Woah, did you guys play this thing? Brilliant game. I can't remember the last time i picked up something made pre-2002 that I hadn't played before previously, put it in my dvd drive, started it up and gotton lost in a beautiful, beautiful game. Planescape: Torment is the shiz.

So, did you guys play it or what?

I love Planescape, and lost more than a few months to it at release. The atmosphere and quality of writing haven't been matched in a video game before or since - certainly one of the best rpgs ever made.

It's a shame this game didn't sell all that wel. It's wonderfull, and I bet a lot of people would enjoy. So if you like it and want others to play it, encourage as many people as you can to play it, I have allready gotten 6 of my friends to buy it, and thats a start, cause this game should not be forgotten.

I always recommend Planescape whenever someone mentions RPG's to be played. It's got one of the finest stories ever written for a game, one that really makes you think deeply on a philosophical level about life. I also love how it has SO much flexibility regarding what type of character you want to play, maybe even rivalling Fallout, ie. when a character asks something of you, you might be able to:
1) tell them to get stuffed
2) tell them *politely* to get stuffed
3) ask them how much they'll pay you
4) say 'I'll do it'
5) Make vow: 'I'll do it'
6) lie 'I'll do it'

Every one of those responses affects the type of character you end up with, (ie good/bad, lawful/chaotic) and if you make a vow and break it it'll have repercussions on that as well.

I played it through a few times but it's best the first time - even though I missed about half the plot since I decided not to dabble with being a mage at all. You MUST be a mage (at least at points) to get the most from the plot...

Edit: just a few points to add for Jintor, since you've just started: charisma, intelligence and wisdom are maybe the most important stats in the game, story wise. level those up well (although Charisma less so, since it doesn't need to be quite so high, and there are a quite a few events that will give you a charisma point), or buy the more powerful tattoos...there'll be stuff about the nameless one's past that certain NPCs will know about, but that you wont be able to unlock until you do stuff that requires a certain Intelligence level. I dunno if you've got Dak'kon in your party yet, but he's like that. It might be Wisdom actually, I forget...

also, keep checking back at Fell's tattoo shop every now and again cos he makes different tattoos for you based on what you've done. ALSO, get to the point where you know what fell's saying by yourself, but get everyone to translate for you anyway...sometimes that in itself unlocks little bits of story! but anyway, enjoy

Planescape ?
Would someone bother and tell what this is ?

It's not surprising it almost rivals Fallout, considernig it's done by the same guys who did Fallout(2) iirc!

never heard of it can anyone direct me to the games website :S

Seriously cool game.

The floaty-talky-skull-thingy is the best sidekick ever!

What was his name? I'm thinking..........Mort?

There is also this super-hard-to-get NPC dude that you can get to join your party that is voiced by the guy who does Homer Simpson. Not sure how to get him though, I certainly never met up with him. Apparently unless you have a walkthrough or guide he is just impossible to find.

Without a doubt one of the best games ever right along with Baldur's Gate II. Absolutely amazing story and the interface allowed for so much creative gameplay that even a handful of play-throughs will not get you everything. An incredible creation.

Yeah, Morte was awesome. Perfect sidekick to TNO, and lot of depth to his past too...

The NPC you're talking about is Nordom. Not sure if this is really a spoiler but:
You get given, or you can buy a Modron cube toy figure at one point. Fiddle with it until it turns into a portal, and Nordom is in the maze somewhere when it's set to hard. And when set to Hard, that maze really is Hard...

Another easy-to-miss NPC is Vhailor. At one point in the game you'll see a portal to exit the level you're on (Curst prison, since this is a spoiler). There'll be some map to explore behind the portal and Vhailor is there. He's easy to miss because it's tempting just to click on the portal and get out, and once through, you can't go back.

Nordom is a killer NPC with some great dialogue. Fights with 2 crossbows so he's cool and pretty tough. Three cheers for Dan Castellaneta! I didn't like Vhailor, however. He turns on me more often than not. My favourite NPCs were Dak'kon and Morte. Although Anna rules too...

Would someone bother and tell what this is ?

Planescape: Torment is a computer role-playing game (CRPG) which takes place in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Planescape campaign setting, released in 1999. It was developed by Black Isle Studios (closed in late 2004), with its design team being lead by Chris Avellone (now of Obsidian Entertainment).

