Hi guys, I'm really into Half Life, but there's just a few things that I don't quite understand and I thought you gurus could help me out a bit.

1) Have I got this right: At the end Of HL2, Gordon destroys the teleport to the combine world atop the citadel to stop breen getting away, or to stop combine coming through, OR to destroy the supression field, which of those is right?

2) In Episode 1, Why is the citadel in critical danger if only the top is destroyed? Why does the whole structure come down? Why was it going to make a massive bang?

4) What exactly does deactivating the citadels core do? (if it's not deactivated please tell me what Gordon and Alyx did to it:)

3) last of all, is the 'Signal' That goes out like a self defense system on the citadel to warn the combine homeworld it has been destroyed? I never knew quite what was going on during that spectacular lights show...

Thanks for reading

1. Both to stop Breen and to disable the tunneling entanglement device.

2. When you destroyed the Dark Fusion reactor you created a tear in space above the Citadel; unleashing a cascade of volatile energy (doesn't that sound so good?) that sent the Core into a meltdown.

3. Alyx and Gordon attempted to contain the unstable energy, which is what the arm things do.

4. Sending out an impractical distress call – they are cut off from the rest of the Combine empire, and thus needed to send out a transmission. "Bad shit is going down on Earth, please advise."

thanks for that info :)

And yes I can count I just remembered that one after i had done 1-3 >.<

I take it the Tunneling Entaglement Device is the supression field?

No, it is the device in which the Combine use to travel from thier universe to ours. Destroying that created the comm and teleport blackout, which is the reason they had to implode their own Citadel.

No, the TED is what allows the combine to send forces to Earth.

*EDIT You know what Samon? **** you.

Ah, sorry, I get it now, and that's what Breen was using to escape?

Breen was using the teleporter. I don't think the teleport itself was the TED; simply built into the TED reactor. Or something.

lolRimmer.

Yeah the teleporter probably uses part of the TED, but the "true" TED is most likely used to bring in Striders and Gunships 'n shit en masse, not one at a time.

And I still hate you.

It's the same teleport; I don't believe there's another one anywhere. It's most likely been 'built upon' by Breen, I should imagine – Alyx does always call it “Dr. Breen's reactor”. The large 'tear' that it creates is most likely how things are delivered. Though, I doubt they actually can deliver their army en masse at all really. They suck at teleportation, and any reinforcements would take a while to get through.

I think that's probably the idea behind the Citadel and its constant production of Synths; they don't need to bring in things en masse – the Citadel builds them.

Well, 5-star service from the staff at HL2.net, well done xD

So if the citadel blows in Ep1, how do the combine get through if that was the only portal?

That's not exactly what I meant, and I do too believe that most if not all synths are being constructed inside the citadel. What I meant is Breen's teleport might be an extension on the TED, which I assume would probably just open up like hundreds of portals to the combine homeworld, and probably is also the way the combine "delivered" the citadel to Earth to begin with. I just proposed that the two systems might be linked, not that Breen's teleport is a smaller version of the TED.

Vectyr: That's kinda the point. For the moment, they can't. Which means good news for the good guys!

Well, there's more than one Citadel but they are all inactive. That's the reason there's a Super Portal in EP2!

The Combine converted the tear Gordon created into a portal using the energy release of the Core...

Ah, and we're not really supposed to know that until we find out in episode 2 right? or do we know they did that in Ep1

Thats from Ep2...Episode 1 doesnt have time for you to figure that out...

You can kinda see the super portal at the very last moments of Episode One. That ripple effect appears at the top of the Citadel, that big white "flash ball", and the circle-thing (just like the one at the end of the main game with the gunships flying through to stop Gordon) turns bright white.

Though it'll look much nicer in Episode Two. :)

AS for the suppression field deactivating, Dr. Kleiner himself says it was an unintended side-effect, sort of a bonus, I'd say.

So thanks to the super portal the combine will bring in more forces than ever?

Or are they still stranded?

The Super Portal was created to channel in the superior forces, yes. It's still developing though.

so if a portal has been opened, presumably linking earth to the combine universe, what possible use would the knowledge of the combine world's location be to the resistance?

curious.

Wow, this is all so facinating. *drool* I love this place...

The idea that they could effectively stop them teleporting to Earth? If they have the coordinates they could probably create a kind of 'block' with that satellite in orbit or something.

Maybe they could just lay a few tripmines at the portal entrance? that's bound to stop 'em!

The first step is admitting you need help:P

1. He destroys the portal but it is more to close the entryway than that reason

2. The portal is devouring the citadel so it causes widespread damage.

3. that was the signal going out

4. Tried to contain it so it would not send the signal through

4. Tried to contain it so it would not send the signal through

actually no, they were originally trying to stabilize it so they could have enough time to EVAC C17. You just found about the signal after you got to the core.

More for both reasons, I tend to look at the larger picture to see purpose
