Parents + Games = broken games

Seriously bro grow the hell up. If video games are causing you do lie and be disrespectful to your parents, its obvious you arent mature enough to play them anyways.

What? Are you on the "bad side" or something. You ****ing commie, I am coming over to your house right now and taking your computer away.

Well, I hope I'm not the only one who has parents who think video games are worse than guns. (maybe I am the only one)
I relized how much my games were in danger just a couple weeks ago. My dad had found me playing CoD or Unreal 2004 on his computer and he became infuriated. I mean a mad motherf***er. I guess I didn't cut the lawn on time or something of that nature. (my parents are very anal, there like 60...gross huh?) And he demanded that I hand him all my video games so he could lock them up in his safe deposit box. I got mad at him, no way was anyone taking away my games, not in my lifetime. So I said OK and I went into my room and gathered up all the demo CD's I could (around 8) and then I felt as though I didn't have enough and I scrounged up some crappy blank CD's and I wrote on a couple of them. I labeled the CD's under such names as "Half Life 2" "Halo 2" "Unreal Tournamnent 4056" and "Children that eat sibling flesh." I also tossed in GTA3 just because. After I gathered all my fake games I handed them to my father with the saddest face that I could muster and he angrily snatched them away from me, never to be seen again lol. But I had another quick problem to solve, I had always lined up all my games on my shelf above my bed and they were exposed! So I took all of them and put them into a nearby navy chest (trunk) and locked it up. I feel pretty bad for myself because I think I'm the only kid in America that has to lock his games up to keep them safe from his parents. Any thoughts? Other stories?

your 18, in the states your a legal adult. you can buy cigarettes, porn, and weapons (depending on where you buy them). grow some balls, or get your own computer. you should have a decent job by now. Call Of Duty is Rated Teen when your old enough to buy Mature rated games. i seriously hope you are kidding about this post.

Some parents think that games like CoD, UT2004, HL or any other gun fps drives you to get a gun and kill people. But heres the real truth.
If you take away those games we will go get a gun and kill people. If we have those games, we will go on them and kill computerized objects that either the computer or other humans across the globe control ^_^

So tell them..
Its either, i go out and kill people with a M4A1 or go on Counter-Strike and kill computerized people controled by other humans\bots.

My parents used to get mad at me for being on the computer alot, and NOT doing my chores, and having very bad grades.. But now that I have my act together, and I am passing (mainly C's) they don't terrorize me as much as they used to.. Occasionly when I get in trouble at school my fauther threatens me with "If bla bla bla happens again, then I will unplug your ass from the internet for a week!" , but nothing really related to games.

When I was younger, 12 to be exact, my parents sat me down and had a long talk with me, they said things like "We are going to limit your time on the computer to bla bla hours a week" .. Of course that never happened, guess they were just trying to scare me. I do like to consider myself a serious gamer, because that is what I enjoy my parents have no right to take away what I enjoy from me unless i'm not doing what needs to be done.

Every once in awhile I try to mention something like this :
Would you rather me be a jock, and my life revolve around sports, and have to retire when i'm in my late 30's because my knee just blew out?

Or would you rather me be a programmer, and sit behind a desk all day making/playing games where I can't get hurt, and i'm not hurting anyone.

If this sounds a little self-centered or anything, sorry.. just kinda got caught up in the post. But it really gets to me when parents do stuff like that.

I do believe games are wrong because you simply could be doing 100 more different things that could, help you earn money, have a better life, ect...

I also believe gaming is an addiction worse then heroine.

My parents are wierd on the subject...
They let me play games because
1: I AM pretty crazy when im out with friends.
2: They would rather have me addicted to a computer then other drugs like POT... Which they just found out last weekend that I smoke.
3: They don't want me to die because I already have one DUI and I've crashed my truck through a fence and mailbox doing alot of damage and im not even 18 yet...

I found that life is better then games, but I just play them to pass the time, I kno by the time I move out I might quit gaming altogetther (Not before hl2 :) )

In general Gaming really doesnt help you out in your love life either...
It wasn't until I turned 17 that I had really discovered what love was all about... Im kinda of a shy person in nature so I mad at my self for not doing something ealier... GOD I love women... thats all that drives me now... Hahaha Im going to a frat party tonight in Down Town SAN Diego california at a nice hotel! Now I just have to sneak out of my house sucessfully...

look, just do a little research on the subject, here's a couple links from my research last year that will help give you a good argument for violent games.

http://www.theesa.com/IDSAfinal.pdf (The Entertainment Software Association, LOTS of good info, basically did all the research for you to prove video games yeild more mild mannered people, specifically violent ones)

http://www.idsa.com/keyfacts.html (Independent Digital Software Association, some facts about gamers)

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/05/0528_030528_videogames.html (Violent Videogames boost visual acuity).

then show them you are responcible, and how some companies do make games for shock factor (Manhunt, Postal 2, etc) and that you find those kinds of games disgusting. (Most gamers actually do, BTW. the whole gameplay factor).

