Well, I hope I'm not the only one who has parents who think video games are worse than guns. (maybe I am the only one)
I relized how much my games were in danger just a couple weeks ago. My dad had found me playing CoD or Unreal 2004 on his computer and he became infuriated. I mean a mad motherf***er. I guess I didn't cut the lawn on time or something of that nature. (my parents are very anal, there like 60...gross huh?) And he demanded that I hand him all my video games so he could lock them up in his safe deposit box. I got mad at him, no way was anyone taking away my games, not in my lifetime. So I said OK and I went into my room and gathered up all the demo CD's I could (around 8) and then I felt as though I didn't have enough and I scrounged up some crappy blank CD's and I wrote on a couple of them. I labeled the CD's under such names as "Half Life 2" "Halo 2" "Unreal Tournamnent 4056" and "Children that eat sibling flesh." I also tossed in GTA3 just because. After I gathered all my fake games I handed them to my father with the saddest face that I could muster and he angrily snatched them away from me, never to be seen again lol. But I had another quick problem to solve, I had always lined up all my games on my shelf above my bed and they were exposed! So I took all of them and put them into a nearby navy chest (trunk) and locked it up. I feel pretty bad for myself because I think I'm the only kid in America that has to lock his games up to keep them safe from his parents. Any thoughts? Other stories?

No, I don't have these problems since. my mom plays some games too.

Nice work man stay strong. The overlords have been threatening something similar for quite awhile,Nice Idea with the blank CD's might use it if the worst comes to the worst.

My parents don't like games at all really. Not because they are violent or anything like that, but because they think I'm wasting my life with them. I did have a friend once whose mom would take his games to her work and lock them up there for no particular reason, and my aunt is always telling me how games are addictive and cause violence in teens. She's always giving my mom pointers "Teresa, you really should take those video games away from him. He's already a loner, and these games are just adding fuel to the fire!". Everyone else thinks they are relics from childhood I won't let go of.

Just stop playing games for a week, become a crack addict, buy a gun and shoot some people and wear clothes that would scare them.

As we speak my mother is playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in the other room.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

I am 18... and i need to write more stuff because of the 10 character limit

Wouldn't it be a 10 character minimum? Limit would mean that you could type no more than ten characters...

Computer games Develop the mind :). Supposivly. My dad is a epic pinball and pacman addict. Until we took away the old old old computer. Those that hate computer games dont understand them, however ignorance is bliss so let them be :p

my mum would never do that. My freind is on the PC 24/7 and his mum gets annoyed, but she never actually doesn anyhting. i gueuss u all have strict parets, unlucky!

You're 18 and they won't let you play computer games? Correct me if I'm wrong but you're pretty much an adult.

My mum doesn't mind my games, but she doesn't want to play them herself.

Once when I asked her to help me test the settings for a HL LAN game I was asking her (from my computer) about how stuff looked and sounded (on her computer) and she decided to mess around and gib me with the crowbar when I wasn't expecting it...

She'd never seen a video game death before, and her only response was: 'Ergh, that's horrible!'

My parents never let me play games with too much blood and gore in it. However since I got my own computer its been impossible for them to keep track of what I play, and when they do see me playing a violent game like GTA3 for example. I just say its off a PC Gamer demo CD and their satisfied. Or I just make sure that while they are watching I don't do anything violent.

Otherwise my parents are fascinated by games, they don't play them themselves but they are both engineers and are always interested by how advanced the graphics are and how the designers utilize interesting hardware features.

Seriously bro grow the hell up. If video games are causing you do lie and be disrespectful to your parents, its obvious you arent mature enough to play them anyways.

To me its all about context.

I only play or would let my kids play games with chracters of integrity or honor. If the subject demstrates a worth while story. Its why I dotn or would let my kids play GTA3 or that Postal 2 crap.

I guess I'm pretty damn lucky compared to many of you folks then, as my parents have always been entirely happy with me playing games, and always interested when I show them a new one. When I played the new E3 vid of HL2 for my mom, she was floored (same for U3), and my dad has tried playing them at one point or another, and just yesterday forwarded me a notification about a local LAN tourney. Not only do they support me playing games, they support me in my desire to eventually make them! :)

LOL my dad gets all giddy when he whatches me play Battlefield 1942

My parents get confused when they watch me play games. They say it makes them dizzy... but they don't complain. My mum comments on how gory some are, but other than that they aren't bothered. I'm glad they're not, because they don't understand at all, and it's just annoying having to explain things to them.

