harddrive I just put in, there is only 13 when I end process on everything that isn't needed..

Hm, I've installed AVG, but overlooked the fact, that the free version has no firewall! D: I'm looking for an alternative to the Norton firewall now. I rarely scan for viruses tbh and don't find much when I do, cause Norton Internet Security was stopping any shit from getting on my PC.

I'm not sure how good or crappy window XP's service pack 2 firewall is... but i've had no problems so far with it.

I gave ZoneAlarm a second chance but it blew it again. Once I start CS:S the menu doesn't load fully and the PC locks up. No problem with ZA turned off.

I have 6 processes running at startup and 28 during heavy usage..

What's wrong with you people?!!

What the hell? I get more system related processes than that, alone. Screenshot, pls, or tell me what are those 6 processes.

I can't see that being possible with out any conflicts or AV/FW software.

Yeah. That's just not possible to have 6 processes running. Then jump to 28? wtf

I have around 21 on startup. Have 23 now with AIM, IE, and a video editing program open. Running NOD32 Antivirus, I love it. I disabled dumb start up items (msconfig) and disabled uneccessary services (services.msc). The words in the () you type in the Run dialog box to get to the items, just read up on what to disable since you don't want to disable just everything.

I have 24 at startup and maximum of 34 at any one point as I dont like to overwork the CPU. Im not running a Pentium 75 either ;)

I use Avast! Antivrus and it has always worked for me. It also keeps itself updated while running so you dont have to touch it. I dont keep it running though as I need the full speed of my computer most of the time.

As for not having a Firewall, Windows XP SP2 coes with one and it has never failed me. Other than that get a router with a built in Firewall if you want that bit more protection. I am currently using a Netgear DG834GT with a built in Firewall and its ace.
