The NV40 line is actually cheaper to produce for nVidia than the NV30 line, so I'm sure they have no problem moving ahead with the new line.

hmm, this is very strange indeed. nVidia have their cards out and in good supply, ATi have yet to get their X800 XT's, and even X800 Pro's out in any decent number. A lot of people have already gone with nVidia because they can't be bothered waiting, so this share drop comes as a great suprise. I doubt nVidia will go under any time soon though.

I theorise that it's got something to do with business outside of the graphics card market.

Well, ATI released their X800 Pro/XT cards and they were all bought right away and backordered so there was money flow there. The X800Pro's have been leaking in everywhere since then.
The 6800GT's have just recently been coming into the market.
