Packages announed sounds great.. But what about backups?

Ok I am thrilled to hear HL2 is finally getting somewhere.. I already cancled my pre-order with gameplay.com and will get it from STEAM and later on get it BOXED to frame when I got more money.

Now what confuses me I just pre-loaded HL2... so say next week it is released for pre-load 100%, not to play but fully for pre-load and I get my CS SOURCE to play...

What do I do if I want to format clean for CS source? and get a good PC.

How do we backup our pre-load and CS source?
How can we back it all up saving endless nights of downloading again?


Anyone know or thought of this before?

Nice question, i was thisnking the same. I can't be bothered to DL it all again.

buy a dvd burner. burn the cache files.

if that's not good, you can use a program to split the files over multiple cds. easy.

You make a PARTITION copy all the games there. Once you format your stuff will always be there. You simply make a NEW shortcut to steam and voila its all there.

Easy peasy.

Just go into your Steam folder, and back up the Steamapps folder. Although, I suspect there is a backup wizard coming soon.

Also, redownloading on Steam won't be too painful at all. This is because you can do that at top speed (people don't tend to reformat at the same time) and all Steam games can start once they have the absolute minimum downloaded, so you don't need the whole game to get going, you can download as you play.

If you still dont understand, what i meant is before u download all these preloads make sure your steam is created on a different partition on your HD. So if you ever have to format your stuff will always be there and wont need to REdownload.

i have emailed Gabe about whether the Steam packages available through mail for ur exact reasons.
now i know pple are gonna come into this thread saying "u will be re-downloading these purchased products in situations such as a format" but the truth is, its annoying and since the only way to get the contents of the Gold package is through Steam, i hope Valve are ready for requests on mailing that and other packages.

I will be backing up my steam directory to a cheap external 40 gig HDD.
This drive will be place in a fire box with all my other valuables. :E


also you may want to see if a friend has a old Hdd (maybe 10gig )
just slap that puppy in and back up to the 10gig drive.
then just keep the drive somewhere when not in use.

Just another quick question.. doing this wont affect how the game runs not having it installed nicely and tidy but just copying it over?
