I posted this in another thread but i didn't get a response so i figured i would be unlazy and actually make a new thread and ask it here. This has probably been asked before (Like the majority of the questions on this site :-/) but i couldn't find it. When playing half life one i was always bothered when i would shoot barney in the foot with my sniper rifle (Op4) and he would spin around and die. That really confused me :-/ Since when was a bullet wound to the foot fatal? And if he was mad at me for shooting him when he didnt die... he'd pull his gun out, and i could shoot the gun with the sniper rifle and he'd die.. Im fairly sure getting shot in the gun isnt fatal, however i havent actually done any research on the subjet :dozey: I was just curious if thatll still happen in half life two... that would be really really dissapointing.

Off topic: I just found my quake 2 cd and installed it >< Lmao. This game make me seriously appreciate how fantastic hl1 was at that time.

All games do it really. Shoot someone in the foot enough and they'll die. It just wouldnt be fun if they didnt die. IMO anyways

Thats strange, because when I would shoot him in the gun, he would shoot back, instead of his gun falling out his hand

The best attack against Barney would be a crowbar swing to the face

Yea.. but one shot? :-/
If the gun is powerful enough, it'll do it in any game. The sniper rifle in far cry is the same. Sometimes they get lucky and it takes 2 shots in the foot/arm to kill em. AFAIK HL used hitboxes that defined how much damage was done according to which boxes were hit. Like head did 2x damage, arms and legs did 1/2 damage, and torso did normal damage. Something like that. Then the NPC's only have a certain amount of health. I think its like 30 HP for Barney.

As far as I know, there will be location based damage in HL2, though not to the extent that you would see in a game like Soldier of Fortune. So, theoretically, a shot to the foot should not be fatal in HL2. As for the gun being considered part of the character model in terms of damage, I have no idea. You might want to email Valve and ask! :)

Hm.. interesting. Then shouldnt there be a no damage box for his gun...?

I'm pretty sure it hurts to have anything shot out of your hand.

It doesnt get shot out of his hand though :-/ He dies...

Well, whatever. I haven't played the game in a few years.

Seriously, the game is several years old. You can probably expect the same in HL2. Why are you shooting his gun/foot anyway?

I get really really bored... however it does make the game last really long if you mess around a lot. Gotta get the most out of your money after all. And didnt everyone spend hours shooting at barney? I mean.. what else was there to do? Actually playing the game is way less fun. I have a feeling it'll take me about a month or so to finish hl2 playing several hours a day...

Just enjoy the game dude and stop worrying about such small details. Does it really detract that much from your experience?

Not every poly.. but come on.. his gun >< Maybe im the only one this really bothered :-/ Other than stuff like ive always thought this is one of the most advanced games. (Especially since the only games i've bought in a very long time are hl, op4, and this really neat pong game...)

It really does :-/ I never play mp or mods (Cept for op4) so i just keep playing through the half life game... and i generally just go to a random saved spot and mess around. One has barney and shooting him is fun.

lmao >< Or trying to place laser mines on him... i love that. Most of the time it doesnt let you place them on living things.. but when it works its fun. Ill places like 10 of em on him then walk to the other side of the room and shoot him so he runs after me and has to move ^_^ So much for ai

Oh yea, and in op4... there were these wood palletes on the ground in some places.. and sometimes when i walked over em.. theyd kill me... That wasnt really as annoying as it was confusing as hell.

It is a bit odd that shots in the gun are fatal... try shooting Barney's helmet, it's easiest to hit if you're behind him. The shot just glances off, and he doesn't die. Strange they can't do the same thing with the gun.

I suppose it's because his guns a submodel, and adding a richochet box would've been too much hassle.

HL's got an excuse: it's practically prehistoric. Even then of course you'd have insectoid critters who worship rocks mentioning some of its flaws.

Like to see a game where, Deus Ex style, an NPC's individual body parts have seperate health levels: so if an arm hit zero health, it'd be limp and unusable (a bit like Havok 2's purported joint-breaking feature), but could also detract slightly from your overall health level. I don't know... suppose it'd be too complex.

too bad HL2 isn't using per pixel (or is it per poly?) hit detection like Doom 3, but at the same time, that can make it somehwat harder to hit people, because your bullets can literally fly between people's legs and between their arms and torso, etc.

Wow.. i've never noticed that helmet thing before.. thats so kewl.. ::stands over him shooting him until i run out of ammo:: Aw, the sniper rifle still goes through the helmet. Man that weapon is awesome...

I agree with what your saying, Ikerous. Being shot in the foot (although painful) shouldn't be instantly fatal. Even bleeding to death would take longer.

Deus Ex had an interesting way of handling body damage. The various parts of the body had hit points separate from all the other parts. Being shot in the arms or legs would retard their function but wasn't fatal. Only damage dealt to the head and torso were fatal. It'll be interesting to see how Valve does things...

I've heard a lot of people on here refer to Deus Ex for a lot of different reasons. I've never played (Or really heard about it before for that matteR). Is it a pretty good game? Hm.. maybe i should dow... er.. buy it and see what its like.

Its common for people who get shot in the foot, to instantly start vomitting, its happened many a time in the real world. Although i doubt they'd incorporate this into a computer game...if they did, id shoot him in the face for throwing up all over my beautiful orange suite!

The original was an excellent game. It had a very good, multi-pathed storyline and had some very unique gameplay elements. Too bad it's sequel wasn't nearly as revolutionary (it actually regressed in some areas, IMO).

Getting your legs and arms blown off in the game and having to inch your way to the nearest medbot was always an interesting experience. :p
