Just bought it today and was noticing the screenshot on the top of page 64. The ant lion on the right has it's leg stuck in the cabinet. I was just wondering what caused this.....fluke maybe. If it was dead then I might see it but it is still alive and it looks the cabinet was just moved with the manipulator. Maybe the ant lion and the cabinet tried to occupy the same space at the same instant.....who knows.

I just hope stuff like that doesn't happen much because I have played games where there was noticeable clipping and it kinda detracted from the game. That's pretty noticeable in that one screenshot.

This is not a flame of source or valve or anything like that, just curious if anyone had noticed it and why you think it may have happened.

Eh, I haven't seen it, but maybe the cabinet door got shut on the antlion's leg? :D

maybe the ant lion was trying to get some cookies in the cabinet, but gordon was all like "NO! MY COOKIES" (in sign language, of course) and slammed the door shut with the manipulator

There are alot of clipping issues in the screenshots and videos we have seen.

I definitely know what you mean, and it's really noticeable, but since so many reviews have already praised HL2 to kingdom come, I doubt it's too big of a deal.

Sheesh. Give'em a break! Wait...play, and then complain!

This is the first time I've noticed it really. It's just that one screenshot it kinda jumps out at you. I have noticed that monsters or rebels "walk through" the dead lying on the ground but I can understand the reason for that.

maybe the antlion got angry and stomped his "leg?" through the cabinet, and after that he thought "now that was pretty stupid of me, im f**cked now, heres this guy with some gun thats going to hurt me, and i look like a jackass with my leg stuck in this cabinet, and i cant get away."

I've never seen a game without some clipping issues. Unless you want games to require a second CPU dedicated to collision detection, it's something you'll have to live with.

Not really a complaint, just an observation. And I will be playing it for sure. ;)

although i liked my cookie theory better, yours is probably more likely, travis. i dunno what all these guys talking about "clipping issues" and stuff are talking about...

I think thats what happened.

Sad... when I saw the screenshot I knew it would appear here. Some folks are too predictable.

Yea, i noticed that pretty quickly. I wasn't really annoyed by it, though. I was just like, "oh, his leg's in the cabinet :rolling: ". Speaking about that review, man it's a great review! :D

Just gave me an idea.....would be cool if it remained stuck while you picked the cabinet up and sent both colliding violently into a nearby wall.

can you pick up small enemies with the manipulator? that would be fun

Agreed, it was an amazing review. It just makes you want the game even more.

It's completely possible to make bounding boxes exactly match the model polygons. The problem is how much CPU time do you want to take checking for intersections.

Clipping will always be a part of the game, and it's not really that big of a deal, quit flaming VALVe, or don't play the game when it's released...

I wondered about this. Without true modeling of bodies and musculature (i.e. if complex characters are still animated frame by frame instead of moving their limbs and other parts all via physics interactions, which would eat tons and tons of processor time), it probably just isn't possible to stop clipping entirely without making it almost impossible for characters to navigate and not get stuck on things in a highly changeable environment. I'll accept some clipping in return for fun.

yer collision detection takes a lot of time for your proc. I mean....HL2 is good as far as i have seen..but for around the next 3-4 years..expect clipping

I challenge you to find one single post in this thread where anyone flames Valve.

:sniper: :afro:

Woah, I guess PC Gamer made a big mistake then by giving it a 98%, those kind of errors can not be tolerated!

SAY NO TO CLIPPING!

You aren't going to have time to notice these things...

These are Antlions, they are ATTACKING you, they are moving around. You are preoccupied with all the action on top of that.

Don't worry!

And plus, ragdolls collide with other ragdolls and physical objects. That's good to know. :)

Actually those antlions look like they are on your side.
Hmm.. Looks like your right.

Oh well!
I don't understand why they don't have proper hitboxes though..

If that cabinet is a physical object I mean..

If it is, shouldn't it be pushed aside?

I did notice that and it looks horrible!!...in a screenshot...in game, I don't think that will bother me too much..

Doom 3 has no clipping issues. It's very good in that regard.
Clipping is a trivial thing though. It doesn't bother me much and I'm sure it's not very noticeable. Especially in motion.

Well it's bad if the clipping affects the game. Like in CS:S a hostage got caught in a cabinet and it was impossible to complete the mission without killing the hostage (I was counter-terrorist) =)

You get the drift...

CS:S still uses the buggy CS code for the hostage AI. It's a PORT of an old game.
