Wow... its called when parents by a game look at the big fat M on the package and you can take a guess that this is a "grown-ups" only game not for your 8 year old

as for teens hl2 isn't going to warp their minds but will create even more obnoxious idiotic CS:S players... look at my l33t score!111... god i hate those kind from the bottom of my heart

The list is right, except for the Madden and Sim City games and the like, but it is way out of order. LSL at number 8? Haha.

Funny thing is, I have half of those "Parents Beware" games, but my parents bought most of them for me. I'm 14, but my parents don't care what I play as long as I don't began doing what I see in the games. So far, I'm fine, but hey! I still have a whole lifetime to go o a shooting spree dressed in a marine costume!
I have GTA:
San Andreas
Doom 3
Half-Life 2
Resident Evil: Outbreak
Psi Ops

Oh, half way down the list it switches to a 'recommended for kids' list. I didn't see that at first.

I'm reading some of the article on MediaFamily.org, and I have to say, it's a complete POS. The link is really, really slow though, it took literally minutes for it to load for me.

I guess I'm the only one who thought that more violence would actually have been nice. I thought the game was pretty tame for a Mature rating.

They missed out on vampires bloodlines, huge sexual references and langauge that came out of an eddie murphy comedy show.

I played Doom when I was 7, and I played it hardcore. Duke-Nukem 3D, Quake series, HL, etc followed after that. I'm 18 now and did I go out and kill/maim someone? No. All these "omfg violantt vedeo gaems coz vaolant kidz" things are complete horse-piss. If a kid goes out and kills people because he saw it in a video-game has to be either mentally retarded or he wasn't raised right. But the thing that I hate the most is when some kid actually does go out and kill someone, his parents sue the game companies, YOU LET HIM PLAY THE GOD DAMNED GAME, YOU MORONS!

Edit: What the hell is with all these links being put into my post?

Oh, violence is good. But as far as this list and it's purpose (for parents), it's not saying "IF YOU BUY THESE YOU ARE BAD"- it tries to help out as a guide, but it got the rankings in horrible order. LSL, then GTA should at least be first.

Bah, in 20 years, all this crazy nonsense over video games will be over as gamers take over the world.

No one under the age of 18 should be allowed to play CS, not because violence might corrupt and warp their minds, but because CS kiddies annoy the **** out of me.

WTF? The hypocritical and ignorant stupidity of these organisations never ceases to amaze me. Leisure suit larry below HL2 and Doom 3???? What??? (sorry about the over-use of question marks but I felt it was justified)

Ok, I can see the argument against some of the games. Leisure Suit Larry is peverted and derogatory towards women in so many ways. I'm not a big fan of GTA personally because it does glamorise a ****ing horrible lifestyle that can be directly related to real life and so many impressionably little boy racer scally wannabe types love it. And Rumble Roses is basically a game for pervs.

But what, apart from the violence, is immoral about HL2? It requires intelligent solutions to physics related problems, has an engrossing storyline, and all the violence is necessary and related to the story, it is not needless or unprovoked. Same with Doom 3. I can't really see anything immoral with Doom 3 at all....it is violent, sure and pretty scary, but with good reason. I mean, hell has just opened up and all.

Here's the hypocrisy: Prince of Persia in the recommended list...??? Wtf? If violence in any form = bad for these people, then surely prince of persia is a pretty bad game to recommend? Or is chopping up people with swords a perfectly acceptable family activity?

Also, Myst IV has pretty disturbing content apparently...isn't its story based around the 2 brothers who in the first game are imprisoned by their father for enslaving the worlds and using them for their twisted pleasures? One of them is a drug addict, and the other "experiments" on animals.....oh yeah, what a brilliant storyline for children!

