I need your help on whether I should spend my money upgrading my pc (which just doesnt work when it comes to playing games) or buy a next-gen console like an xbox 360.
whilst i'm usually a pc man, i'm just sick of all the crashing and errors you can get. ( i've had my pc since november and it hasnt been able to play hl2 for longer than half an hour without crashing) I just like the idea of consoles being garaunteed to work, and if they don't you can take them back to the shops. If the xbox had an internet browser, there'd be no decision to make :D

So what do you think, xbox 360 or upgrade my pc (which would probably cost slightly more) ?

I would advise on going for the console. it'll be the move I eventually make, as I can't be arsed upgrading my machine which is rapidly going out of date.

But really, the choice is entirely yours. Just weigh up the options, such as internet, keyboard and mouse, an outlet for more than gamingetc. or consoles being quick, easy and reliable. :)

well, my computer is fine for everything except gaming, so i can still use the internet and stuff.

edit: after seeing the games coming out for xbox 360, i think i will be getting it. CoD2 and stuff are the kind of games i would buy for my pc anyway.

Im in the same situation as you and i choose xbox360, going to buy it asap :)
But of course, if you play much First Person Shooter games it might be worth thinking deeply, since the console wont come with any keyboard or mouse.

FPSs are all i play really, but the wiggly sticks can be as good as a mouse with practice :)

For slow paced, and single player, fps I think analogue control is better :)

It feels more like you're taking careful aim for a joypad - and is far more satisfying when you pull off a decent shot (espeically when squeezing a trigger button and feeling the rumble). It's one of the reasons Halo (Xbox) > Halo (pc) by such a massive amount. It's also one of the reasons that GE is one of the best fps ever, and would never work on a pc. Add to this how much analogue improves over keyboard control when it comes to movement and immersion. Digital movement sucks.

Of course, any fast multiplayer action that demands super quick and accurate aiming needs a mouse :) *remembers Q3 on the DC and vomits*

// back on topic

The 360 looks like great value for money. It'll be worth the price tag for live alone imo. Being able to play arcade games and beatemups over the net is such a refreshing change from rts and fps (which, at least in the latter, it will cater for too). It's new old skool :)

*logs onto Live for some SF2 \o/*

I think it's better because you get less Carpel Tunnel :P

But yeah, the joystick kinda immerses you more. It can be hard to pull of multiple shots at once though with the joysticks. Like, in HL1, you wouldn't make it through Xen without mouse and keyboard. With the mouse, hand eye coordination becomes a much larger factor, and you'll find that you dont' even have to look at a target (directly) to hit it.

Sure, but Xen was designed with a m&k in mind.

Both control methods have their pros and cons, I just prefer a joypad for any title that focuses on immersion and/or involves stealth.

don't want to make another xbox 360 thread, so i'm just gonna ask here.
The ps3's coming out after the xbox 360, so doesn't that mean the ps3 will be better?

Naw.

It may be better, but only time and the titles released for both formats will tell.

You can buy an xbox360 and it will last for a few years. PC upgrades are expensive, but I like the PC games more.

CoD2 on PC will be 100x better than CoD2 on Xbox360. And no, Joysticks will never compare to mouse.

but the thing is, my pc doesnt work and it would cost nearly as much as an xbox 360 to fix it. and then its due an upgrade.

So? I'd rather spend extra on a decent PC than have to stoop to the level of console gaming.

And he HAS spent extra on a decent PC, by the looks of his signature.

thing is, i spent loads on my pc and the only game i have bought for it is hl2, and even that doesn't work properly. if i get a console i won't be having to worry about 'will my pc play this?', 'is my hardware good enough?'. the only reason i use my pc now is the internets.

Pfft. Go start a thread in Hardware Software and we could help find out what's wrong with it, then we could help you fix it!

Upgrade your PC instead.
I, for example, am not going to bother myself with consoles, no matter how good their graphics are.

Indeed.

Cause you know that in just a year or two, when that consoles graphics and processor go out of date, you can STILL upgrade your pc.

Only problem I could see with PC's is that stuff goes wrong. Allot.

hehe. we're back to my reason for deciding to buy a console.

