I dont understand why people always seem to be anxious to grab a plane in BF2. What exactly can you do in a plane which is better than in an attack heli with a decent gunner?
With helis you can take over flags by hovering over them, and completly own ground targets, especially tanks/APCs with the TV missiles.
Whilst planes are only good for taking out other planes and helis; otherwise theyre useless for flags or ground targets, unless ur an excellent bomber.
Furthermore once you have dropped some bombs, it will take you an age to strafe the target again, whilst in helis you can quickly turn around and attack again.
Some may say that their speed means that stingers can never hit them; but theyre also so fast that you barely have time to line up for a bombing run, before your about to collide with a hill or hovering helicopter.

Planes are just fun, pure and simple. For me, I just love to fly them.

As you've already said, excellent bombers can take out ground targets, and the air-to-air missiles can take down other planes and helicoptors. Attack choppers can hover over points, yeah, but a plane can stop them from doing that easily.

Also, have you ever tried flying an attack chopper while listening to Danger Zone? It just doesn't work. Only works in planes.

The fighters are shit, but you can take out an entire spawn point in a single pass with the bombers, plus they're safer from sam sites.

I get a plane only to get to the other side of the map.

I can't really fly them too well, but I love harrasing helo's with them. You chase them down and aim at them, so they get the red X, and they start spazzing out thinking they got a missile on their tail and trying to shake it. Then they let lose thier flares and hopefully, you're ready to REALLY get 'em by then.

Planes are great for air cover. They'll keep the helos out of the air if they're good pilots (when I'm in a helo I can usually dodge the missiles a plane tries to fire at me and pilots hardly use their machine gun).

A plane swooping in to bomb a tank that's about to kill you is a welcome sight.

Planes don't need to be able to make a 2nd pass as long as you're good at bombing.

Actually I don't like the planes, cause you have to circle all the time, asnot to get killed by getting out of the battlefield area.

I've been playing the demo with the JSF and the attack copters. However movement is crap with both, mainly because I using a keyboard and mouse. Before buying the full game, I take out money for some sort of sidewinder control with throttle as well as XYZ movement (instead of those shitty XZ movement)

I love the joy of hopping into a fighter and blowing up a Blackhawk with 3-6 occupants. It makes the flight worthwhile. I am having trouble hitting ground targets and bombing. :|

Hahah, silly person, any good pilot can wreak absolute havoc on enemy ground troops worse than any helicopter pilot could. Esepcially if you have one of the bombers, and both pilot and co-pilot are using voice comms, either in-game or third party. Then it's just amazing the damage you can deal to your enemy's armor and vehicles.

And yes, it's very true that jets have a much much longer lifespan than helicopters. I've been with very good chopper pilots, yet we always get taken down either by a smart AA-turret gunner, or any aircraft, or hell, sometimes even smalls arms if we're damage heavily enough. Whereas, in a jet, all you really have to worry about are AA vehicle (poses very little threat actually, but still), other planes, and AA turrets (including the carrier guns). Besides that, nothing can really touch your jet besides the terrain, but if you have enough experience, well, that's not a problem at all.

Hell, I've literally BOMBED moving helicopters on some occasions. Also, to lose a pursuer on Daqing Oil Plants as the Chinese, I flew back towards my landing strip and flew through and empty jet hangar and out the other end, which would be impossible in a chopper, obviously.

Oh yeah, and I don't use a joystick, or my mouse. Pure keyboard here, and I've gone say, 30 kills with 2 deaths on some games with stupid enemy pilots which boosted my score a bit.

Don't underestimate jets, ever. You never know when one might be doing a bombing run on your ass.

yeah i gotta give props to jet pilots. I admit I'm just not good enough to harass anyone yet, but i've been on maps where people kept complaining about this one pilot tearing people up. Not much more memorable than looking up and seeing a bomb headed right for the screen. I really would like to get a screen shot of that.

Good Helo teams can capture flags and kill. Makes them a tad bit better, I think.

Let me put it this way, the best jet pilot in the game is worth much more than the best helo team in the game. A jet pilot can ground all of their air, and destroy all of their vehicles, and continually bomb their bases without any danger of being shot down. A helo can make strafe runs on the enemy base, taking a few of them out, and can shoot down enemy helos. IMO, the just is much more vital, in keeping the enemy down and locked in preventing them from attacking with armor, and taking away tickets.

