please help (letter from my mom)

Parents have so many delusions regarding MP3's it's not even funny. The worst two offenses are:

1. Deleting MP3s can prevent you from being sued and having MP3's on your hardrive is illegal. Obviously this is not true at all. If you don't want the RIAA to see your MP3 collection, just copy it to a non-shared directory.

2. Downloading MP3's is illegal. While I'm not 100% sure what the law is, but so far the RIAA only went after people who distribute MP3's, not the ones who download them. Besides it would be nearly impossible for the RIAA to track who is downloading MP3's while it's very easy to see who's sharing them.

I got one mole of MP3. How about that nw909? (joke)

I'm not sure that money goes to the artists. And it's hard for me to be sad because guys like Metallica make less money...

You know they can't bring you down for downloading bach or any other of the old classical masters. That would be illegal. They can't bust you for anything that hasn't been copyrighted. For example, I can download every single Twilight Zone episode and the MPAA (or whoever controlls tv stuff) can't do a damn thing about it.

:)Wouldn't put it past them... Suing 12 year olds and such like for disgraceful amounts of money, I really have to wonder what the extent of their greed is and even if it has any kind of limit whatsoever. I know the record industry's had it tough of late, but still...

Wraith: Delete all the music and then fill it up with another form of copyrighted material that no-one seems to mind people downloading: Pornography.
Download the equivalent in size to the mp3's you own in pornography.
Let's say... 1Gb music (300 songs-ish?) = 1Gb Porn. That's a LOT of pictures, and quite a few movies too.
But then of course she'll probably cancel your i'net anyway, but at least she can't say you're going to jail.
And you're 100% right: Beethoven=Great, Nickelback=C*ckmonkey

That's such a 'Mom Letter'. Looks like a list she saw on Oprah or something.

My reccomendation:
If you definitely want to keep sharing, keep your MP3s well organized and change your share directory often (only share small bits at a time).

Just chuck em in a hidden, unshared folder somewhere safe and don't worry bout a ting laddy. Damn bush your avatar is makin me all irish >.<

thanks guys, my mom is crazy, she is still asking if i deleted my hardware. damn, i tried to explain this all to her but she started yelling about how if i dont get rid of all my MP3s RIGHT NOW the government is going to come and kill everyone. well maybe i exaggerated a bit on the last part of that, damn im so sad about this delay, im tired too. HARRR

www.b0g.org is fun

ok im going to sleep now while i still have an ounce of sanity left, i think ill listen to mozart and tool MP3s until i fall asleep :-D

just ask her for the money to buy a few new cds and delete the music. if you dont use it that much then its no loss right?

This stuff gets wierd you know ... paradoxical ...

1) Say you write a piece of music, an MP3, clearly you own copyright.
2) Generate file "X" (for those that know computers this is a bitwise XOR operation) of your song vs. say a Beetles track.

With just these two files (your song and "X") anyone could easily reconstruct the Beetles track (just combine with XOR again). Now the question is as follows :

3) Who owns copyright on file "X" ?

You may think the Beetles do, because it can be used to create their track. But you are WRONG!! Why? because do the same in reverse (ie. pretent the Beetles track was yours, and your song was the beetles) and you end up with the same identical file "X". That is, people can use the same file "X" to create your track from the Beetles track.

Clearly both you and the Beetles cannot both own the copyright on file "X", because if you did you could distribute each other's music without breaching copyright. So who does? you can't grant copyright to one party because both have an equal claim.

You see?? weird!

Did you guys hear the latest? Kazaa SUES the RIAA for using Kazaa Lite to connect to the P2P network! Looks like the tables have turned! I hope Kazaa wins hehe : )

Well you can start by explaining to her that you can't really "delete" your hardware.. Not to my knowledge anyway.

There are allot of worse things you can do then download a couple of mp3's.. Don't really think they would bother with "small timers" like you, no offense ;).

Right on!

*mrBadger grabs his bass and plays

"F*ck you I won't do what you tell me! F*ck you I won't do what you tell me! F*ck you I won't do what you tell me! F*ck you I won't do what you tell me! F*ck you I won't do what you tell me! .... F*CK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!". .... repeat until fade.

Anyway. I'm sorry whoever said something about downloading Classical music, but I think classical music is among the most rousing music in the world, and the only band that comes close to evoking that kind of feeling is Rage Against the Machine. It's so diverse as a genre.... ah well.... :p
