I have just bought a new computer:

1gig ram
2.8 pentium 4 w/ hyper threading
p4p deluxe motherboard

...but I ordered the video card seperatly, and it isn't here yet.

Would it be possible to play HL over a lan just on the software?
Would it overheight the cpu or anything?

Any advice is welcome. thanks.

.... you shouldnt be able to run the computer at all without a video card
And no, you couldnt use another computer's video card over LAN, you can run the game from someone elses computer, but it will use your video card.

yeah, you cant get the monitor to work without the video card, or at least that is my experience

It would be smart to wait before you got your video card so you can properly set up your system (ie drivers).

Anyways, you won't be able to play HL or any other game unless you motherboard has an onboard video card or you reused an older video card from a previous computer. You should wait until your video card arrives.

Sorry, i mean an intergrated video card that sux... my bad

Also, when I mean play HL over a lan, I mean multiplayer, we have two computers.

Sorry for being so unclear.

You can play hl with an integrated video card, and if you HL on both computers it should work.

HL can run in Software mode which gives horrible graphics but will run pretty quickly on ur pc no matter what cards in there :p

When you say horrible graphics what do you mean?

800x600 16bit color 30fps?

Or what?

no, more like 640x380 16 bit color 10-15 fps.

You can select the res which goes up to 1280x1024, Ive just tried this on my PC which only has a 1 gig Athlon and 512MB RAM and I got 15 fps :p but its still ugly even at that resolution. :>

Are you sure the P4p dlx /has/ onboard video? My suggestion is just to wait so you can set it up properly.

do you know what you ordered for a video card?

If your using the computer now and dont have a video card in the PCI or AGP slot, then you have onboard video, which means %99 of the time you wont have an AGP slot, which means you will never have a good gaming machine or get good fps ever on that PC until you switch out the mobo.

If you have no AGP slot, return the PC as soon as possible

I playeD HL1 for like a year in software mode.. I dont see why you wouldnt be able to. (and I played online with 56k)

Software...Ouch.

I started out on my ATI AIW (Rage) 128 Pro 16MB PCI card.
I'm sure your onboard is better than that...lol
I would hope so.

My first computer had a 4mb S3 card and I played through HL in software mode fine :)

Course it looked like crap and played worse, but it was fun. Year later I saw it in action on a friend's 32mb TNT2 :D

Yeah, return it if there's no AGP. I bought a Dell with integrated graphics and now I'm stuck with a Geforce FX5200 which is terrible. I might have to get a whole new computer because the Dell probably won't work with a new AGP motherboard.
