when pci express comes to amd, will it be on socket 939?

or is 745 good enough for hard core gaming?

Well, the issue of what socket to get really comes down to what you can afford. The 745 is what regular Athlon64s are built for. The 939/940 socket is built for the Athlon64-FX series. It needs the extra pins in the socke because it is built with a dual channel memory interface and 3 hypertransport ports. Where the normal Athlon64 has a single channel memory interface and only 1 hypertransport port.

The Athlon64-FX series is built with gamers in mind, and so obviously does better in games than a standard Athlon64. What you need to decide is if you're willing to pay hundreds of dollars more in order to get a few more frames per second. If you get an FX, you won't have to upgrade your processor for a longer period of time, but you'll pay quite a bit more up front.

If what you want is the ultimate gamming PC, get the socket 939, make sure it's got dual channel memory on the motherboard, and get 2 sticks of ram (1 for each channel).

IMO, the FX isn't worth the money. It performs better, but not hundreds of dollars better. And they'll both be available with PCI-Express. But don't ask me when. All I can say is that I've heard it's supposed to be some time this fall.

But wait a minute now they're making new A64's for Socket 939, the ones 3500+ and higher. I thought 939 was replacing 754? Or are they still gonna use socket 754 for A64's in the future?

Socekt 754 is the new home to the Sempron processor (think Athlon XP replacement).

but is 745 going to bite the dust, or will 939 be the new standard?

There is not a replacement of standards but a shift of focus and making room for the high-end, mainstream and value CPUs to be centered around Athlon 64 platforms. No biting of dust. :P
cough cough
Athlon XP is being phased out though, sooner or later.
