Pirate games...

I don't mind pay-per-month things because I'm not financially retarded.

But I will say this.

Blizzard makes roughly four million dollars a day from World of Warcraft subscriptions. Take that however you want.

Much of it is that people don't like to use credit cards.

...wait...what?

There are roughly 8 million subscribers on World of Warcraft. Give or take a few tens of thousands. Each of them pays $15 a month.

(8,000,000 x 15) / 30 = 4,000,000.

I said "roughly" because a) we don't have the exact number of subscribers, and b) I rounded all months to having about 30 days for making the equation easier.

But you said a DAY. You mean a month.

No, he divided it by 30.

8,000,000 subscribers pay 15 dollars per month.

That's $120,000,000 in subscriber fees per month.

Divide that by 30 days, you get $4,000,000 per day.

I wonder what the bandwidth costs are for all the servers?

Like.. 5,000,000$ a day.
Serves them right.

No problem

Also I read your post as "roughly in the vicinity of 4-6 million a day" and literally made the D: face.

lol that would be nuts.

Even figuring that Blizzard has the server costs, a huge electricity / internet bill that just has to be top of the line, customer service reps, (I think their GMs might be paid too?), the actual developers, the bandwidth costs, marketing, and salaries, they're still making a killing.

That's odd. First time i saw this thread yesterday, I knew exactly what it was talking about. Today when I saw the thread, I thought someone was talking about BitTorrent or something.

WoW was the only mmo i have ever had to wait in line to get into a server.
Insane. (back when I played it.. loosely.)

Yep people act like 10 quid is a lot. But to put it into perspective that's 4 drinks in a bar on a single night out, but over an entire month. So 1 pint of beer a week.

I don't know about you sure get far more pleasure out of even a couple of hours gaming in a week (though most weeks it'd be substantially more) than one beer.

I think with 'pay-per-mod' he was referring specifically to the type of business model we got with Oblivion.
Qft CR0M btw.

Correct. Official Oblivion mods you have to pay for that any modder worth his salt could knock up. No thanks.

Episodic content is also a sugar coated money spinner, but to mention that little chestnut on this forum would be like trying to get out of a mine field on a pogo stick. So I didn't. :cheese:

There are two ways that I tend to look at it. Back when I played Diablo 2, there would be weeks where I would just go without playing. The problem was you had to log a certain amount of time onto your characters or they would be deleted to make space. It was one of those things that just had to be done to keep battle.net play free. But it would suck because I played the game pretty religiously for a few years, stopped for a year, and got back in, and guess what, I'd lost all my stuff. At the risk of tooting my own horn, I would wager that I was at one time one of the top 20 richest people on US East.

Anyway, even then I had said "Boy, I'd love if I could pay money to keep my characters alive." And the truth is if not for the deletion, I'd probably still play a ton of Diablo 2. $15 a month is a pretty small price to pay for a game that you can come back to anytime you want without losing anything.

One of the arguments that people tend to come up with is saying that $15 a month really adds up. And it does. It's almost $200 a year. But the way I see it is this. If I'm not playing a game (like this one) that satisfies my games craving, I'm going to find others that do. Maybe that means buying one game a month for $30-60. Maybe it means buying a whole new console $200-500 with games that way too. Maybe it means a computer upgrade $500-1000.

The stuff about people losing their jobs, wives, etc over MMOs are retarded. If people were raised to be responsible it wouldn't be a problem.

ya had enough cash by lvl 41 ...and then I got bored; too much grinding to get something that had litle worth

wtf the mount saves you so much time. my old roommmate used to call the game "world of walking".

I find it incredibly insulting that somebody can assume to tell me that I am financially well off enough to afford a 'mere' 20 a month, just because they can. 20 bucks pays for a quarter of a tank of fuel which gets me to work for 3 days. Or 3 day's food. Or enough gas to heat my house for a week and a half. Or my medical prescription for 2 months. You need to walk outside in the real world, buddy.