Sorry, this ignorance and hypocrisy really pisses me off. At least if they were consistent and knowledgeable, then I could maybe give them some respect. But they have no ****ing idea what they are talking about, and they contradict themselves.

leusite larry and rumble roses are just games not so big deal, but still that games should not be trully recomended cuz hav nuditty

just that HL2 hav phisycs puzzles and stuff dont mean that will be that a teacher

I think they mean Prince of persia 1 cuz I saw it and the prince fights against sands monster or something like that,is the second one that is very bloody (correct me if I am wrong)

and why you are so angry?,sure many people underage will play the games even if they are forbiden for them

but still thats opinion are stupids, cua are just GAMES!!1

how is Half-Life 2 four places above the Guy Game?! The Guy Game has pr0n in it ffs, even if it's just nude women dancing around. HL2 is violent, but it's also thought provoking (to me at least) and it's obviously on a whole different cinematic and mental level.

The media always focuses in on people who go nuts and played games. But what about all the other people who played voilent games? Like the doctors, lawyers and cops who played the origonal Doom?

The media just needs a scape goat.

Yes underage people will still play the games, but here it is important to argue if it is MORAL for them to or not. This is an issue of morals and of justification, not of speculation about the
practicalities of such justifications.

And "cuv hav nuditty" is not the main reason at all for criticising Leisure Suit Larry and Rumble Roses. It is the perverted, objectifying, and sexist nature of those games that can be questioned.

I'm not saying HL2 is a teacher....I was not implying that at all. I was merely trying to find anything essentially immoral in HL2. If you hold the violence=bad hypothesis then yes, it is immoral. But so is Prince of Persia (and yes PoP 1 involves plenty of sword chopping and falling bloodily on spikes etc).

I personally would not want a child playing HL2 or Doom 3, but because there are many horrific images in both games and the child would probably be very scared and have nightmares. I personally think there is nothing immoral with both games at all.

And games are not "just games". They are just as important as films, tv and books as a medium of artistic and informational expression and representation. You can see a game such as HL2 as an interactive movie almost...or an interactive novel. That's what makes them so brilliant. It's not "heh I can shoot things I'm so ****ing cool, look dead things! Blam!". Or at least it shouldn't be.

I recorded something last night that was on this issue, and showed the same list of games, but unfortunately it didn't record right, so I didnt' bother with it.

Am I the only kid that Pikmin weirded out? You get a little army of mindless cute things, and send them off to their deaths. They kill and carry off the bodies of their fallen enemies and carry them back to the hive to spawn more of your evil army! Some catch on fire, and run around screaming before being burnt to a crisp. How delightfully morbid!

They put Doom 3 over GTA?!

Ok that seems pretty stupid to me. GTA is going to have far more of a negative impact on a gullible kid than Doom 3 would ever have.

What parent would buy there kid Doom 3 of GTA for there 12 year old with out this?
This is also stupid they rate the ESRB a -B, Many have said including the US Goverment said that The ESRB is one of if not the best rating system in the world. The games that parents need to watch out for are games like Prince of Persia: Warrior Within which has violence as bad as Ninjia Gadien (i dont know how it is spelled) (Also NG was censord for the Europe release for its violence (you cant chop off the enemy's head in the English verison.) while PoP was just a T rated game. i can see a parent picking this up for there kid even after seeing the M rating.
This is not to say the any game should be censord out but i am very thank full for the ESRB.

oh NOES!!
parents gonna start a petition against HL2 now?
just like a few of them started one against Doom3 right? ... :)

why in the world do you guys think something sexually related should be more offensive than something violent?!

Not that you're even close to alone in this...I don't understand it from anyone.
Whatever!

I find it stupid how some concepts in movies are totally fine and accepted as PG-13. Yet as soon as it goes to a game it becomes M rated. I just don't get it.

actually video games have had a negative effect on me thats turning me insanely violent. if I see a combine lookin dude on the street... I'm gonna do three things.

I'm going to turn towards him, press ctrl, then click.

"A game with everything but morals," is the equivalent of a four star restaurant review praising the eatery's ambience and service but then adding as an afterthought the fact that the food is laced with salmonella.

Is that the worst metaphor I've ever heard?
"A game that has a good review but may cause wayward behaviour in a small number of people is the same as a restaraunt with a good review but will cause everyone to die."

Nice...

All these problems with game censorship will mostly go away in the next 20 years or so. They are simply teething problems brought about by the children knowing better than the parents. When all the gamers become parents and actually understand what is going on, problem solved!
