With all the pixel art going on, notably the current competition. I got to thinking, do the pixel artists among you prefer to use a mouse or a drawing tablet to make your images?

I used to use a tablet, I love those.. I zoom in alot and work with a small pixel canvas when I make pixel art like avvies and stuff.

Damn brother came and took it back, it was his :(

Bah one thing that bothers me, as staff i should be able to immediately see the poll without having to vote first. Removed my vote as it doesn't count and isn't much use and was only there to hack the poll to display for me. Silly VB poll.

Had I a tablet, I'd vote for it. The tablet's obviously the better tool.

Question: Can you only use a tablet for 2d art? Or can you link it up with xsi or whatever and draw spline lines or something with it?

You can use tablets in 3D, a lot do infact.

Reason I did this poll though, is I feel a tablet is more suitible for strokes and more natural effects, while a mouse is more precision pixel by pixel drawing, like pixel art. Was just curious what people used.

Well a tablet is precise as you want it to be really.

You can see the poll results can't you Fenric? There is a little bit opposite "Vote Now" which says "View Poll Results"

meh, i want to be able to see the results instantly, not have to either vote and sway the vote, or click on a link.

But thanks though, i do know how to use a poll. I've done plenty :p

I use the mouse when i pixel (long time ago though).

Never tried a tablet so I cant say if i like it better or not.

I find it easier to draw freehand and then scan it, then you can just trace in illustrator and finish it in photoshop

I did the one in the competition (my first piece of pixel arrrrrt) with my mouse, been thinking about a tablet but i would only use it once a year probably. 4th of October if you were wondering.

Tablets are better for any kind of digital art. They simply offer more precise control.

If any of you are looking for a starter tablet, I would suggest the Wacom Graphire3. You can find it for under $100 and it's definately worth the money if you like to draw.

IMO drawing digital is so much easier than pencil and paper. You never have to worry about making lines too heavy. Your eraser never gets dirty. You can draw in layers. There are so many benefits to it. It does however take a while to get used to having what you draw show up on a screen rather than at the end of your pencil.

Ok some of you are losing the point of the thread here. This thread is about which you prefer for PIXEL ART, as in the old style, low color palette, hand drawn method. Not digital art, not which tablet you prefer or the make of your mouse, not a lesson in what a tablet is. The thread is simply about which you prefer to do PIXEL ART with, a mouse or a tablet.. Bare in mind we're talking game style small animated characters and scenary/tiles, like the way it used to be done, admittedly before some of you were born :p Not full on printed works of art.

ok glad thats cleared up, kthx carry on.

For me, using the mouse is nice because when pixeling usually I need to place pixels in exactly the right spot. With a tablet it seems that would be harder to do, so I just use a mouse. The following was done with a mouse, keyframe by keyframe, along with my avatar (which needs a serious update).

Pencil on the tablet?

I've never used one. How does that work?
