PC won't recognise extra new 1 gig RAM.

I bought a couple of 512 meg sticks of 3200 Generic RAM the other day and I can't seem to get my PC to recognised that it's in there.

I have a Giga-byte K7NNXP MoBo with 4 RAM slots and all are filled with 512 chips, and also all the chips run at 3200.

Would anyone have any recommendations as to how I can get the computer to see that I have 2 gig installed instead of 1 gig? I've had a look at my bios to see if there are any options that I might be able to switch on when installing extra RAM, but I've drawn a blank...:(

As always, I appreciate the input you guys have in the Hardware + Software section of the site. Always quick on the ball and eager to help :) Thanks in advance.

Don't you have to reset the CMOS or something so it detects the RAM again?
I'm probably wrong though. Don't try it unless someone else says it's right :p

Whenever i put in more RAM it just detects it automatically.

Sometimes you have to put the RAM in in a certian order if they are different sizes. Like to the 512s might have to be in slots 1 and 3, and then put the gig stick in slot 2.

Or your motherboard just dosent support sticks bigger than 512. Or maybe the stick is bad.

Consult your motherboard manual.

Ummmmm, WhiteZero, he said all his sticks were 512. Anyways....are they different brands of RAM?

Oh, right right.

Anyway, try putting them in slots 1 and 3.

Have you tried the new memory without your old memory in there? If it works by itself then the memory could be conflicting with the other memory. What did you put in there? Brand/models

Mkay, Ive tried a few things...And managed to get 1.5 gig of my 2 gig running. I rearranged the chips in pretty much every combination you could think of, but the 4th slot doesnt recognise any chips. I'm starting to think it's a faulty slot...

So yeah I got it up to 1.5 gig BUT if I put RAM in the 4th slot, then only 1 gig is recognised. So I'm thinking it's either a conflict in the 4th slot or the 4th slot doesn't work right. Is this a sort of problem that can be solved?

Oh yeah Asus, all the RAM is generic/unregistered. On 2 of the 4 chips it says Hynix and on the other I think it says Elixer. Doesn't mean squat to me, but maybe you could fill me in?

Some Memory controllers don't perform right when you max out the slots. They have limitations with just how many sticks you can use at full speed. For example if you had 1GB sticks then it wouldn't have a problem (if that was the problem). I would do some searching on the internet or go to Anandtech.com's forums and ask around.

Is it a dual channel board? Did you make sure you matched the same types of memory on the same banks so they aren't mixed.

I'm not really sure what it would be otherwise. Slots don't usually go bad without other problems.

Yeah, I put the Hynix in the first 2 and the Elixer in the second 2 slots. It is a Dual Channel Board. That's a bummer if the 4th slot doesn't work 'cause I cant get my money back. I'll check out Anandtech.com, thanks for your help.

Have you tried disabling any dual channel options because it might be trying to run the DIMMs in dualchannel mode and not being able to, not totally sure about that, just a thought. Hope it helps.

how do you disable dual channel? Is it a bios option? I'd definately give it a shot, I'm pretty keen to get that last 512 chip up and running.

Not too sure, but you should justhave a look in the bios to see what there is. Not even sure there is an option to do so, think its upto the memory controller but i'm not too sure. Worth a look though.

I don't think there is an option to disable Dual Channel mode. There isn't on my motherboard, Asus P4P800E Deluxe

Yeh thats what I thought. Dunno what to suggest really. Have you tried updating your bios, if you havent, then check out what is sorted by updating the bios because if its got nothing to do wtih memory then don't do it as a bios upgrade imo should be a last resort to a problem.
