Hi!
I'm having a weird problem with my ping. I got DSL 768/128 and always having a ping of 200 to 300.
So the first thing i did was dl-ing and scanning with ad-aware, spybot and antivir. after that i checked my router for port-forwarding and after that i started steam and checked the config. everything seems to be perfect, at least i thought so....
BUT NOTHING CHANGED!!!!... it is the same again and again...
i always get kicked from servers because of high ping, it is nearly impossible to play with such a ping. now my question:
how can i solve this problem?
ah, and its not my isps fault cause when i dl game content, i got a dl-speed of 300-400 kbps.
can u plz help me solve this problem!

Do you share your internet connection with someone else? It's possible that they're sucking up all the bandwith, it happens to me. Otherwise, all I can think of is making sure that you're not downloading anything, or running anything that requires an internet connection in the background.

I can only recommend that you check the update status of all your Steam games, either via their right-click menus on the Play Games list or the Monitor available from right-clicking the Steam icon on the taskbar.

For some reason, a few users are reporting problems with the Steam content delivery system whereby the game just lags to hell (but not back) if any game is set to "Always keep this game up to date"; oddly, this seems to be the case even if there is no content available (presumably because the program is checking for it continually) or for those with broadband connections- they have a habit of resetting themselves midgame :rolling:

nice try, but i checked that too

i also checked that, cause i'm now alone at home so noone else is online. i also checked that steam doesn't dl anything and i stopped all my other programs inclusively my antivir to scan files-in-use.
this problem seems to be a mysterium.
i also checked if the connection was good, so i dld tfc, ricochet, deathmatch and dedicated server in the time i wrote this and the first post.
i have no idea what is happening to my steam.
ah and i also deleted the ClientRegistry.blob just for fun.
nothing changed....
what am i doing wrong?

EDIT: I'll check that with the content download thing.

didn't work

ok now i set everything to "do not automically update this game", the i restarted my pc, started steam and tried to play,..
the problem doesn't want to go away, what should i do now?

Try checking in the settings of the game (video options), check if it's set to Software, and if it is change it to OpenGL, Software mode tends to lag a lot.

i took a screenshot of my netgraph. maybe u could help me interpreting it.

have you tried setting your internet connection settings in the steam config ? your rates might be very wrong.

EDIT:
try manually setting your rates in the in-game console

rate 20000
cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100

try decreasing it if it makes you choke.. (not litteraly choking)

mess around with the rates :E

ok, this was the default config:
rate 7500
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_updaterate 100

now it is set to
rate 20000
cl_cmdrate 100
cl_updaterate 100
and i also decreased it a bit and a lot, but nothing changes.

hmm what router do you have? on my netgear router the port forwarding is so damn dodgy is doesn't really work - it'll give me pings similiar to yours sometimes - or just not work at all, so I have to play CSS on a different computer with a wired connection.

i can play joint ops, jk3 and sacred without problems and do not have ports forwarded for these games. only for steam i did forward the ports.
i got this router here:
Siemens SE 505 DSL/Cable

Hmmm make sure these ports are forwarded :

1200 for steam
27000-27015
27030-27039

These are all the ports needed to use steam/CSS properly.

Hmmm very odd. I'm really out of ideas, try playign it through a wired connection and see if it's CSS or the router thats at fault.

only downloading at 400kbps on a 768kbps line??

I have a 512/256 line in the uk (nildram) and i get speeds of 469kbps (from adslguide.org speed test), i should think you could get like 600kbps download with that line, and why is your upload so low?? or is it just a package choice?

tbh, the ping situation is MEH!! I got a Draytek Vigor 2600+ router...does the job, i ping like 20-35ms in game, and like 17ms in CMD (when pinging Jolt.co.uk servers)

do a connection test, just google for one, but saying that TCP settings dont effect ping in game i have been told (well not in CS)

someone has recmended rates, so there is nowt else now lol. Complain to the ISP. Another thing to try is to jsut ping the IP of the server your playing on from cmd, to see if its the game, or actually your connection to the servers.

It could also be hardware related, because, thats an awfull lot of choke and loss u got there...i mean a LOT!!! :(

Had the same thing happen to me. Go to Steam > Options > Internet and make sure its set to DSL.

i was having the same problem, but then i read what jade wrote. steam was set to modem, so i set it to dsl and now im sticking around 90ms (shitty hick country dsl)

Problem Solved!

I SOLVED MY PROBLEM! THANK U FOR TRYING TO HELP ME!
i surfed round the net and found a german site where it is explained how to set good netsetting. and i did this and bam! the ping went down.
BTW i disabled port forwarding, but it seems as if my router is ignoring steam.
i now got a ping of 40-80.
for those who r interested: CSConfigs.de Netsettings Tutorial (German)

again thanks to all who tried to help me.

for those who want to know, here are my current netsettings:
cl_cmdrate 50
cl_cmdbackup 8
cl_dlmax 256
cl_updaterate 70
rate 9500
ex_interp 0.035

mod plz close
