People who don't like spoilers

Why do people come to forums for HL2 if they don't want to read new information/spoilers?

I just want to understand the logic behind it. Because if i didn't want to find out new information/spoilers i would stay the hell away from forums such as this one as i know it's risky business. In the coming days/weeks we're going to be engulfed in a flood information and a select group of people will constantly be pointing out the fact that you said a "spoiler".

So what's the stance on this? Are people allowed to openly talk about new information without using those spoiler tags? Perhaps a non-spoiler forum should be created like www.theforce.net (http://boards.theforce.net/The_Star_Wars_Films/c10001/) .
 
When the real spoilers come (ie. the actual game comes out), we'll be making a spoiler forum or something similar to that premise, so nobody has to suffer. We're going to have to lay some strict rules down for anyone that posts spoilers outside of designated areas.

Okay....this is a simple concept.



I will enjoy the game more if I dont every last detail before I play it. I still want to know the technical info...and the official tidbits of game info. I dont want you assholes to ruin the suprises before the game is even released.

To me...only info that is leaked before it is officialy annouced is a spoiler. ie....THE ****ING LEAK. Everything else is fair game. I hope you dont wonder why people get pissed at you when you base things off of/reveal things from the leak.
 
im kind of with you. in one of my other posts i made the point that all of this newly released info isnt really spoiler material. like i said, just knowing that HL1 starts with a tram ride certainly dosent stop you from enjoying it. its all in the way valve implements it that make it awesome. however, i dont think that unofficially released info should be discussed, because anything valve dosent want us to know is obviously supposed to be found out in game. but people complaining about knowing a guys name is just silly, like i said before i could have told you months ago that there would be an antagonist.
 
I only want the information that Valve intended us to have. I do NOT want to hear that information from some inconsiderate 12 year old that used his l33t h4xx0ring skills0rz on Kazaa to download the stolen build.
I don't care about information that's in magazines, because Valve wants us to know it, but the information that they do not give us, and which do reaches us because of some inconsiderate asshole, there's a reason why that information is not given.
I'd like to start the game fresh, I love it that I don't know much about it, with games like Doom 3 and Far Cry, I already had the feeling that I played them before they were even out (are in the case of Doom 3, are not out yet)

I do not consider the information in the PC Games magazine a spoiler, neither do I consider the information that the e3 will provide us a spoiler. But it depends on where you draw the line, there are undoubtedly people who consider the last year's e3 video's a giant spoiler.

EDIT: and besides, the only real spoilers are from the stolen build, which is illegal, and now YOU are questioning US that we're bitching about spoilers? You're the one who's wrong here for wanting to discuss the leak (if that was your intention of course)
 
there is a different between info and spoilers... i want to know what valve want us to know i dont want to know what happens in the game

Damn...You know how it shows the first post in a brownish box when you highlight the thread. I just checked the HL2-storyline discussion site 'cause I was bored, and before I could move the mouse I accidentally saw quite a tremendous spoiler.

People, I warn you, don't even check the site.

Not bitching, just trying to understand other peoples points of view on spoilers.

So far from the responses
-A spoiler is anything Valve haven't officially released/acknowledge
-Anything from the beta is a spoiler

I don't think anyone can definitively seperate a spoiler from new information. If you're going to define new information as Valve endorsed there will be people who'll find that to be of a spoiling nature. I'm sure there are pissed off people who watched the E3 video and now know you get to drive a buggy. Massive spoiler!

As it is now we're all thrown into the mix. People who want to find as much info as they can about the story/characters and people who don't want to find anything out. Do we have to spoiler tag every piece of new info from magazines like that German mag thread? Can i just blurt out stuff as I see fit without annoying people?
 
Yeah, im with the rest, I like (crave?) official info but I dont want other stuff. I trust valve not to let on to the big secrets in the game but I dont trust people who downloaded the leak. Its info from the leak I have a problem with.