In the game, players assume control of an enigmatic and heavily scarred immortal with pallid gray skin, who wakes up in a mortuary, with no memory of his identity and past experiences. He shortly meets a floating, talking skull named Morte, who follows him from that point onwards. Planescape: Torment differs from similar CRPGs like those in the Baldur's Gate series by placing an emphasis on conversation and storyline, as opposed to an emphasis on combat. Furthermore, unlike many RPGs, Planescape: Torment has a much darker and gothic tone and style, as its name suggests. This decision, coupled with unattractive box art and inadequate marketing strategies, arguably led the game to have sales lower than expected. Planescape: Torment has since become a cult classic. The game's main themes include guilt, redemption, regret, the significance of reality perception and the importance of knowing oneself.

Okies, guys, i've got a problem.

I was doing what I normally do in the Clerk' Ward, Sigil: Shoplifting. A little thieving here, a little thieving there, a little taking of this - all good if you don't get caught.

I got caught.

I got caught in the apocothery, in the Clerk's Ward, trying to steal a Heart Charm. So naturally, I ran away. Slaughtered the 3 or so guards sent after me and took to my heels. Didn't think more of it for a while.

Until I got a quest that sent me back to the Apocothery. OK, says I. The Harmonium will surely have forgotton by now, thinks I. Big mistake. I get back to the Clerk's Ward, every Harmonium officer and their dog is chasing me. So naturally I dash straight to the Apocothery.

Everybody inside, including the guy i need to talk to, is hostile, and Harmonium officers are spawning out of the doors 5 at a time every half minute. There's no space to fight, no space to run. I can't even cast pacify on one person, let alone the 30 or so hostiles inside that tiny space.

How can I get the harmonium off my ass? Dying doesn't do it, they just keep trying to do you in. I need that bottle!

Damn, not sure what to do there... I always played a goody two shoes, even when I was being relatively evil. In any other game than Planescape, you'd be in a situation right now where the game is basically going all out to kill you so you'd have to reload, but since you're immortal...

How's your sneaking? Maybe you can make it to whoever you have to talk to without attracting attention. Is there an invisibility spell in Planescape? I forget...

edit -hmm, just realised that you'd have to break sneak or invisibility to be able to cast pacify on that guy (if it would even work....). But maybe it could buy you just enough time...?

ellipses... ftw...

Well... I'm pretty sure you break sneak when you enter a new zone. And, when you enter a zone, you bring your whole party, and only Annah has sneak in my party. There's about 30 Harmonum right at the front door.

:(

I just bought and beat the game...wow...just wow...most original setting ever in a game. But I need Planescape: Torment 2: Morte's Revenge, and I need it now!

[SPOILERS]We so need a sequel where Morte and Dak'kon and the rest blast their way into Hades and bail the Nameless One. Also I found it rather amusing that in the end Dak'kon pussied out (just slightly) about the whole Two Deaths as One thing. He did die for you though... [/SPOILERS]

Anyone know where I could download some codes or something for the game? I desperately love Planescape, but I've never been able to beat it.

Someone tell me where to find this game. I'd love a new RPG to try out, I haven't really played a PC RPG since BG2...

Picked mine up off Amazon. Simple as that.

Deus, I'm afraid there's little to no cheats in the game. I stumbled across an infinite experience bug with Hamrys the Coffinmaker, but that's it.

While we're asking for help though, I have a question. I know you can 'upgrade' your fellow party members in dialogue after certain events. I got Nordom, but I can't figure out how to upgrade him.

Eventually I said screw it and continued with the game, but I would like to figure out how to pimp him. I'm using a gamefaqs walkthrough, which is very thorough. However, the dialogue options concerning Nordom's upgrading simply don't present themselves like the walkthrough claims.

Any advise from anyone who found Nordom. (He is a bitch to locate in the first place).

EDIT: And do know I have inhuman wisdom and IQ.

As Thunder said, Amazon's best your best bet. That's where I got mine. You likely won't find it at any stores. Same goes for any Interplay/Black Isle games. I've got a pretty good collection going on already. Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, and Planescape. I've been thinking about pumping a few dollars out for Lionheart, but I hear the first half's the only good part and the game is too focused on combat. Tis a shame they never made Torn. The game looked very awesome.

This game is why I'm excited about Neverwinter Nights 2. Dak'kon and Morte are the best NPCs ever. Ever. EVER.

Chris Avellone, the lead designer for Torment, is working on writing up all the party members for NWN2. For some reason, NWN2 is suddenly my most anticipated game (awesome toolset notwithstanding).

Morte wins at life for being so damn funny and being a frikkin floating skull.

Dak'kon wins at life for being quietly the most badass guy (or gith) in the room.

Annah wins at life for being a hot demon babe with a ridiculous Irish accent.

Fall-From-Grace wins at life for making Inara from Firefly look like the Thai hooker from Full Metal Jacket.

