ok ive got a asus motherboard and i have at default a amd athlon xp 2000 1.7ghz ive overclocked it by the bios and am now going at 2.7 ghz this is great but im worried i wont damage the chip or anything will it ive heard asus motherboards will just switch the pc off to avoid any damage i also have asus probe and that is keeping an eye on the temperature its at 53c is this ok?? should i try it with games or will it just over heat?? it seems pretty stable to me and booted up fine

well you have to try running it at full stress or in a game...if its idling at 53 it might be really high in a game...so go play a game for an hour or something and come back and post the temps under stress

so should i play far cry or somthing for like half hour then come back ? also do i take the temps after ive finished playing the game?

What are you using for cooling? I would upgrade your cooling first if itsnt very good however check your BIOS for a "shut system down at certain temperature" option and set it to something reasonable and yes just play it for a while and check the temp. Also try running something intensive and loop it like CPU burn in for a while and keep checking the temp.

I have an athlon XP 2500+ running at 2GHz with stock cooling and im getting 45degrees idle

over 85 degrees C and you cpu WILL burn out as the glue conecting expands

but anything over 60 as a load temp is not good aim to be under 55

edit : 2.7 ghz is a pretty amazing overclcok what is your multipler fsb, vcore ??? is it totally stable ???

Run prime 95 for a few hours, this will give you your full load temp aswell as if the program crashes it will give youa hint that your porcessor is unstable,

edit2 : My temps on my rig ( see sig) are 37 cpu case : 29 and im listening to music on msn and here so it bascially idle

i have an asus i can change my mhz frequency or can manually do it in my bios by setting v core etc how can i manually set it so that i can run at 2ghz what are the v core settings and fsb multiper or what ever lol any1 know where a guide is
im at 52c idle

Nice overclocking so far man, yeah like the other guy said. Of your idling at 53c you don't know what you could be getting ingame. Maybe you should try getting more cooling OR better cooling just to be on the safe side?

goss, :)

ok im back if i lower the v core setting so i get less power will that take away some of the heat?

Wow, 1.7ghz to 2.7ghz that's a huge overclock man. I don't think there are even an Athlon CPU's yet that can hit 2.7ghz, though the clock speed doesn't matter that much with them, but still nice OC.

ok in the end i wasn't really happy the full load temp was a bit to high so im now down to 2ghz so ive got a amd athlon xp 2000
overclocked to 2ghz  i get a idle of 49c which im sure you will all agree is fine and a full load of about 55c so thats ok to im still just testing it etc to make sure im fully stable but im happy with the results so far thanks for the help guys!!! :D