I also find it quite disturbing that people are perfectly happy not only to bend over and let marketing schemes such as additional monthly fees and pay-per-mod and in-game advertising shaft them up the arse, but thankfully let them.

Arguing that monthly fees are cheaper and better value for money in the long run than paying out an initial 50 bucks for a single game with unlimited free online multiplayer just means you need to buy a new calculator that works.

Darkside, if you're still living off the backs of your folks, or selling crack to kiddies, or in a well paid career with pension scheme and dental plan, or have inherited lots of cash from a dead relative, then yes, 20 a month is loose change. Well done you.

I don't mean to be insulting. However, I find it insulting that you think I don't live in the "real world." In my real world, I can afford middle class luxuries. In my real world, I have friends who work minimum wage jobs and can afford to throw money around, while living on their own, commuting, and paying for their necessities. And they can still purchase all three next-gen video game systems and spend $100 on a single action figure. That's the world I and my cohorts live in.

Maybe your real world sucks compared to mine. Sorry. Maybe you need a better job.

Yep people act like 10 quid is a lot.

Consider that perhaps to those people... it is :|

Anyhoo, back on subject. I have been following POTBS with interest for a long time, despite the fee thing, but watching the latest video it is looking more and more like a mixed up bunch of genres including Pirates!, Guild Wars, and Age of Pirates. Looks like they have picked out bits from all these games and chucked 'em together. Losing interest fast.

Age of Pirates was dead before it got off the ground thanks to the Insta-deth miracle of Starforce. I played an early cracked version that removed it and it was quite fun, even though it was buggy as hell. The sea battle graphics are pretty much identical to POTBS and stunning when stormy. Until they remove Starforce I won't buy it though, shame, it had potential.

I remember playing the original Microprose Pirates! on Amiga, and that was one of my fave games. For some reason, the new version just doesn't have the same epic feel... maybe because it's too quick and easy to get around the map... and the little minigames like dancing and sneaking into town are a bit tedious.
The cartoon styling and repetetive non-existent language does nothing to improve the game for me, a more realistic approach to graphics with authentic voices would've been great.

Imbriglocated.

Maybe your real world sucks compared to mine.

I apologise, and you're probably right, it does. But is it so much to expect you to consider that there are others who also have a less fortunate real world than yours?

I apologize too. As I said, I wasn't trying to be a dick about it, I was just pointing out that certain recreational activities and luxuries like fast food (and I do consider that a luxury, because it's damn expensive) aren't as good a value as an MMO. Money flits very easily, even if you're the meanest tightwad. You get your check and then your money's gone. But to me, $20 spaced out over 30 days isn't a great deal of money. A little over a buck a day.

And you can always just STOP paying. Sure, some would argue that it's a ripoff because you know have a nonworking game, but that's just the price you pay. If you don't like that idea, don't get the game and get something you can play without additional fees. There are even MMOs like that now, like Guildwars.

Anyway, apologies again if I came off smarmy and/or Mr. Moneybags. I don't try to be. For the record I myself am a Scrooge and I haven't paid for an MMO in years.

Yarr. Ye apology be accepted. (8=X

Guild Wars is indeed free, but I suspect it is one of a dying breed as more and more games jump on the train to fee city.

Now if somebody made a first person pirate multiplayer, then I might be willing to work a little overtime to pay for that. :naughty:

thanx but I was thinking more along the lines of sailable ships and multiplayer crews... maybe Valve will get around to it someday.

Just been back to the Age of Pirates forum after a long while, looks like the game is now in good working order thanks to Supermod - apparently this fixes most of the bugs ingame and adds a lot more features to boot. It also runs without Starforce. \o/

Ironically there is now a stickied link to the Starforce removal tool on the official game forum. Seems somebody is regretting their decision to include it in the game.

I think I will reinstall as soon as I free up some hardspace.

that burning sea game looks interesting
