Explain please? Didn't valve say that you could purchase DoD: Source through Steam by itself? "Available via Steam for just $19.95" (from http://steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&id=441) So infact they can play DoD: Source
Yes they can, but those people who bought retail don't have credit cards (or like the box or some other reason) thus they can't buy dod:s through steam and won't be playing dod:s through steam.

And i don't think too many people are going to buy that retail pack of css/hl2m/dod:s. Creating a new account and buying the same thing again is stupid.

Just think about the demographics of gamers for a second. What kind of people play cs or dod for 3, 4 or 5 hours a night? Teenagers mainly. Those guys fill up servers, create communities, clans, etc. Though it's true the average gamer is a 30 something male, teens play games obsessively. The credit card guy who probably has a 5 day a week job, has very little time for games. He can play a few hours a week, a bit more on the weekend. But he relies on those teens to pack the server so he has people to play with. Those teens aren't going to be there for dod:s. It's going to be the silver/gold credit card casual gamers.

Does anyone think there's some logic behind that or is it complete garbage. I think there's logic in it. I play cs:s a lot and i know who fills the servers. It's not men with credit cards. It's whiny teenage kids who bought the retail edition at eb games or some other store.

good logic

I agree that the logic is bad. But as another poster already said. You don't need a cc, you can use certain debit cards. And if not, then get your parents to buy it for you and you give them the money. And if not, i'm sure over time you will be able to buy the game retail.

I got my mommy to pay $10 for the silver package with her cc :|

I'm sure many 'whiny teens' will also be able to get their parents to buy it through steam for them...

also...

Are you sure? I mean it only makes sense tor make it available in stores...It's just that I didn't know if it was official or not...

Edit: uh...basically just what ViperAnus said

Using a credit card to buy a game on line is basically the same as going to a store. DoD:S will be available in the store. For every one kid w/o a card there are hundreds w/access to mommy and daddy's card. Also...DOD demographics skew older (always have) than other games so I think this is a non-issue. eBay and all the other e-commerce sites that are florishing understand the model...as does Valve. For all the complaining you hear concerning Steam it's funny how millions of customers continue to use it succesfully and have used it to order the games.

I see no downside to this at all. BTW...that original link is over nine months old so it's hopelessly out of date. Sales of HL2 have been strong all over the country and I'll bet Valve is raking in the cash.

I think they're going about this rather shabbily ...DoD:S will have a much smaller audience then it did before when it was sold seperately ..they should have bundled it with aftermath or better still thrown it in with TF2 :E

Just tried to pre-order with Steam and was denied. It said my credit card was used too many times on Steam but I have never used it(I have retail collector's edition) nor are there any inconsistencies on my CC statement. Very strange and potentially disturbing. I guess I will have to email Steam Support unless any of you have a better idea....

Huh? Us retail owners DO play all Valve games through Steam, just like everyone else.

Man, that gets me all excited.

"The Source Pack"

Includes:

Counter-Strike: Source
Team Fortress 2
Day of Defeat: Source

I'd buy it.

What a poor idea to hav different packages each with more than the last. There should have been one package and thus everyone getting dod through steam for free. Thats how it shoud work..ach the hassel of now having to purchase through steam, dod is worth it tho...great game

Boy do i hate being right all the time.

Day of Defeat 3,976
Day of Defeat: Source 1,545 and sinking

There is no next-generation of dod players coming through. All the 1.3 players are sticking to 1.3 and the mature working credit-card wielding casual gamers played the game for the first few days then stopped. Now player numbers are dropping, shrinking daily.

Imagine dod:s had been available to all hl2 retail packs.

Ahh well. Quite a monumental stuff up imo.

Hey but why can't people with bronze just upgrade to silver for 10,-

As long as there are still enough people playing DOD:S for a good game, I really don't care, because I'll be one of the ones playing.

As long as there is a choice between about 50 different servers with relativly different settings, I don't care.

I just hope we get dods (and eventually tf2) with aftermath. It's ok for me if tf2 comes with the expansion after aftermath though. No way I'm buying the retail dods package as it now (dods, hl2dm, css), that is just buying two games I already have. And I'm not going to buy dods from steam, that would mean dad had to pay use his cc, and if I lose my steam password, username, email or so (ie. in a harddrive crash) I would have to buy dods again (I know there's a possibilty to back up my games, but duh)

As long as you keep your account details, you don't need to re-purchase; the only inconvenience would be downloading all the content after a drive died or whatever

Using your logic as backdrop for my argument:

Premise 1: Teenagers make up most of the CSS/DODS demographic (according to you)
Premise 2: Half-Life 2 is rated M for Mature
Premise 3: Sale of mature rated titles is restricted from minors, (Assumption: This is enforced)
First conclusion and fourth premise: An adult must be involved in the purchase
Premise 5: Most adults have credit cards
Final conclusion: Based on your premise that teenagers make up the CSS/DODS demographic, they also have acess to a credit card either way since an adult is always involved in the purchase, and hence have the ability to make the purchase through Steam.

This applies to me :). I'm 15, I bought HL2 retail, and purchased DODS through steam using my dad's credit card with his permission.

Want to compare those numbers to the Counter-Strike ones?

Counter-Strike:57, 158
Counter-Strike Source: 25, 518

So the ratios are approximately the same, yet Counter-Strike Source was provided in the package that all million of those whiny teenagers purchased in stores, clearly we can infer that the gap between old-school and new-school gamer has nothing to do with the availability of the product in stores.

And "sinking" doesn't matter, because they obviously purchased the game in any case, whether they stop playing won't make that precious $10/20 come back.

As I'm sure you'll be quick to point out, yes the DOD numbers are much lower. That doesn't really matter however, since they are proportional. The popularity of CSS is mainly dependent on that of CS, same with DOD. Even if you would argue the opposite, the reason there are more CSS players is because they might have purchased HL2 for the single-player, then gotten sucked in CSS, while DODS requires a seperate purchase (as explained in the previous paragraph, whether online or not makes no observable difference). And on top of it all, DODS is much much younger than CSS.

And please, don't directly jump to conclusions about how right you are, because your argument was an exemplary "Non Causa Pro Causa." It just makes you look even more ridiculous.

Yes! You are the next-generation! Carry the flame!

We need more inspired youngsters making inspired custom maps that add an original Flava to the Dod:S experience. I know i discovered dod after seeing it a friends place and downloading it for free. Where are the hordes of new dod players going to come from? They don't have the free avenue anymore. The freedom loving mod playing youngsters have been snuffed out! Tired old men with tired stale old ideas will feed the community with tired old maps and zero newness!!

May god have mercy on all your souls.

The custom maps went from an attitude of "Ooo I want to try this" to "God not another custom map".