Then go onto how some games can be a learning tool, DOD, Medal of Honor, etc can teach a bit of history, simuler to Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, etc.

then move on to how Movies are MUCH more realistic in their depictions of violence/gore factor. Most violent games that are gory have a more cartoon look to them (UT2k4 anyone) whereas games like farcry, etc, aside from a pool of blood and a small wound, nothing. no flying limbs, etc.

most of all, show them you are not a violent person. If you are, well, your parents have a point IMHO.

Yea my parents used to limit me to 2 hours of the computer per night!!! How freakin stupid.

And yea, I try the "I could be doing drugs blah blah blah" but that just makes my mom yell more lol.

And I did pay for this computer I am on, so I bascially own it but my dads like "well its in our house so its not yours blah blah"

And I cant move out, I dont have that great of a job and I need money for College, but believe me once I get out Ill be Happy.

I've found that many parents have problems with games, especially violent ones, not because they have tried games and found them to be a horrible satanic influence on children, causing them to shoot their families and eat babies; (sorry for the run-on there, it got kinda unruly.) but that they read or hear in the media that games are blamed for such tragedies of this magnitue (ok, maybe not the babies) and jump on the bandwagon, followed by a games-ban.

My parents jumped on about a year ago.

I found that since most people are reasonably reasonable, if you merely speak to your parents about what it is that is bothering them about games, you can gennerally dissuade them, or at a minimum qualm some of their fears concerning how horrible games are.

Now, chances are they're going to bring up the violence topic. And in many ways i'd have to agree with them. Desensitization is really a big issue, and not just an adult-invented one either. (I wrote an article about it for my school's newspaper even) I can vouch for those who say that desensitization is real, mainly from my own experiences... I watch a lot of zombie movies. At first I would be uncomfortable as someone machetes into a person's arm, then has to fight to get it to cut all the way through, then caudarizes (sp?) the wound with a torch (Day of the Dead) but after a couple movies, I found it easier to stomache. You might just have to give that one to them.

But by showing that you have yet to commit an act of villainry, (so long as that is the case) and none of your friends have either (see last note) it may be possible to prove that it is just a way to escape from reality, blow off some steam, and generally enjoy one's self.

Good luck.

Wow. I feel like I just wrote a book.
Oh, and that's my first post.

Man I am glad my parents aren't like that or I would throw out my Menendez Trump Card.

Some people just need to learn that life's too short to be an uptight anal bandit and learn to find enjoyment from other sources than making everyone else's life a living hell.

csmighty1, I'm not in the same situation as you but I can definitely sympathize with you. My dad is always bitching about how I spend "all my time" playing games, despite the fact that 1) I only get 2-3 hours per day on the computer (on which I've spent $500 upgrading) and 2) I haven't played a computer game in a week. And he's a blatant hypocrite; while he yells at me for wasting hours of my life on games, he watches sports every f***ing hour of the day :flame: He then has the nerve to threaten to throw a brick/bowling ball/dense object through the computer that's essentially half mine, which he uses a LOT to watch live horse races which play simultaneously on TV :)laugh:). Sometimes he threatens to cut off the internet, which again interferes with his horse races. So really, his threats are completely empty.

And then, somehow, spending two to three times as much time playing Wind Waker or SSB Melee isn't a waste of time. Neither is watching TV for six hours straight.

And on top of that, he recently bought me SCPT for the computer. Something's not right here, but all I know is that I can't wait to get a part-time job, buy my own computer, and rewire my bedroom with grounded outlets and a phoneline for the DSL modem.

Well, Pitbull, to answer one of your statements, yes I have balls, and their quite grown if I do say so myself. Hold on I'll check for you. Yep, they're there.
Decent job eh? What kind of job is that? Working at good ol McDonalds cooking burgers? Pumping gas? Handing out movie tickets? general Labor? Believe me, I've had some pretty tough jobs. (Try weedwhacking at an equestrian center for 6 1/2 hours strait in 90 degree heat with shitty humidity. Those who live in Massachusetts can testify this) Personally, I don't consider any job I can get as "decent." I.E. Making money. I can make enough money to go out and have a good time every so often but certainly not enough to buy my own computer. I need that money for college bro.
Just because I am 17 doesn't mean that I should only play Mature rated games. CoD is a great WW2 game and The reason why it is teen is because when you install it the blood effects are turned off as default. (go into performance settngs to turn it back on)
Just because in 17 (going on 18 if you prefer) doesn't mean shit if I live with my parents because, well, I'm living under their house, and I generally don't have a say with what rules I want to follow and what rules I don't.
Ah yes, I almost forgot. I do own a gun. (3 shotguns in facts) and I have a firearms ID card. Does owning weapons make me a "bad ass?" No. But I still have to follow house rules and if that means taking away my property, I will lie to keep it safe without raising hell.
Please think before you post. Thank you

He has a point........

I feel ya csmighty1, my situation is quite like stigmata's here...... dangerously close....

and I live life dangerously

HAHA!!! you completely missed the piont of my piont, yup it went right over your head. OMG!!! HAHA now wonder your parents still make the majority of chioces in your life you can't even find the meaning in my post. my post was ment to tell you that you are an adult (at least you legally by age you are you did infact first say your 18 now 17 make up your damn mind) and you should be able to make your own decisions in what you choose to to view as entertainment. your parents are still trying to shelter you from the real world. they wont even let you play a teen game (Call Of Duty), and your almost an adult.