I got my first PC 6 years ago, and I was still using it last April, and the only thing upgraded was the graphics card (to a gForce 2). Because I wasn't able to get a job (too young, I was only 12/13) I couldn't save up for a PC myself, so I was begging my parents to buy me one for Christmas. They just could not understand why I needed a new one. The Pentium 2 struggled when playing HL, and crashed all the damn time, but because it didn't explode or anything my parents insisted that it was fine  They must have got sick of my complaining because they bought me one for my 14th bday... :bounce: They don't understand why I want to upgrade from my gForce FX 5200 tho...

Since I paid for those games with my own money (maybe $500, around there) you wouldn't want to see them go bye bye. I never said I was disrespectful to them, I only wish to continue my gaming hobby. If that includes a little white lie here and there, I consider it OK. I also never said that Video games caused me to lie/be disrespectful to my parents, for the most part I do respect them, It's just that we don't see eye to eye on certain matters such as video games. (My father saw me watching the HL2 E3 demo and he yelled at me to stop playing video games. I replied "I'm not touching the keyboard or mouse" I think he got confused at that statement because he just walked out of the room.)
Everyone is brought up differently and you have earned the respect of your parents. That's great but my parents don't treat me the same because of certain issues pertaining to the past (doesn't include me, it includes my brother) so you could sort of say that my brothers mishaps have fallen onto my shoulders. That is why there is tension between my parents and I. I'm sorry If I came off as Immature in my initial post. Now that things have been clarified, I forgive you

Neutrino 18?

Why don't you just move out.

In responce to your question, Money. Something which I do not have. It costs alot to live on your own. (I lied, I'm actually 17 movin on 18 in a month) But If I did have the decision to move out I would still be starting my Senior year in High School. A part time job wouldn't cover the costs of an apartment, food, heating, electricity, water, etc..... A good paying job only comes after college. (For the most part)

My parents dont care what games i play but they still try to limit the time i spend on my computer. very annoying since the whole reason a bought a computer was that i could use it whenever i wanted.

Heheh, my mum is somewhat indifferent to them. She is impresed with them. She often says its incredible that they are now capable of making very convincing 3d worlds.

But she doesnt know anything about the techincal side of games. Or computers. Or even MS word lol.

She is also against me playing them when my exams are so close.
Which is understandable I suppose.... :rolling:

heh...my parents didn't like me playing violent video games until I wrote a 20 page research paper on the subject for College Argumentation, which prooved that violent games actually yeilds less violent people, and increases visual acuity.

since then, no problems. :D

heh, epic pinball. you can still download that :)

it must really suck for those whose parents don't let them play video games. my parents (well my dad... i don't know if my mom knew...) let me play wolfenstein and doom in elementary school (and wolfenstein was actually on the computers at my middle school....), and my cousin always lets me look at his games, and my aunt is apparently convinced that all i do in my free time is play some game that she calls "superdoom"... lol. my dad still plays sometimes if me or my sister are playing, and my aunt likes to play old games like commander keen/jill of the jungle. a few of my cousins played commander keen on my computer when they were here last thanksgiving.... fun times, hehe.
i guess my parents don't really care how much time i spend on the computer since i keep up the grades at school.

Yeah, my mum playes Computer Games too, but my dad doesn't really like them. She also has another computer in another room with a radeon 9800XT and a 21' monitor... grrr... :p

Just lock up all your dad's DVDs or something and say that you're afraid that the violence on them is warping his mind.

Seriously bro grow the hell up. If video games are causing you do lie and be disrespectful to your parents, its obvious you arent mature enough to play them anyways.
I dont see how his post is immature. Parents arn't always right you know, his dad sounds quite petty to me. He has every right to lie. And why shouldnt you show violence and gore to children. Makes no difference, the only thing I think is worth censoring is foul language and sex up to about the age of 12, after that they learn all these words in high school and start to look up pr0n.

My parents don't mind me playing violent games that much, my mother used to be a little upset about it before, but after years of me playing violent games and still being a relatively calm person she doesn't mind at all nowadays.

I think parents that are upset about kids playing violent videogames should be glad their kids aren't crack-addicts, alcoholics, being in fights with people all the time, being out on the streets/ on rave parties until the wee hours etc.. You get my point.