Nordom wins at life for having a TV with a face on it for a head, and being voiced by the same man who plays Homer Simpson.

Ignus wins at life for being the most blatantly badass man in the room, and being a restaurant mascot.

Vhaillor wins at life for being a suit of walking armor.

Any berk who disagrees should pike off and get Mazed.

Damn Berks.

Nodrom is damn hard to find. It took me a real-life week of gaming (not a continuous week) to find him, and I had to draw a map of the Modron Maze in order to do it. The only information I've got is that the room he's in is only enterable from... the right? This means you have to go left to go into his room.

I'm not sure how you upgrade him. It is stat-dependant...

Keep hearing about this game... I'm into a good plot, but is the combat any good? I couldn't get into Baldur's Gate cause of the combat system even though it seemed like a fine game besides that.

Well, I like it. Especially walking into a room and unloading every single magic missile memorised. Makes a nice blast.

You've got the right idea Jintor. You can only reach Nordom's room by going through the top-left door.

Make a map. Seriously it helps.

Also, the Modron Maze on Hard is one of the toughest fights in the game. Little bug I've noticed: When you enter a new room, hit pause immediately (SPACE for my computer). There's a few moments delay before the robots notice you, and you have to pause the game before they do. Then click on whatever door you want to go through. Unpause the game, and you're immediately teleported to the next room.

Rinse and repeat, and draw a map or you WILL get lost.

@Bad^Hat, combat system is very similar to Baldur's Gate, but again, combat is not the focus of the game. The brilliant setting and dialogue are the main points. Wisdom is the most important stat, followed closely by Intelligence. I remember the conversations I've had with people much more than the rather unspectacular combat. Note that I play as a fighter, and I pack a pair of kickass katars.

I prefered beating the shit out of every robot and resting. Normally, what this would entail would be walking into the room, unloading almost every spell i had memorised on the robot, and walking out again, back to the 'rest' area. And then doing it again. And again.

Flashy fun though. :p

This isn't necromancy, because I have a legitimate question.

I am in Curst Prison, having just freed Trias. I'm chatting with everyone's favorite walking suit of armor, Vhaillor, and I've noticed that I need a Charisma of 21 to make him commit suicide.

Is this true, or is there some other way? The walkthrough mentions that I can get 90,000 XP by compelling him to suicide, and I really want those points.

Is there some way to jump my Charisma by just one? A hack perhaps? Deus Ex Machina, you mentioned you found some cheats, any suggestions?

That link I posted months ago gives you a hack of a book that can increase your stats (among other things). Try that.

Looks like I need to start over for the hack to work, and while I appreciate your suggestion, there is no way in hell that I'm starting this game over.

It's been a long time since I've used Infinity Explorer (a kind of hacking utility to poke around inside the Planescape engine) but iirc you can use it to give yourself certain items (...? could be wrong). There should be something you can download to edit save games with anyway (I know there was tons you could do with Baldur's Gate on the same engine).

Anyway, if you can find a way to give yourself items with a save game editor, there's a couple of tattoos you can get that boost charisma.

There's actually tons of places in the game you can boost charisma, but they're all in Sigil (I think), so you either got them all but your starting charisma was a bit low, or you missed 1 or 2.

PS I love this game

Edit: Does your walkthrough say you can convince Vhailor to kill himself at any time (ie. after you've travelled with him for a while)? If so just take him with you. This is a bit of a spoiler for you but I guess you're using a walkthrough anyhow: *spoiler*you end up back in Sigil at one point later*spoiler*. When you're there, buy a charisma tattoo or 2 (isn't there also a spell or consumable you can use?) and try again. I don't know if the walkthrough mentioned but you should keep checking back with Fell, since he will make more tattoos for you based upon the stuff you've accomplished. If for example you sweet-talked Ravel you'll have a special +2 charisma tattoo available to buy.
BTW to my shame I never knew you could convince Vhailor to kill himself  Great game.

Edit2:
Found some links to savegame editors -
http://www.bootstrike.com/Torment/hints.html
Scroll down to the bottom, there are 3 progs there that you can use to give yourself items and stat boosts if you can't wait until you get back to Sigil. Tattoo of the Black Barbs is the name of the +2 charisma tattoo, I think. You know you want to stick to item hacking only since stat-hacking is more evil ;)

Holy Thread Revival Batman! :O

Oh, Valior. I just left him behind, because he was a total bastard. :(

Yeah, he would always beat the shit out of me at the slightest provocation. I preferred Ignus as the party psycho.

I can't remember exactly what I did... oh, yeah, I got that Nimrod guy - the dude with the dual or quadruple crossbows - instead.

He was pretty cool.
