HELP! The consoles have taken over my computer! halo, now farcry!
it seems that now I have to look for "designed for the PC" or something like that. Imagine my dismay to pay $50 for a state of the art "PC" game only to find a pretty, shiny port of a game orginally designed for a console! I feel used.

One quick way to tell if a game was designed for a console vs PC is the visible text, and no game save options.

If you see no text on the HUD of an FPS, but you get bars or pretty lights, there ya go, or if the text is REAL lo res, like 320x240. that because its designed to be played on a TV!

also if you have no regular game save/load or quick save/load function
thats also a dead giveaway! you get crap messages like "new content unlocked" and "checkpoint". Also the games play to a MUCH younger target audience, say around 10 or so, this is the dumbing down taking place for the console crowd!

I am really starting to see this as coming full circle, where the companies who are just in it for the bucks will go console only and get out of the PC gaming entirely, but the REAL gaming companies will continue to evolve the content, AI, and graphics.

Also, if you think that having MS control hardware AND software in your PC
is a GOOD thing, put your head back down in the sand and stop talking.

Imagine my dismay when I pay $50 for a console game only to find out that it was just a crappy port of a PC game...woooee...

ouch that hurt, only the reply I have is this:
The $50 I spent came from my own pocket from my $10 hr job AFTER I pay my mortgage and bills. The $50 spent on many console game CD's come from mommy and daddy. I dont mean to sound bitter, but I just can't stand console games pretending to be PC games just to sell another 50k units.

Just read a few reviews first, and gaming is hard when your income is only $10/h. My dad makes that much and he has to pay for everything and support a family of 4. ****ing Clinton cut back....ah this is OT....

Microsoft has brought about some good things. PC gaming is much simpler than it used to be, thanks to DirectX. And I dare say that Windows XP is a rather good operating system.

But what's this about pc hardware becoming extinct? Not even a million consoles can threaten the pc. When it's time for theoretical physics, a Playstation just doesn't cut it.

Your point is valid when it comes to raw numbers on installed base PC vs consoles,
but we are limiting this comparison to gaming only.

The fundamental problem is this: When junior turns 8 or so, and starts bugging mom/dad for a game to play, are they more apt to take the cheaper and easier way out, ie... the elctronic babysitter: AKA- "the console". Rather than buy the kid a PC
that might actually do the kid some good other than gaming.

and yes MS has done SOME good, DirectX being a good example..

Good lord, reading this topic has given me a headache.
Theres about as much chance of the PC disappearing as there is of the sun exploding at the moment. With the importance that the internet has gained in modern society the number of computers in the average home is exploding. At this point almost EVERYONE has one, and many people need them for their livelihood. Computer's aren't going anywhere.
As for what parents will buy their kids, the answer is of course a console. Its been this way since the NES though, thats nothing new. Its the best way for anyone to get interested in gaming and is both cheap and simple. Many will of course become interested in playing games on their home PCs, like most of us did.
As for the complaint about console games taking over the PC market I have to ask just what you've been smoking recently. Farcry is and has always been a PC game, and while it looks like it may be ported to the XBox in the future it was never designed for the system. There are a few small instances such as Deus Ex 2 where it was simplified for consoles, but those are few and far between. Go to your local Babbages and most of the games you see on the PC shelves are PC games and PC games alone.

Want to cry.....?
