As some might already know, the SDK for HL2 is comming out this month. The SDK includes the source code nessesary to modify the game itself. It includes the source for rendering, all the way to what each monsters name is, and what that monster can do, including how to kill that monster. It also includes the source code for the weapons. Basicaly, any mod team that downloads the SDK to get a jump start on modding, will know practicaly everything about HL2, besides the actual story and levels of the game, and a few other things.

I just would like to ask these mod teams to not disclose any information about what they find out from the SDK besides information on technology like graphics and physics. I enjoy browsing these forums, but stumbling upon a post including a list of every monsters name, abilties, and weaknesses would practicaly ruin the whole experience for me. For those of you who are not modders, please dont download the SDK just because it's for HL2 and you just have to get your hands on anything even remotely related to HL2. I can imagine a noob who doesnt write programs posting questions on forums like this: "I downloaded the SDK and I seen a comment in the last boss code, '// To kill megaboss, let the player pull the 3rd lever first in section D' Which file contains the source code for the 3rd lever??? Please help me!" Not only did someone like that only download the SDK becuase he wants anything remotely related to HL2, but he's asking questions about something he will never touch, and ruining the game for anyone who would stumble upon his post.

Seeing something simliar to this in one way or another posted all over would generaly get me very agitated, and I would avoid any further contact from these or any other forums like the plauge. (Yeah I know it's a bit presumptous to assume this will happen, but its just an example, and I might as well mention the chance of this BEFORE it happens.)

I'm fairly certain that we'll be enforcing a no-spoilers rule. Breaking it will result in a ban.

However, I don't think the SDK will come with everything... that would be a huge mistake on Valve's part.

How do you know the SDK is coming out this month?

Anyway, I hope it lets you make levels so you can see the physics and such.

Even if it doesnt come with everything, the information should still be left for the mod teams to know, and for the rest to wait for. Atleast it would require some common sense as what is sensible to talk about in the forums, and what would flat out be a spoiler. But the problem is that noobs who don't even know what an SDK is, will post about what they seen in it, and although perhaps inadvertantly, would post something that would spoil the game for the 300+ people who view such a post.

Agree with you Adam. Zeus: I dont know if hammer is in the SDK they'r releasing now but you can't play the maps you do before the game is released so no you cant test the physics.

I'm almost positive Gabe said so, and that I even seen the date posted in mags and sites. But anyways, the date does not matter, the point of the post still holds its ground.

Also, even if the SDK comes with Hammer, you can not test the physics, since the SDK does not come with the executable engine to test your maps in.

I wouldnt worry to much... I'm sure Valve will stop to think before releaseing it and remove any references that could compromise the game. Considering we dont know much of HL2 singleplayer, they know what they are doing :)

I hope they don't release that much also, but just in case, im glad I got this posted ahead of time. Better to be safe than sorry. Perhaps an e-mail to Gabe questioning this matter would suffice.

I have zero moding skills but im getting the sdk to mess with just like I did with the half-life one wich just manages to make me want to kick my tower

If it does infact come out this month where would I be able to get my hands on it
EDIT: Yes I know it's a stupid question. But I'm just a mapper and wouldn't mind testing out the new map tools for HL2

besides, all of the modders will flood the coding forum so just don't go there for spoilerz!

Excellent, you have solved my fears.

Adam, I share the same view. I don't visit any boards for a game if it has been released and I don't have it yet. The surprise must not be ruined!

Hum.....Valve only has a couple of weeks until the end of the month, hopefull they'll make the date.....whatever it happens to be....

I'll probably download the SDK too, not because I know shit about c++, but because I wanna see some other cool stuff about it.
These kind of stuff doesnt spoil anything for me, so I got no problem with it.

i believe gabe has said the sdk will not include game content at this point.

Wny not just limit SDK talk to a single forum. Any leaks out side that forum can be removed. Repeated incidents = ban.

I wouldnt mind knowing about the engine before i got the game. I dont really care about spoilers either but i wouldnt spoil it for anyone else.
