Hey hey gang.

So Im heading home from abroad on tuesday to graduate (thank you, thank you) and am heading back abroad the day after (friday).

Theres basically ***k all to do out here as the satellite TV is rubbish (90% of all channels are in Arabic which I dont understand).

So I want to bring my PS3 back with me, as its currently in my room in the UK, and Im sat abroad. I also have a portable TV coming too, which has an AV In/Out cable so I can use my PS3 when on the move or if there isnt a big TV around. And I have 2 room-mates so Im not going to steal the main TV the whole time.

I was wondering a few things:

FYI Im flying with Emirates

1 - Should I take it on as hand luggage wrapped up in something and put in a backpack? I know it has to be taken out for scanning by security like a laptop. If so, any recommendations? Likely to run into any problems?

2 - My portable TV has its own carrier bag (TV is 11 inch screen which I find is actually very playable) so its not that big of a bag, and I cant remember the hand luggage rules; can I take the bag on as well as my rucksack?
If memory serves, you can take a bag (rucksack or carrier luggage) AND a laptop bag with you on flights.

Im more worried about how to pack the PS3 and TV. Should the PS3 go in the suitcase and take the TV as hand luggage? PS3 as hand luggage and pack the TV? Take both on as hand luggage?

Weight will not be an issue. Theres a 30kg limit and Im only going and coming back with about 7 or 8kg, 10 at a push.

In just dont want to turn up in my room and see that either my PS3 has been smashed in some way or theres a newly formed crack on my almost-as-expensive TV.

Help me HL2.net. Youre my only hope. Okay so now I click file, save as...

Sounds kinda extreme. If it's only one day couldn't you just bring a book or two? Should be less hassle.

Yeah... Read a book. Or sit at the bar. With a book or magazine.

Get a PSP or Nintendo DS.

They're called handheld game consoles for a reason.

re: Dubai Airport

Go shopping. That airport has one of the best tax free shopping centers in the world.

I know, Ive been there many a time.

Okay so ignore the using the PS3 in the airport line lol.

And this isnt a case of taking my PS3 with me.

My PS3 is back in the UK, and Im going home to the UK from abroad for all of, what, 2 days, and want to bring the PS3 BACK with me abroad, as Im station here for 6 months.

Personally i'd bring the PS3 as hand luggage. The portable TV is small and you can easily wrap in in your clothes and it will be well protected. Suitcases tend to get bashed around and last time i flew with Emirates my suitcase got crushed.

go to the desert whit the camels, carefull to not get kinnaped

or you can give money to the inmigrant workers to fight each other for it

Remember, no PlayStations.

Wrap it in bubblewrap etc, put it in a box, put that in your suitcase.

Personally I wouldn't put any of it in your suitcase. You run the risk of damage in transit, but there's also the slim possibility of theft by handlers, depending on what the airport's like (Dublin airport, for example, is meant to be very dodgy and who knows what Dubai's like).

Fit the PS3 in a rucksack if you can and bring the TV as a personal item in its own case. If the TV is truly about the size of a laptop while in its case then there should be no problem with that, although security miiiight cause a stink because it's not actually a lappy. It might be worth contacting the airline to see if it qualifies as a personal item, but I can't see why it wouldn't. As long as it's not oversized they've got nothing to gain by screwing with you. When all's said and done you can usually check hand items into the hold upon boarding, so you could request to do that with the rucksack and pick it up straight outside the plane, so very little handler involvement. You'd have to put your snacks in the TV bag though. Anyway, whichever way they tell to do it, I'm sure you could get them both on as hand luggage.

Wrap it in bubblewrap etc, put it in a box, put that in the mail.

fixed!

he should send the damn thing and pick it up where hes going to be staying. don't trust airport security, they get paid just a little bit more than the janitorial staff. my friends work at the airport and they talk about stolen stuff all day to me

Well Im planning on putting the PS3 into my rucksack, mainly for my own peace of mind. I'll wrap it in some clothing or towel or bubblewrap, whatever I can find at home in the UK.

The TV is small enough to fit in the second compartment of my laptop bag, so I guess I could put the TV and Laptop into the laptop bag, PS3 in my rucksack and then chuck all the cables etc into the suitcase.

Ive just called my rent, and he said that he always gets away having hand luggage as well as a laptop bag...but then he's a gold card member with Emirates...and he cant remember what economy rules are as he ''hasnt been that far back in the plane for a good couple of years''...the ***tard.

You're definitely allowed the laptop bag as a personal item. My laptop case is huge and I bring it on in addition to a rucksack all the time without ever even having to check one into the hold. The only way I envisaged a problem was if it wasn't actually a laptop bag, but just a second large case full of miscellaneous stuff, which the airline might not like. However, if you've got a rucksack and a laptop bag, and you can slip the TV into that, then I think you're all sorted.

Don't put the console in a check baggage, we sometimes throw bags onto beltloaders, which means ps3=broke.

Its an official Dell laptop bag that I long-term borrowed from my dad as he doesnt need it anymore, so its unmistakably a laptop bag.

Ive never tried getting both on a plane before, and I leave the day after tomorrow so I was flapping about how to pack. As the excess baggage prices are insane.

Thanks for the peace of mind.