Sure, for better graphics.

You'll still be stuck with a rather small selection of games though.

Like it or not, the majority of games worth owning appear on consoles. This isn't to say that there aren't some great pc titles, just not as many.

It's pretty safe to say that there will be many amazing games released next generation on the Revolution, PS3 and 360 that will never see the light of day on the pc.

this is the forum of a PC so you know what people will tell you "UPGRADE PC CONSOLES REPRESENT ALL IS WORNG AND BAD IN THIS WORLD AND A PC IS LIKE A WIFE BUY THE PC!!!!LOLOLO"

upgrade a PC will cost more that a console so I think a next gen console will be cheaper

and I agree whit the one that say that whit practique a controller can be so easy as a mouse

Are you serious? I can think of a few games in the past few years that were big titles.. but all were released on PC. Halo is on PC, Halo2 isn't yet. All the GTA games are on PC. Ok, RE4 isn't on PC. Fable will be on PC in September. I can't think of too many other super awesome titles for consoles?

Better selection of games on PC, and better games all around on PC. Better graphics on PC, mouse and keyboard on PC. Internet on PC, everything else you could possibly want is on PC. Let's see consoles.. good graphics for a month or two after release. A ton of crappy games, a few good ones to be ported to PC within months.

^Own3d. There is no way I will get a console and play it on my wonderfull 6 year old TV, and a good HDTV will cost as much as a top-notch video card.

GABE SAID NO!

CONSOLES SUCK! LOL

He actually did say that consoles were harder to make games for, because the technology is old before the game is ready for the platform.

Or something like that.

NO NO NO...Gabe said that it will be hard to make games for the 360 because of the multicore processor. Eventually PC's will make full use of Multicore processores, (right now you can buy them, but your just wasting money), and then Games will be hard to make on them too.

That just shows how tiny the world of video games you live in is. You're probably blissfully unaware, or have never played, many of the great games that are available on consoles.

And very average when compared to the Xbox version.

You can not be serious. Seriously.

That's all down to personal taste - so no point arguing this one.

No. The pc has better hardware, and the potential for 'better' looking games. Unfortunately the result is very often another drab and boring looking game with zero imagnation. Art direction and creativity > specs.

Great for a few genres, horrible for the rest.

The very best console games very rarely, if ever, appear on the pc.

Indeed.

I guess it sorta depends on the genre's you like. Like MMO's and FPS'? Then go for the PC upgrades.

Like racing games, platformers and... Erm.. Everything else? Get a console.

Console FPS and PC FPS have nothing to do with each other, that's why they barely ever port FPSs, and if they do, they are much better on their original medium.

PC FPS tend to be about precision shooting. The characters are smaller, farther away, and the weapons are much much more precise. Console FPSs are more "shoot-em-up" style games (with exceptions such as BIA). Halo for example has a very innacurate automatic rifle, so I loved playing it with the controller but it was extremely frustrating with a mouse. Delta Force: BHD however blew big time on the console since it's all about shooting people miles away.

Personally, I'm gonna stay PC for a long time for the precision shooting and the better graphics, and also the customization that's available. I can definetly see the upside of consoles, but meh, not for me.

Does the 360 have any exclusives? Seems like most of the games are coming to PC as well. I was thinking of getting one but if I can play the same games on PC, I'll stick with PC.

How can you say that PC games lack art direction with Half-life 2, prey, FEAR, Battlefield 2, AOIII, Black & White 2? Maybe there are more better looking games art-wise on the console, but there's plenty enough to please _my_ PC_gamer eyes.

I disagree. Prince of Persia, BiA, Hitman and GTA:SA were the best selling console games and they made their way to the PC.

One thing: can you please stop saying consoles are better because there are more good games?

FACT: PC gamers aren't about to run out of games! We really really aren't! So that the console has more good games is not necessarily an advantage, since it will prevent you from buying all the games you want, or will be much more expensive.

We're PC gamers for a reason, we don't envy your platformers, we're extremely happy with our FPS, RTS and MMO. Otherwise we would immediatly switch to the console, no doubt.