Actually I come to the forum to discuss info on HL2, I use the News section to find out new info :)
 
No we dont have to restrict all info, but we should restrict some. A sensible medium needs to be reached, and I think hiding non-valve-endorsed info a good place. It just so happens to coincide with what I want :) (but what most people seem to want)

Because we want to discuss other aspects of Half-Life 2 and hope that others respect our wishes by clearly marking spoilers so that we can avoid them.
 
A spoiler is whatever YOU decide is too much. Everyone has to decide what they want to know and what they don't, and consideration for others should lead you to at least announce that you are going to post spoilers beforehand. Some people post spoilers for no reason other than to show off that they know, which is pretty lame to begin with.
 
I want to be able to debate the possibilities without some1 coming into the discussion and revealing the answer.


Forums are made for discussions, posting the answers that are from dubious sources etc... renders the entire discussion mute.


not to mention the BS. some1 posts and then some1 else belives it and it turns into "Fact" wich only veterans of the HL2 process can see as fake, and then have to spend hours convincing people that they should use common sence.

Ie. the 2005 rumour.
 
I dont see how anyone can get so upset about a spioler but gobble up everyting that valve releases, think about it, if valve never released the info about the grav gun, and someone talked about it on the fourms, all of you guys would get pissed, all you guys got soo pissed when that dude talked about welding, but i dont think any of you would care in the slightest if valve released it! i just dont see how you guys think that way.
 
Exactly, if you dont understand how they think then don't try to second guess them by posting stuff they might not want to see.

Not everything we hear about the game is part of the story. Some may come to hear technical information about the game. Some may jsut want to know about the characters and not the story. Putting what Apos said into a sentence, Spoilers are in the eye of the beholder. Its not really your place to decide what others should see so really the spoilers tages should be used if there is a chance it could ruin it for someone. Also, a little infor about what the spoiler is would help. For example you could state whether its about the story, characters, weapons or something else.

Some may not even want to hear what Valve says, and that is their choice. We shouldn't ruin it for them just because we feel its ok. And those who listen to everything valve says and nothing else, well they probably feel that Valve knows what they are doing by releasing the info they do.
 
If someone drops a "rosebud" caliber spoiler though, I would be right pissed off.
 
i wnt to have certain things kept secret and yet still be able to talk about ideas regarding the game. I do not want to know how the game starts....People who say...oh well if you knew HL started with a tram it wouldn't make a difference....are idiots. This is a sequel! not an entirely separate game, if you old me the first HL started with the tram i wouldn't give two shits because i have no idea what the game is based around, this game i do and so from the outset there shall be plot information that knowledge of the first game gives.

Just be considerate, it's like someone telling you key parts from a film if that makes it clearer for anyone!
 
valve release information that they see fit which will still kinda keep a sense of mistery about the game. When people start posting things about the Leaked version then thats just plan ignorence, because in a way they are spoiling the suprise for many including myself.

so why they should feel obligated to post spoliers i have no idea. :S
 
Spoilers, before the game is out, are bad: posting them is proof you've played the stolen build, which is illegal.

I'd guess that the mods don't appreciate people essentially declaring that they're helping to amplify Valve's screw-over.
 
Offical VALVe info == Not Spoilers. Unspoilers? Non Spoiled?

Anyway... Beta crap == SPOILER CITY.

People were starting to think it was alright to post spoilers in the Rumours and Speculation forums for a while there...

Another thing I hate is when someone drops a spoiler from the Beta, but conversationally disguises it as "speculation"... I know they've gotten it from the beta, they know it's beta material, but to point it out to the forumites would spoil things more for the people who don't know it's a spoiler...
 
but what if you are wrong and they dont have the build and they just guessed correctly, then if you say that it is a spioler then you are ruining the game not only for the poster but for the other people too....
 
May I point out that part of the point of my above post was that I don't point out spoilers I see? Except to mods, of course...
