Perfect Dark coming to XBLA this March

Strafe running? Presumably some kind of exploit from the original?

So um... has anyone else noticed Peter Molyneux modeled among the guards? I swear to god it's him. Of course by the time I'm done shooting his face into a fine paste it's a little hard to tell for sure. :B

Yeah, I saw that when going through the faces for multiplayer guard skins!

It looks exactly like him!

Edit: It was apparently officially revealed at X10 that Peter Molyneux's face would be in the game.

Reason behind it you ask?

"It's actually Nintendo's influence that lead to Molyneux's inclusion: the original game featured the figureheads of the Japanese platform holder, including Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. For the XBLA rebirth, they've been replaced with Microsoft equivalents."

I just wonder how much of the luster will be lost after a few levels of play and whether the difference in controller will have any negative impact. I wish I had a 360 to play this on to find out for myself.

I was also curious to see how well PD's gameplay held up today as it's impossible to tell by going back to the original, with it's murky visuals and fit inducing framerate. After now spending time playing single and multiplayer on the xbl version i'm finding it hard to be objective - the nostalgia levels induced by the music alone (best video game score ever?) is enough to knock over a decade off my life and make me burst out in zits. Obviously it looks dated - lips don't move when npcs speak and texture detail is low - but gameplay is buttery smooth. The most striking differece between PD and more recent shooters is that no concessions are made to the player. You aren't put in training wheels and led by the hand through levels or wrapped up in a bubble wrap of checkpoints and quick saves. You have to work things out and not get shot. I know, it sounds crazy

Strafe running was where you strafe with either the left or right C-button (I found right easier) and pushed the control stick in the opposite direction. I suppose you could consider it an exploit, but it was something that was in both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. I've noticed now that the normal running speed in the remake seems like it might have been increased, so it could be irrelevant. Now I just need to remember were all of the secret weapons in all the levels are. There's a Phoenix in the second Area 51 one level, but I can't for the life of me remember how to get to it.

I'll have to download this soon. XBL gamertag is 'Dandan Manchild'

I was just doing the "Escape from Area 51" mission, and it looks like you just kind of "push the hoverbike around" instead of ever actually getting on it. Was it like that in the original or is that some kind of glitch?

You're probably forgetting to double tap 'use' (A I think).

I can't say for sure unless I see video of it, but the hoverbike always felt kind of duct-taped to the rest of the game. Didn't feel right.

I think I just found a reason to finally buy a 360.

I don't think I ever beat the campaign on N64. It's actually a pretty tough game when you don't know/remember how to do the objectives. I've been struggling with the solo campaign on Special Agent difficulty. It's also pretty damn hard to aim, especially when you use the LT to zoom in. WAY to twitchy. When you have Machine Gun turrets to take out it becomes almost impossible. Multiplayer is still fun as hell though.

This is my only gripe. It is much easier to manually aim with the N64 pad (apparently it's something to do with the 360 pad's dead zone that makes tiny adjustments more difficult). This is such an integral part of the game - without it you're forced to use the on screen crosshair on Perfect Agent - as being able to accurately and quickly take out cameras and make head/hand/foot shots is a required skill. Rare say there may be a fix ...

Aside from this, Perfect Dark is pretty much perfect.

The hoverbike really doesn't make any sense in any level except Airforce One: Crash. There it is incredibly useful and fun.

For whatever reason, I haven't got round to buying this yet. Is the fun training level glitch with the hover-box still around? Remember you have to jam it into the door of the firing range and then choose a weapon like the throwing knives and turn the person outside the door into a living pin cushion. Honestly, at 10 years old or whatever, that was the funnest thing in the world for hours on end.

Just played through the first mission and the nostalgia was overwhelming haha, but it just took me those 3 missions to be fully reminded at how amazing this game is, so many FPSs these days could learn so much from this and Goldeneye (which should also be given to us via arcade!).

But I agree, aiming on this is an absolute bitch, took me about 2 minutes at the start just to shoot one camera out haha. I find turning the sensitivity down helps a bit though.

After doing a bit of versus/co-op with some friends last night I've determined this game is WAY passed it's time. Take off your nostalgia glasses HL2.net.

It comes down to personal taste. I still keep an N64 around to play the original with my brothers 3-4 times a year.

Patch inbound :)

'Fix for Achievement bugs so that ‘Tools of the Trade’ can be unlocked.
Aim sensitivity sliders will be added to the options menu.
Legacy and Southpaw control settings will be added to the options menu.
Players will now be able to swap triggers.
Hardcore Playlist will be added with the removal of radar and auto-aim functions.'

Good stuff!

I'm going to hold off single player untill the manual aim can be sorted.

Is this worth getting if I already own a n64 and perfect dark?

Yeah.
Have you looked at the god damn N64 controller?
I don't think I can go back to it after being spoiled with two analog sticks.

Man, I was spoiled by having beaten the original so many years ago and having everything unlocked. Some of these challenges and missions are ****ing difficult.

Aim sensitivity sliders will be added to the options menu.

Oh excellent.

Is this worth getting if I already own a n64 and perfect dark?

For $10? Absolutely. It's a remarkably faithful recreation and is a whole lot of fun.

Most definately. For everything that seems dated you'll find something excellent that current fps barely touch on. I haven't enjoyed a single player shooter as much in while.

There's something almost zen like about PD on Pefect Agent.

Yeah.

Yeah, the controller is pretty damn bad. But I've been playing the 64 off and on for years now, so im still pretty used to it. I think I'll get the 360 version anyways based on what you guys are saying though.

For those geeky enough to care :)
