How's it going, I realize this is probably not the proper section for help related issues so if it is not I apologize.

Now Ive looked for an answer and even tried calling valve but they were of no help. My half-life 2 was registered on a now defunct computer that I cannot access and the game wont allow me to install on a second computer(my new computer). Can anyone help or give suggestions?

All you need to play your game again (assuming you registered your copy of HL2) is your Steam account.

Your Steam account is what contains the game, not your defunct PC. You require a username / email address and password. Obviously if you have access to the original email address you can reset the password.

Once you log back in with your account you can download the game for free through Steam again.

If you've lost the email account - you've got a lot of things you need to do to prove you purchased your copy of HL2 to Steam support. (which will take some time).

Yeah I just realized(im a bit of a noob when it comes to pc gaming) that. Now the issue is I wasn't the purchaser of the copy I purchased it off my ex roommate(hense the defunct computer bit). I have the physical copy of the game and I do have a steam account of my own but I'm assuming they don't much like people who buy their games second hand. Im assuming Im prob. screwed. hah

Yeahhhhhh, you're pretty screwed. Steam games are irrevocably tied to one account, so you got gypped for buying it second hand. If you've got the cash, Orange Box is a pretty good (and cheap!) deal.

$30 isnt cheap for an old game. Especially one that you already own and when you pay to have your property controlled by a 3rd party company. Honestly this is pretty disheartening and I doubt they will ever make a dime off of me. I cant support such fascist styles of doing business.

Thank you for your help! If I ever find a way to make this copy work I will return and gladly become part of this community. Ive always been a big fan of the Half-life series.

Ahem, that's $30 for five games. Your loss, though.

FIVE GAMES.
THAT WAS A GREAT DEAL WHEN IT WAS $50.

You even get Peggle Extreme.

Shit, that was my second greatest trade of commodities.

The first was when I traded my copy of Final Fantasy: Advent Children for a slice of pizza.
I ripped that guy off good.

Well if you played the game (at least once) you probably used your ex-roommate's Steam account. If you used that, you must have changed the contact email to your own considering the account changed hands (this isn't allowed by Valve really...but it happens).

So it's a case of remembering that email. That's it.

The orange box includes HL2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2 (and free games HL2DM and Lost Coast). All games are highly regarded which is why Fishbulb offered the alternative. Half-life 2 alone is $19.99 (1 game only though).

Also, don't talk rubbish if you don't understand how it works. The problem here was you losing your details. Valve (makers of HL2) own Steam completely - no third company. Fascist style? Steam is the largest and most successful digital distribution network for gaming in the world, in the changing face of PC gaming. Time to catch up with the other gamers and work out why Steam has 25 million accounts, over 1,000 games from over 100 developers, an increase of 205% unit sales in 2009 & five consecutive years of growth.

You seem to have missed a pretty important meeting at some point.

I'll palm your face Willie. All the way to the bank.

Oh, you know they are... I use lotion. Baby lotion.

Fascist?

What. The. F**k.

Must. Control. Fist of Death.
