Outdoor/Enviornment textures a little blah?

I think it looks fine, besides as long as the buildings and indoor environments look so amazing, I don't care.
 
Nope, they use deformable terrain, i.e. you have vertex handles in a brush, and you raise/lower the terrain in these specific spots (think rolling hills), so you can achieve much more realistic terrain.

Yes, that is correct. Redundant, what you are seeing are .ql/gl brushs/models being scaled of up to a 16:1 unit. Play Tribes 1 or 2 for a BASIC, BASIC example of this.

This is part of a reason why HL2 will run great on low end systems...but not the reason of course.
 
1 ghz machine, 128 ram and GF2.

That's the minimum spec. That's the compromise.
 
You can do some pretty complex terrain with HL1, but it really doesn't have any applicable use unless you want super freakish compile times. Most people don't do complex terrain/brush work simply because they don't know how to use vis blockers/hint brushes/vertex manipulation. Carving is out of the question for complex terrain. I just hope people realize that the new hammer tools are not going to streamline and baby feed map making to you. Don't expect to be able to make great looking maps without experience. Sure it will make a lot of things easier, but nothing is going to come from instantly booting it up.

I wish more people would get Hammer NOW, and start making maps for HL1/NS/CS/etc. Learn hammer itself, and more importantly the entities. Master when to use vertex manipulation/carving. Learn how to apply and scale textures...etc.

HL1 is old but it ins't terrible.

Source mapping will be supreme, atleast in my opinion.
 
Polykarbon - dude, the landscapes in HL2 aren't done with brushes, it's a heightmap - like Battlefield and Far Cry.

sigh...

I was just showing an example for HL1 mapping with vertex manipulation...which I said like 100 times =p.

My point in being was that people keep saying they are going to do X and Y maps for source...without any experience in hammer.

btw--Just keep in mind its not just height fields...

knowing mapping myself..master the map making first and THEN the entities, half of em will be changed anyway and their easy to learn, making good maps, thats the hard part
 
meh...thats where I disagree I suppose. But; just depends on personal opinion of learning :cheers:
