Does anyone know how this card will run? I just spent a good amount of money at newegg so does it run CS:S on full or at 1024x768 with everything on? Please tell me if you can and I know its not a top of the line card like the 6800 ultra nividia card but thats all I can get for now.

The 9800XT can run HL2 and CSS very well. You can even use a little AA and AF if you know what those are.
You should be able to run the textures and reflections at High Quality.

Of course your system has to be taken into account for how well it will perform under those settings.

Thanks for the quick response really I just spen alot of money and thats releaveing news. And I know what AA and AF are. My other system specs are 2.8 Intel with HT and 512 ram. Will the ram affect the preformace?

Do you have 2 256MB sticks or 1 512MB stick?

Your average frame rate should be about the same if you had 512MB or 1GB. But what 1GB would give you is no system lag when you walk into a open room and it has to load the data from the harddrive for this new area and also very quick boot/level load times etc (Like inbetween sections in HL2).

Your ram will be good enough, but if u got 512MB more you'll probaly notice a slight increase in frames but not by much maybe 5-8 FPS. By the way how much did u buy the 9800XT for cause on the ATI website the 9800XT costs as much as the X800XT P.E. $499 USD

I bought my 9800 XT for 325$ includeing shipping and handiling and I figured a 9800 XT would be enough.

edit: I have 2 sticks of 256 ram

dont u just hate it wen u buy a card then a day later someone tells you bout a cheaper version of what essentially is the same product.....

Its the same only if you OC and I am not good at that yet and don't have a good case or fans to support so my choice is better for me.

Upgrading your memory might be more trouble than it's worth. Especially if you would have to replace both 256MB sticks.

I'd have to look it up but you might be able to put both 256MB sticks on one channel and use a 512MB stick on the other to keep it running in dual channel mode. Not sure if that is possible with your board. I know it is with the nForce2 board for AMD CPUs.

What is your Chipset or Motherboard model?

shoulda asked for vid card advice before buying. live and learn i guess.

i did ask for advuce and I see no falt in my decision whats wrong with the 9800 XT and as for the price I dont really care I had the money and I work and this was the best card for me bacause newer cards would be bottlenecked wit my system.

You should have bought a GeForce6800 (not GT\U) for about 300$.

I forgot to mention I wanted a ATI thats why I did not get the 6800 non GT or Ultra.

im hyped about 3 things:

1. HL2 went gold
2. my new sig
3. my PC:

1.8ghz P4
768mb ram
Radeon 9600XT

peep the siggeh..

While that is true, did you really expect me to read the entire list of oft-repeated details so that I can make sure this guy who has already bought his video card doesn't get a product I was not aware existed? Why would someone buy a "budget" Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB? I had heard of the 128MB version, but somehow doubt it was more than a typo. Maybe I'm wrong, but you sure are hostile for someone with the pretense of wanting to help someone.

Learn how to punctuate.

You did not make a bad choice. It's a very solid performing card and can beat the 6800 at times when running AA/AF depending on the game.
People will jump on you if you did not make the choice they would have made. Whether it was not optimal to their tastes or not the right reasoning.
Sometimes it's hard to remember that people may not want to spend so much even if it's the 'best deal'. As long as it gives them the performance they want, they paid for it after all.

I've been thinking about the experience, more than performance, and wish I would have waited for an ATI card to get back instock rather than jumping on the 6800GT. Miss how my 9800Pro handled.

what do you mean spend so much? the 6800nu is CHEAPER than the 9800xt not more, the 6800nu and 9800xt trade blows, but in the end the 6800nu is better overall, plus it supports more features. and the 6800gt is a measly $40 more. much more future proof.

brand loyalty is just dumb. it really hinders you from getting the best deal for your $. nowhere have i said the guy got gipped, 9800xt is a good card, no doubt, it just wasn't the best buy.
