A pretty unimportant question, but something that has just made me think for a minute;

For any of you with english as a second language, when you were taught english, was it English(UK) or English(American)

E.G. were you taught:
American - English
color or colour,
specialize or specialise, (or any other ize/ise word)

or
trunk or boot (of a car)
sidewalk or pavement
pants or trousers (not refering to underwear)

As i said this is unimportant but please endulge one of my late night thoughts.

If they learned near the UK, then that
If they learned in america, then american

Other place, they might have learned synonyms
And could understand either.
In spanish class i learn spain spanish
And mexican spanish.

And i use both sidewalk and pavement

sidewalk and pavement are two different things in American English.

Sidewalk is the sidewalk (the concrete side area for walking, as goes the name)

Pavement is the road itself. The black tar substance it's made of (also called asphault, probably spelled it wrong)

It's not that Americans are lazy, it's just that we're more productive. Why right an extra U when you get the same output without it? Not putting the U has saved us billions in printing costs with books! What with all the unused ink and all.

Brittish English of course. It's the true english.

But to be honest, sometimes I write Armour, other times Armor, sometimes Color other times Colour, etc etc...I fluctuate.

Twix, It's all in the mix. I learned both, even though I live in Norway, and UK is like our neighbour out there in the ocean.

It usually depends on the teachers though. Some of them use the books a lot, which are UK-English, and others don't prepare for class so they don't use the books and use the American language. People usually understand what I'm saying, so I guess I learned enough.

my point exactly!! americans cant be bothered to say aluminium properly so they just say...and i love this...ALUMINUM...ahahaha it just sounds wrong. yes yes yes so what if its in the american dictionary..it isnt in the english, and where would america be without us in the first place many years ago...hmm...

i see it as almost every properly spelt english word there is, americans seem to take 1 letter out of.

I did not compare Portugal to America. I compared Portugal / Brazil - UK/America.

Brazil is way more influential in the world than Portugal, but when you go to a Portuguese lesson, you learn Portugal's Portuguese.

The British made the freaking language, just because Americans adopted it doesn't means they have the right to hijack it all for yourselves.

I learnt a bit of both in school, depended on the teacher. But nowadays, I tend to stick with British English, cause I wanna be a brit but it doesn't mean it's the proper English, nor is Am. English.

You dont pronounce the 'g' in gnome...but its how its spelt, its one of the reasons why they say english is the hardest launguage to learn. It is complicated and anyone not brought up to speak english would probably spell gnome like nome.

Anyway i dont actually give a shit because i speak british english and spell things how i was taught to spell them. If my english teacher taught me american english then id spell colour like color or armour like armor but my english teacher _didnt_ teach me american english, she taught me british english.

The british are more polite speaking...snotty if you must, plus we have a royal family who really show how snotty british english is.

^ok that i have to agree with. the uk has so many accents its unbelievable: from the couldnt-get-any-more-'snotty' royal family accent, to the worst accents in the world : anyone from the north of england (midlands and above). even londeners are SOOOOO annoying...innit...argh i just hate that word!

anyway, its true how you spell things the way you were taught to. i just dont see the REAL reason why americans are considered to have their own language, when the most commonly, therefore correct, language worldwide is 'ENGLISH' and not american...

just puzzles me thats all
