Those blur effects are 10X better:

Yea, I know I'm being over critical, but it's just an observation.

The blur is most likely a post-processing effect that was never even in the engine, and i'm not sure I prefer Chell being long-sighted.

ya it was removed for performance reasons. i would still lke to have had it though. i f**kin hate it when developers shows a trailer which is usually a render for some games and it looks better then the final version.

Is there some means of enabling a render mode within the console?

nope, dont think so. had a look at hr commands, and couldnt see anything, and I like the purple effect on the portals

I bet you will be able to enable depth of field in the sdk or something. You can see that effect being used in a bunch of the TF2 meet the characters videos

For some reason in Portal the Motion Blur doesn't work for me on non-custom made maps. It's enabled and all, but i can't see it at all. When i played the Bethseda custom map i noticed that there was motion blur.

I think the old portals looked like shit, the new ones are x10 better.

mat_motion_blur_falling_intensity [0-?]

mat_motion_blur_falling_max [0-?]

mat_motion_blur_falling_min [0-?]

mat_motion_blur_forward_enabled [0-?]

mat_motion_blur_percent_of_screen_max [0-?]

mat_motion_blur_rotation_intensity [0-?]

mat_motion_blur_strength [0-?]

The above commands control the intensity of the motion blur effect if enabled (See In-Game Settings). The higher the value assigned, the more noticeable the blur effect. For example to alter the general motion blur you see when you turn around, alter the mat_motion_blur_rotation_intensity from its default of 1 to something like 2 or 3 to increase the blur effect. Alternatively you can lower the value to reduce the effect, e.g. to 0.5. Note however that there can be a minor drop in performance as well as added hitching/jittering from raising this too high.
from tweakguides.com I just increased the values of all of those by a bit and saw a huge difference :)

Ooh, thanks for that. One question, though, does it reset each time you exit the game?

You could always plug those commands into a CFG file.

Plus, they didn't really fit the clean, clinical feel of the aperture science facility.

As for Crysis, what did you expect? Did you expect that much of a graphical leap from Far Cry?

To be honest, I do not think the source of the image can be seen as valid.

First of all the lighting is different because they are completely different scenes on different time of day settings. Here the guide how to give the level nearly the same lighting as in the E3 06 demo: http://www.crysis-online.com/forum/...3339f083087046edeb43d78493c053&topic=13081.40

Second as for the graphical quality: Just look at the following video created by a user of our community: http://www.gametrailers.com /player/usermovies/127682.html?playlist=featured

As you can see the quality & the framerate IS the same (if not better) in the final game :)

Third, as for the framerates: It heavily depends on the machine you are running the game on. It needs to be ensured that the system has the latest (beta) drivers of the graphics card installed. Yet we are still having some slight issues with the lack of driver support of Vista, but the hardware manufacturers are working on this problem to get it solved as quickly as possible.

Also have a look at our config tweak summary: http://www.crymod.com/thread.php?threadid=10531. It shows how beautiful the game is looking by having a prettey decent framerate.

I hope that clarifies that topic :)

As for portal's graphics, I think it was done mostly for effect in post-proc. To my knowledge, DOF is not implemented in the current source build.

I couldn`t disagree more. I think the new portals look so boring compared with the old ones.
Depends which old ones you mean, it was rare to have a new screenshot or video that didn't have a different Portal effect. I do really like the one they settled on for the final game, many of the others were too noisy for my tastes.
