Ok here’s the deal. About 3 weeks ago the was an advertisement in the paper for a Radeon 9800 for $400 Aus, about $190US (up to 50% off clearance sale) I thought wow I’ll but it!. Anyway a few days later I noticed in the display properties it said 9800SE. I was like SE!? what the f**k!?. I went to the shop to return it and the guy kicked up a big fuss. Now I have to wait to Monday to see If I get my money back. My Question is Could some one tell my the exact clock-speeds of a 9800 and 9800SE? ( I cant find them). Also do you think I have a case with this situation, I mean like it was advertised as 9800 and I got the SE, do most shops advertise 9800SE as just a 9800?......Please I know I sound like a noob (I’m not) but I’m afraid I’ve made an complete ass out of myself.

Here is something I found after searching:

"We managed to find out some details concerning the mysterious RADEON 9800 SE graphics cards firstly mentioned in CATALYST 3.5 release notes. Apparently, there will be two versions of the RADEON 9800 SE, one of them will be pretty low-cost and will more resemble RADEON 9600, another will be more advanced and will probably become a successor of the legendary RADEON 9500 128MB that was easily transformed into more expensive RADEON 9700.

The first version of the RADEON 9800 SE will be made on simplified 6-layer PCB and feature 128-bit memory bus for 128MB of DDR SDRAM. The RADEON 9800 SE graphics chip will have only four active rendering pipelines. ATI Technologies again simply disables half of the VPU’s pixel pipelines and probably end-users should have a chance to re-enable them using tweaks in drivers or simply by re-soldering some resistors on the chip.

The second version of the RADEON 9800 SE graphics card will be made on 8-layer PCB and will boast with 256-bit bus for 128MB of DDR SDRAM memory. The chip will also feature only four pipelines, however, this is not an obstacle for brave overclockers and modders, is it? After certain tweaks some lucky users will probably get a fully-functional RADEON 9800 from a lower-cost RADEON 9800 SE solution.

Core and memory clocks of the RADEON 9800 SE graphics cards are to be determined, but in general I expect speeds of the RADEON 9800 SE with 128-bit memory bus to be lower compared to its brother with 256-bit bus."

Hope that helps. For more info go here

no it's 128mb (It's worse....I think)

Edit: thanks but I've already been there (It really didnt confirm any thing)

no, the SE is a budget 9800 with half the pixel pipelines

and if was an SE, they should have advertised it as such, they are very different products, unlike the 9800 Pro and 9800 Non Pro, where the difference is only clock speeds, there are architectural changes in the SE that lower it's performance

Thanks Doobz thats what I wanted to hear  !!! phew I havent made an ass out of myself after all.

Oh, sorry I couldn't help you out any more mate. I hate that tricky marketing BS that companies try to pull. SE most often stands for special edition, the 9800 is ATI's best card. They make it sound like a special edition version of the 9800.

Oh well thanks for your help any way qckbeam. This SE shit is so confusing.

no, u haven't made an ass outta urself.. from what u described, the retailer is supposed to mark what version of the card it is..

and clearly after that description of the pipeline/pixel stuff, i would fight for a refund and hell, even report the retailer to the local municiple consumer hotline...

the retailer tried to scam u it seems.. even if the retailer did not try to, retailer is still at fault for false advertising..

don't let this retailer off the hook dude, do something about it.. $190 bucks is not chump-change.. at least not to me :bounce:

Oh trust me I will! :flame:. I find out tomorrow. If they dont give me my refund I'm gonna report them to consumer affairs.

anywhere you can get a real 9800 in australia online? I cant find them anywhere :(

9800 pro clock speed is 380/340 but if you need me to be exact it's 378.0 core/337.5 memory

Dont take any shit from them. Thats the only way you will get your money back.

The 9800 SE is castrated, plain and simple. Probably around 9600 pro in performance, maybe a little better. But, assholes run stores and advertise them in misleading ways. Give the a-hole a piece of your mind, and try and get a refund...

for example a guy who sells pcs near where i live sells 2600xp calling them 2.6gig pc's which is a lie as the 2600xp runs at 2.026 gig... but il let it slide as i cant fight everyones battles for them...
