anyone got any ideas?

i have the same hard drive, make sure that your IDE drivers arent running it in PIO mode, but rather DMA is best. This happened to me, which resulted in constant activity, and slow search times...

nope its not that its steam allright.....

i have no idea wtf its doing. :(

Take a look in the Steam directory if hes not writing one of these dumb mdmp files. And if, kill the process with ctrl alt del
Oh and i remember that coomer (i think it was him) said that the files system was really better on NTFS formats.

that could very well be your problem, also WinXP really, and i mean REALLY works better on NTFs, so try and convert all your partitions to NTFS, that is IF you hav steam, or win XP...

i am useing xp on ntfs

its got to be a mdmp file but if i stop it with CAD next time i load steam its does it again...... it was fine the other day so why it doing it now?

and whats in them?

I expect the mdmp files to be trace things... but its a bit huge files
I'm used to delete them everytime i see one, and still dont have any problem with steam :)
