could someone please tell me without the bs about needing to upgrade what i should have my video and audio setting on for hl2 and cs-s,

the system recommends that i have everything on medium except shaders which is low and shadows which are on high and it also recommends simple reflections.

my specs are :

Amd athlon XP 3000+

DirectX9.0 or better

512ddr ram

bus : AGP 8X

memory : 128mb

Nvidia GeForce FX5200

i hope thats all you need to give me an answer...

thanks for the help in advance :bounce:

surely i can have some of the options runs higher than that?

it runs virtually perfect now with the recommended settings, i just wanted to get it running the best that it can.

cmon you can do better than that :D

So you actually have the game? Why not try adjusting the setting yourself and seeing how well it runs?

Go to the begining of the game when you first enter the street from the station adjust the settings see how well it runs before it starts to slow.
Or go to a level where theres a big fire fight.

You should be able to kick all the options up a notch and you should be fine. and remember to keep V- sync "OFF"

Yea try cranking everything up by yourself and seeing your FPS changes (cl_showfps 1) and then you can make your own analysis, it's different for every person (yay we are all unique!)

yeh i have the game, im just new to pc gaming thats all, with the recommended settings im running at 60 to 70fps at 800 x 600 resolution

is it decent enough?

One way to test it is to turn the ai off and start spawning a bunch of NPCs then turn it back on, and see if they fight. If it jams, then turn it down. :) As you can see, I am bad at explaining things.

sorry about being a noob guys but does this go in the console?

cl_showfps 1

if your looking to upgrade, that graphics card is very low end, and the ram is on the small side aswell.

vsync caps the fps rate right?
but without it on my screen gets tearing- is that cos its a cheap monitor? i.e. would a better monitor allow me to get higher framerates without tearing?

Mx440 64mb is better then a fx5200

No, it's not.
5200= DX8
MX440= DX7.

Well as you say you're looking for "optimal" performance, and it's running "perfectly" as it is. Why are you here?

Plus.. the human eye can't see more than 30fps - so 60-70fps is stupid.

I've answered your question there, so work out what do do now...

Edit: Woot, 200 posts!