Csmighty1, it sounds like you have absolutely no reason to lie in the first place. You bought those games with your own money; that was yours to do with as you please. So you forgot to mow the lawn or something; just remember to do them in the future and there probably won't be a backlash against your hobby.
It doesn't sound to me like you're being disrespectful at all. Quite the opposite, actually. Thing about respect, it sounds to me like you're not getting any. Respect is a two-way street, even with parents/children. And you're damn near a legal adult! Sit your parents down and explain that it's unfair that they're taking things that you purchased, that aren't harming them or negatively affecting you, and you want them back. If they have any hobbies, you should ask them, "How would you like it if I went in and took all of your <whatever> that you bought and locked it up? How would YOU feel?" If they're upset that you missed mowing the lawn, just make a promise that you'll cut it on time in the future. You'd better make sure you keep it though, otherwise you can probably expect another lash against your video games.

It always boggles my mind when parents get all hissy about things like these. Very strange to me. I guess that's 'cause I'm blessed with a mother who enjoys video games. Mostly fighting games; Tekken specifically. It's the most hilarious site when my friends used to come over and play Tekken on the old Playstation, and she'd trash talk and tell them, "I'm gonna kick your ass." Then she'd unleash ten-hit combos.
She also knows a little about HL...not too much, but she knows the G-Man. She just watched the E3 vids with me this week; thought they were pretty cool.
My dad likes games too, but more of the pinball/puzzle-game type. Old arcade games, and such.

My parents don't mind me playing games...I get pretty good grades...
They just wish I read more books.:p

Wow. I really think I should've appreciated my own situation a lot more in the past after reading that!

Although now I can smugly point out that I own thousands of pounds of games and a £2000 gaming rig (despite now being broke, but meh, gaming > financial security), once upon a time I found myself in a similar situation.

My dad has now come to terms with the fact that I'm a (semi) functional member of society, and has never again adopted the stance that games turn kids into slavering killing machines. (The actual culprit is reality TV, soap operas and stupidity). But at the time he seemed quite convinced that some games were psyche-warping abnormalities, although the huge irony is that he bought me Doom for Christmas.

My advice? Adopt my stance- become very, very angry at scapegoatism, and loudly proclaim at every given opportunity that anyone, for example, who blames games for real-world violence as opposed to lax gun laws, poor parenting, and selfish idiots, really needs to re-evaluate their opinions. Hell, are parents so convinced of their own incompetence that they actually know they've raised some sort of stunted moron who'll become the Teeninator after watching Mario abuse oversized chelonians?

Oh, and just because you're 18, don't suddenly think you're being childish in your actions. I didn't move out of my parents house until pathetically late in life, and even though I'd saved for appliances with my own money I often found myself at their mercy, although divorce aside I reckon I had a fairly good childhood...

I sort of agree. Pointless violence in a game I can enjoy for a while, but soon I just think, 'Why am I playing this crap?'.

I liked HL because it's the only game I have played where I have actually questioned what I had done. At the end, I was expecting a congratulations for surviving, but when I got one from the gman he was congratulating what I had done, basically wiping out an entire race. It was an ending where I really thought hard about whether or not to accept his job offer.

Yeah, I actually refused the gman first time :O

Then I saw what happened if you did ;(

LOL, I don't know your circumstances but I think that a parent not letting you play computer games is just plain funny. Sorry if I sound like a ****, I do still feel for you... :dozey:

Yea my parents are lamers about playing video games too. Mainly because i spend most of my time doing it. I figure, its my only hobby, I have good grades and a job, So why not spend the majority of my free time on the computer?

Sad part is, if my hobby was sports or anything to that nature, they would be happy as anything that I spend so much time doing what I enjoyed.

As far as the violent part goes, my dad doesn't care, he watches action packed movies and playes video games, the newest being Call of Duty (very rarely). Though, every once in a while, he says that I spend WAY to much time on the computer. Seeing my dad spends all of his free time watching TV or playing a video game, I dont see why he even bothers BS'ing me about it.

My mom on the other hand gets angry when she watches something violent on the computer (my mom considers the fighting in City of Heroes violent) she yells at me and tells me that my games are too violent. Bleh. Anyway my mom ,also, every once in a while, flips out and screams at me because i spend ALL of my time on the computer.

I think they are just angry because they are thinking I am wasting my life away or something, Geez Im only 18 and am going to college in the fall, I wish they would just STFU already and leave me enjoy what I like.

tell 'em to **** off or you'll give'm a backhander

j/k :)

once you reach 18 (21 in the states i guess) your legaly an adult, my parents used to give me a hard time up untill then, now they dont. its magic.

if you were in australia or england you'd be pretty damn close.
