PHL SIGGRAPH 2004, new HL2 screens.

Right on brother!

I do believe some of these can be found in the HDR bink made for GDC.

Holy smoke, the "Infrastructure" pics look exactly like an Eastern European city blocks... the fact that Antonov is Russian explains it perfectly. The guy can really draw environments very well...

Sorry man didnt mean to steal your thunder, just was supprised that no-one had posted it before .
Cool pics though, eh?

holy crapping crap... the photorealism!! MY EYES!!!!!!

I can't tell. These days you can't tell video games from reality!

yeeh slide 8 = photo

but still, hats off to valve... the 1st pic is simply amazing.

I do believe that screenshot (slide8_hi) is a real life picture .. not in game...

I wish it did look that good tho

yeah, i was gonna say. i wouldnt see a game running with those graphics this side of 2310

I'd bet on photo-realistic graphics in the next 30 years.

"Antonov is Russian..."

Now that explains everything. I used to think who the heck came up with this European environments for HL2?, which is very unique IMO.

At least something different from the usual space, mars, futuristic stuff.

try the next ten, latest being 2015. by then we should have photo realistic graphics. outdoor city street scene's in Unreal 3 already look close to photo realism, another 5o to 10 will give us those photo realistic textures and archetecture.

I don't know about that... look at the gap between HL and HL2 or Unreal 1, 2, & 3. Could only two more gaps of that length get us to true photorealism? We can't even render a single frame of a simple scene with accurate lighting (not that Doom 3 crap) in less than several seconds. We're supposed to be doing that same process on MUCH more geometrically complex scenes in about 1/1000th of the amount of time? I'm not sure if 10 years is going to be enough for truly "photorealistic" graphics in real-time games... while also handling realistic physics (including fluid dynamics), sound, AI, etc.

I hope we can, but I doubt we will. Photorealism is a very lofty goal.

that shot isnt in game
it looks WAY to real
it has to be some kind of area scouting

It isn't of course - the in-game counterpart of that shot is this:

Well it's not exactly the same shot - but it's in the same loaction. The other pic had way too realistic shadowing/lighting - something which I doubt even the D3 engine could achieve anyway. (look at the shadow casted by the antenna/dish thingy and the supports)

Although This in-game shot is nothing short of STUNNING!

Seriously, valve's done their homework in level design:

(amazing lighting)

(check out the spiffy bump-mapping on the cliff face)

Erm "19b" is in-game, "19a" is not.

It is in-game. A scene from tunnels from last year's E3 binks.