The biggest threat to the aircraft are other aircraft.

I disagree, I think AA is. If every AA on the map is manned, and the linebacker, the enemy jet doesn't stand a chance. Now you add your jet into the mix, and you have air dominance.

MEC 2 seater I average around 50 kills per round with 1-2 deaths. I do tend to lose a lot of gutless co-pilots who bail out. Thats a 64 player server mind you (full of idiots).

Not when that good jet pilot, or in some cases, pilots, can easily destroy said helicopter while they're capturing an objective, or hell, just flying around even. It's really easy, just get a lock from far-away, and wait for them to deploy chaffe, then light them up. Also, get good with the noseguns, they're the best anti-chopper weapon you'll have up in the air, being as choppers get like 3 sets of chaffe.

Let's take a look at this. A helo team is capturing an objective. A plane spots said team. It takes about 2-3 seconds for that plane to lock on. Once that plane is locked on, he has to maintain it. If there is a good pilot, the helicopter should be off doing evasive maneuvers and chaffe should be in the air. This making it much harder for the pilot who just lost the lock and is flying over it at 900 MPH. Now the plane has to come back and find him. It's easy to hit a pilot hovering at your level, but when you have to dive to kill it, it makes it much, much harder.

In that situation it would have been easy to bomb the helo, and if that fails, ram into him.

Is it possible to land an aircraft without having to eject? I proved that was possible to land with a helo (Granted, a 100m from the inteded land zone)

It's possible, but it takes alot of practice, and most easily down with a VTOL aircraft.

Just make sure you are going slow enough so that your landing gear deploys, you can hear it.

On a side note, next time I get a jet, i've got to put on "Warpigs".

Hehehe.

Oh I see. Why Helo though? I usually call em Heli's.

HALO High Altitude Low Opening (parachuting)

Sounds cooler...heli is sissy.

Heli sounds wierd, and it doesn't roll off the tongue like helo does. Hell eeee
Or he low
I chose he low

Planes are essential.
Helos are an incredible extra.
Why, the most important thing airpower has to do is preventing the enemy at using airpower against your team, after that comes ground support and capturing flags. Helo's are very good ,you can capture flags quickly, give great cover, but they are not going to stop that bomber from wrecking havok on your ground units. Oh and if you're a good pilot shooting helo's isn;t that hard. And if you can't get them you can make them use evasive manouvers, so that they are not supporting their squad and can even be taken down by ground fire.

Anyway, I disagree with foxtrot on whats the most dangerous to bombers, fact is it's very difficult to shoot a plane with an aa, but it's very easy for the pilot to get you with bombs. Plus manning all the turrets in a map, takes up a lot of valuable men, while 1 fighter can easly kill a bomber. A fighter is by far a bombers worst enemy.

cause people say "helo" then "goodbye" when there are teams, you just cant have the same effect by yourself.

actually idk why they call them the helo teams, unless i am correct...

When all the AA on a map is manned, if you go to bomb one of them you have 3 others and the enemy jet after you, that is a lot of missles to dodge. And the man power "wasted" on keeping air control is more than made up for their loss of air.

No. due all those people could have been used in an assult, 1 figher can do the job better than all those aa's put together. taking soemoen down with an aa incredibly hard, hwne he's going right to you, you better not shoot cause the missles will most likly miss, when he is going near you, you will likly miss cause the missles can't turn fast enough, only good point to shoot is hwne he is going straight away fro myou, but when he flows over you you need to get a lock on again, and by that time, he's long gone, but 1 fighter can easly outmanouver and kill you with it's six missles.

In your case you use like 6 men to down one man, whne one is enough, and thats 5 men more than mine, and those 5 men make all the differance on the ground.

It isn't six to take down one guy, you can also take down their helos. So that means the enemy team will be out their bomber and helos. Five extra guys can't do anything on the ground with a bomber in the air that has nothing to worry about. So now when they are about to take over a base, you can send in your bomber or helo.

There are gears? :rolling:

It will go down on its own when you get going slow enough. Notice how the jets have the landing gear deployed when they are on the runway, but not when they are in the air :P

Never noticed that. Used to manually putting them up and down in flight sims.
