Pay to play multiplayer???!!?

I've been reading about people saying that even if you buy the game as Retail, you STILL have to pay monthly or something to play the multiplayer side of HL2... is this true??????? It sucks if it does, why would you pay monthly to play an FPS online?... Someone clear this up for me! :flame:

There's no monthly fee to play multiplayer... just for Steam subscription.

You CAN pay monthly if you want. You basically rent HL2 for $10/month or so, and you can play just as if you had purchased the whole game. The thing about the pay-to-play is that if Valve comes out with new stuff while you're subscribing, you'll get it at no additional charge, while everyone else will have to pay.

But no, you don't buy and then pay again.

Thanks for clearing it up guys.
I will definitely get the retail version, as I cannot afford myself paying monthly with all the stuff my parents already do pay monthly like cable, satellite, aol etc.

Yeah, so let's get it clear that payment is NOT required to use Steam. There is a payment plan optional if you wish to have access to everything on Steam (HL1, HL2, and all the mods/media) for just $10 a month.
