Even more interesting is that an Xbox 360 console trade-in will only fetch 15,000¥ ($128), which matches the trade-in worth of a PSP Value Pack and a slim-line Silver PS2. The older model DS are still somewhat difficult to find in Japan and will score you 14,000¥ ($119) at Enterking.

As a person who visits quite a lot of used video game stores in the Tokyo area, I can't say that I am suprised. The Xbox 360 sections are always well stocked with used consoles and games. Even titles like Dead or Alive 4 and Ridge Racer 6, which were supposed to be big hits with Japanese gamers, are in ample supply can be picked up used at a bargain price (under $30, usually).

As much as I'd like to see the Xbox 360 succeed in Japan, I won't shed too many tears, just as long I can continue to score used 360 game deals like King Kong for $17 and Need for Speed for $25. Even the import 360 games aren't holding their value

anyone want to take a trip to tokyo and buy me a used 360? at $128 each I'll take 2

Wow. I would totally invest in one right now if they had them for sale at those prices over here! Nothing I would really want to play yet though except GRAW maybe since its not out for the PC yet. Still, it would be a forward-thinking investment. Hopefully in the next year they will have at least a handful of kick-ass titles...not like it will matter since these prices won't come over here anytime in the foreseeable future...;(

lawl, I still wouldn't buy one for $128

I would buy it for that price, it's pretty reasonable to pay 128,- for a nextgen console.

Japanese 360 games aren't region locked, are they? Could be some bargains to be had here.

I dont know ...the writer of the article bought some so it must work for him

I would definately buy the 360 for $128 ..that's less than the first xbox 5 years after it was released ..I'm a sucker for a bargin

Bargain. I may even pick up a second one once they can be modded.

Microsoft don't understand culture. You have to Japanify titles. If it looks western then hire a bunch of Japanese artists to funk it up so it looks visually appealing. Like Cs:neo, looks like rubbish to me but that style goes down well in Japan.....apparently.

heh I read an article about localising Counter strike for the Japanese market and no shit it was much like the above pictures

http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20060327/waugh_01.shtml

"Another crucial feature – the one this lecture seemed like it might have been about – was the way Counter-Strike looked. Its whole presentation screams "Western PC game", which in turn causes the average Japanese gamer to scream "Eek". The characters are gritty, burly, and not particularly appealing – so Namco got an artist to anime them up a little, replacing sweaty gringos with guys in primary-colored spandex and PVC shoulderpads, and hairy guys in fatigues and ski masks with antigravity-busted women in three square inches of purple nylon.

Similarly, Taninami decided that Japanese gamers would freak at the game's anti-terrorism angle – especially if the terrorists win a match – so he changed the scenario to a struggle between two opposing factions: the CSF and the NEO (leading to the game's new appellation, "Counter-Strike NEO"). And of course, because PC games have virtually no presence in Japan outside of porn and obscure doujin soft (amateur freeware), the keyboard-and-mouse controls had to be finessed a little. CS NEO uses a custom-built keyboard, with all the controls and hotkeys specially labeled.

There's also the issue that basically all people do in Counter-Strike is shoot each other – which should get boring after a while – so Taninami added a suite of single-person missions and mini-games; completing these modes gives a player special prizes. There are also a number of in-game events timed to various holidays and seasons, such as cherry blossoms that cascade in the spring. As for the game content itself, "we didn't want to change it; we didn't want to ruin it.""

shoot the ...ummm counter-neos and have gin blossoms reward your uber skill

Lol @ the pic. Good for me i like both styles.

I personally don't mind "anime-style", it is the fact that they hate "normal" so much that really freaks me out. Japan is one of the weirdest countries in the world, and much of their weirdness is of the bad kind. :borg:

I'm sure they will be saying the same about Western Civilisation.

The games on the 360 don't interest me, I haven't seen one game that I want (apart from Condemned which is being ported to PC).

The only weird thing we have and they don't that I can think of is buttsechs.

I'm not an expert in buttsechs, but I'm pretty sure they have buttsechs.

Not speaking from experience here.

They probably do have it, but it is still extremely taboo, unlike in the west where no pr0n-flick is complete without it.

I could go into more detail, but that may be a tad too off topic... :dork:

Tentacles anyone?

Anyway, it's nationalism. The Japanese would rather play a game on the Playstation or Nintendo than an Xbox, even if the Playstation or Nintendo game sucked royally.

if that were true why would americans buy the playstation? you'd be hard pressed to find a more nationalistic country than the US

The us is very patriotic on the surface while Japanese nationalism has very deep roots (and a very very dark past).

yes while I do agree that it could part of the issue, it's not the whole issue ...japanese gamers just dont like the majority of western games, specifically fps

LOL, only those japs could turn a game about killing the other side for money into a game with flowers.

BTW, the pick above is hilarious. Look at the contrast and the realism of those models and what those crazy japs used instead. Hilarious!

It's not that those models are western (they are), but they are accurate depications of people. Seriously, how can you look greyhound in the eye and say he looks like a normal human being on a battlefield???? CS and CS:S, while not good depications of modern warfare/gun physics, at least tries to model some aspects on real life. CS:Neo is just a bastardized jap version. It takes everything that makes CS CS and corrupts it.

I find the fact that CS has to be "anime'd" to be appealing very lame. Honestly, WTF is wrong with those people.

I like anime by the way.

Agreed. Japan is far more insular that the US. They borrow what they like, and ignore the rest (a bit of a simplification/generalisation)

Nobody expected the 360 to do well in Japan. The sales certainly have little reflection the quality of the system.

"On the other end of the karma stream are cheap hits. Hiding and sniping are no-nos; Taninami wants to encourage players to always fight fair, and shoot each other from the front. The system can detect when a player shoots someone from behind, and will send a warning. If a player is camping, again with the warning; if the player persists, he will show up on the radar. Taninami is fascinated that even with this disadvantage, still some players persist at misbehaving."

I don't like when campers, turtlers, etc. are discriminated against!

But seriously, shooting someone in the back, WTF! Are you supposed to nicely ask to turn around if you happen to come up behind a player?

LMFAO read this:

HAHAHAHAAHAHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

That reminds me of that Something Awful(I think) review on CS. Anyone that doesn't rush straight at you with a knife is a camper. :D
