Hello citizens! I just completed HL2 and read in the credits something like: "Thanks to the following for the use of their faces"
So I thought, hey, it would be cool (I am lame, therefore thinking lame things are cool) to see what the actual persons that make the characters in the game look like (and no, not just becouse Alyx is hot) so I searched the net for some time and was able to find a picture of the real Dr. Eli (Larry Heard). Wasn't able to find either Gordon or Alyx though... (if they even exist, perhaps some characters were just made up in the modelers' heads?) just curious to see if anyone else found anything??

One time in the airport I saw a guy who looked exactly like gman, exept he had a black bag instead of a buisness case...

Hey i found an awsome pic. a few weeks ago. And so i posted it. But they said it was copyright shit so they removed it. To bad :(. And thats why I have a warning level 5 now :(

If you buy raising the bar, they have the in game faces next to the faces of people who provided them, and suffice to say therye bloody spot on, you couldnt tell the difference between eli, to be honest.

I was having a late night dinner at Dennys a few weeks ago and I saw a man sitting there that could have ****ing been Dr. Gordon Freeman. Everything was the same, the glasses, goatie, and the haircut. What I found funny was he was there with someone who was gabbing there head off and I never even heard him say one thing in response, my girlfriend said I shoulda asked him if he knew who Gordon Freeman was but meh.

That guy is not Eli. You couldn't tell the difference between the real-life Eli and the in game model... well, except that the real-life one was a poor guy with a sign asking for work.

Alyx was a lady called Jamil Mullen. The G-Man is a Doctor Frank Sheldon. Dr Kliener is a guy called Ted Cohrt who is the accountant for a firm in the same building as Valve. By and large, these people aren't particuarlly famous - they just have striking faces.

Gordon is an oddity. A model for his face does exist... somewhere, but it is not composed of the facial features of any one guy - it is taken from facial references of four Valve employees: David Speyrer, Eric Kirchmer, Greg Coomer and Kelly Bailey. (If you have RtB, it shows how the four faces are combined to make the freeman face. quite interesting).

All of this information can be found in Raising the Bar. Just don't go looking for scans naughtee.

Cool! well i guess it's up to me to meet a look-a-like alyx :E. Now I need to take my camera with me everyday. ;)

Yeah raising the bar has it all, and Gordon Freeman is the combination of many different people's faces.

The G-man looks like the real life guy, and Dr Kleiner is an accountant in an office next to Valve.

lol I saw Gordon Freeman in my physics class once. Black frame spectacles and all.

And the face for Eli was a man standing on the street, holding a sign looking for work.

Valve show their human models off in Raising the Bar. I highly recommend you guys buying it, even though they're quite rare now. Its perfect. There is some interesting concept arts and story boards. The real faces are amazingly like the in-game models. Dr. Kliener is based off an accountant who works above their office. In the book it says, some of the Valve team bump into him at starbucks and wonder why he looks so familiar (obviously they don't know he was based on Dr. Kliener. Eli Vance was based off a homeless guy who had a sign up in the street.

There are some interesting facts in there. Highly recommend it.

Edit - Dammit, I should actually read over peoples post. *Cough*

Do you also know how mutch they payed him?
5 shillings and six-pence.

Well, ok. No I don't know. It's safe to assume that most of them were paid: the majority are friends of friends, random people of the street or people who responded to a newspaper ad (they had a real difficulty getting female faces). No sum has been disclosed though...

As you're from just over the channel, perhaps the UK branch of amazon is a good bet... Actually, looks like the French branch has it as well. It's not particuarlly cheap (I remember getting mine quite cheap), but it's a well put together book with pretty impressive production standards.

How many did you guys payed for your "Raising the Bar book"? I just want to be sure that i don't pay to mutch for it.

I got mine off Amazon.co.uk, looked like they had plenty left, that was before Christmas though.

Mine was £13.99.

£14.49 off of Game UK. But that was pre-release and the prices have since inflated to about £17. You'll probably not find a better deal than that anyway.

13.99 pounds = 20 euro. And I found the Raising the Bar for 32 euro. Damn.

Well, you're not likely to find it anywhere for that 20 euro / £13.99 price anymore. Say if you got it for £16.48 (23.6439 EUR) from Amazon UK, you'd still have to pay about £4 on top of that for packaging fees.

£20.48 = 29.3654 EUR

32 Euros = 22.3173 GBP

It's not going to be cheap anyway. Sooner rather than later, stocks of this book are going to run out. It was a limited edition in the first place, and unless you want to buy it second hand for some nasty price in the future, you can get it for a sort of unreasonable price now.

Well It's worth it!!! :E So I'll order it tonight. Thx for the info :E it was really usefull.

Ok i ordered just a sec. ago. I can't wait to resieve the package :E I payed 34.99 Euro for it.

Damn I need to wait a week longer then usual :( They dont have the book in stock :(. Ow well its worth it :E

Finially my book arived. Damn that took ages. It's really cool. It looks good from the outside and even bettre from the inside. It's really not a waste of money.

Definatley not a wasteof money, although having read it, i continue to wonder - how would it have turned out if Hodgson had remained as the lead author.

All of them are in "Raising the Bar". I would post scans, but no doubt the mods would frown on that.

I do like how the face for Dr. Vance was taken from a bum they found outside their offices though. "What's the matter, Dr. Vance? N-Dimensional mathematics not paying well these days? BWAHAHAHA!"

edit: Oh, and I see people have already posted about the book. And yes, I agree that it is worth it.