Dude, don't be so freaking hard on the guy... jesus, light up, he's in his parents house. It's not his property, therefore, not his rules.

You're 18 and they won't let you play computer games? Correct me if I'm wrong but you're pretty much an adult.

He's 18? He can't move out?

Seriously Pitbul, your plan of attack here sucks. Mouthing off, or taking on the role of a rebel when your living with your parents is a bad idea. It's a great way to create tension among everyone and possibly get your ass kicked out of the house. You're right, it's stupid that csmighty1 can't play what he want's to play, but the way he went about taking care of that problem is smarter than taking the "You're an adult do whatever the hell you want" route. It's not his house. When you're living with your parents, even as an adult, there are certain rules you can't break or you'll find yourself looking for another place to live. Sometimes appeasement is the best way to go.

My parents never care about what I do with my computer.
And since I always lock the door, they never know what I am doing.
Sometimes they see me browsing the net and will say "Oh you are playing games again."

And sometimes I will show them how cool a game is. I am planning to show them HL2 when it is out.

csmighty1 said:
Since I paid for those games with my own money (maybe $500, around there) you wouldn't want to see them go bye bye. I never said I was disrespectful to them, I only wish to continue my gaming hobby. If that includes a little white lie here and there, I consider it OK. I also never said that Video games caused me to lie/be disrespectful to my parents, for the most part I do respect them, It's just that we don't see eye to eye on certain matters such as video games. (My father saw me watching the HL2 E3 demo and he yelled at me to stop playing video games. I replied "I'm not touching the keyboard or mouse" I think he got confused at that statement because he just walked out of the room.)
Everyone is brought up differently and you have earned the respect of your parents. That's great but my parents don't treat me the same because of certain issues pertaining to the past (doesn't include me, it includes my brother) so you could sort of say that my brothers mishaps have fallen onto my shoulders. That is why there is tension between my parents and I. I'm sorry If I came off as Immature in my initial post. Now that things have been clarified, I forgive you

Neutrino 18?

Why don't you just move out.

In responce to your question, Money. Something which I do not have. It costs alot to live on your own. (I lied, I'm actually 17 movin on 18 in a month) But If I did have the decision to move out I would still be starting my Senior year in High School. A part time job wouldn't cover the costs of an apartment, food, heating, electricity, water, etc..... A good paying job only comes after college. (For the most part)

I am taking it that you live in their house, not to mention they probably pay the electric bill so you can play your computer. Well then you live by there rules. I am not saying that I agree with them, just that if your parents ask you to do something you do it regardless on what you see eye to eye on. A little white lie, lol you intentianly collected every demo you had playing off of the ignorance that they might have had on being able to reconise your games. Then you falsely labled the games with ones that arent even real. I dont know what goes on at your house, But you are responsible for your own actions and these are not the ingrediants of a man.

Cs, you're gonna have to solve this. You cant just play your games secretly like this, you'l be found out eventually. Your just going to have to reason with them with some good arguements, find out why he took away the games and counter it.

I dont think I could survive with a Girlfriend/wife that hates computer games... so I got one that only semi-hates them and couldnt be any less interested in them when I try to show them to her.

Me
"Hey hunny, come here and look at this awesome HL2 demo from E3"

My G/f
"Oh great that stupid, pointless HL game."

Me
"No, No, its the sequal, its alot better than the first one"

My g/f
"Sure it is"
*watches the demo*
*Yawns*
*walks away*

Me

it was never ment to be.

me and my mates play games, girlfriends just say how imature we and the games are. the silent treatment works best. they always come crawling back.

My parents respect me and believe me responsible and mature enough to be my own judge when it comes to violent games. Their mistake :)

Mum just asks that I watch what little bro is playing... but she let him play FarCry so pfft.

Sorry if I'm making it seem like I can't play video games. I can and I still do even if my dadd walks into the room. It's prettty wierd, I play them all the time and when he see's me playing them he doesn't say "didn't I take all your video games?" He just says the same thing "I need to use the computer" or "stop playing those damn video games." I just kind of ignore him. It's not like I can only play video games when he's out of the house. I just illustrated in my first post how against video games my parents are. That's all, It doesn't mean I can't play video games anymore. I still do...religously

:p right. So he doesnt find it strange that suddenly you've got loads of games "again", thats really odd.

you know, my parents were pretty surprised when I showed them how the media flat out lies about how violent games are.

like CNN using the gibalicious mutator for UT2k3....I found that funny. (To make it MORE gory)

then how they show pictures of Earthwork Jim holding his gun out. (For those that DON"T know, he just kills crows, etc while saving the planet)

or ZELDA. (Hey, he usually just fights gelatinous blobs...at least in the adventures of link...)

I ought to type up my research paper to the PC again...I lost it in a format, only have the printed version now.
