New Discoveries About Jupiter's Moon Europa to Be Announced Wednesday

Scientists will announce new findings about Jupiter's intriguing moon Europa during a NASA press conference Wednesday (Nov. 16).

One of the moon's most exciting features is an ocean of salty water thought to exist beneath its frozen surface. Because liquid water is thought to be necessary for life, many researchers hope microbial organisms may survive in this buried sea.

Overall, Europa is slightly smaller than Earth's moon, and is thought to have an iron core and a rocky mantle.

they need to televise these more often. Knowledge is power

I, for one, welcome our new Jupitian Microbial Overlords.

THAT'S NO MOON!

How long until we can artificially collide Io and Europa?

THEY HAVE BEEN WATCHING FOR SOME TIME

I believe the correct term is Jovian.

Yeah, but that will get confusing with all the other gas giants we refer to as Jovian Planets. I just went on the basis that we'd call life from Mars 'Martian'...

Every time there's a big space announcement it's usually always a let down, let's hope it's something good this time.

YEP, IT'S WOOD.

But yeah, pretty boring announcement now that we know what it is. I mean aside from this term "chaos terrain" for a thing I already knew about, I learned nothing.

Isn't Europa the one that gets tugged on by the gravity from Jupiter as well as the other moons, and that was the reason for its volcanic activity? Basically the planet gets squashed frequently. That couldn't be it because we've already known that for a while.

Or am I thinking of Io?

You're thinking of Io. Europa is covered with a layer of ice something like 50 miles thick and is believed to have a vast liquid ocean beneath that. It's the best candidate anywhere in our solar system for extraterrestrial life besides Mars.

Europa always has intrigued me, I like to imagine there is an ocean of huge fantastic alien sea creatures under there. Or at least some microbial life :D

Yeah it almost never involves space lasers, what the eff science.

That is mildly interesting... but I wish they'd stop announcing their announcements. Every time we all want it to be extraterrestrial life (especially if they mention that it's about Europa). But it's not. And then it happens over and over again. And all the news that might be pretty-cool ends up sounding lame because it's not nearly as awesome as extraterrestrial life.
The only one that was ever remotely close was when they found the bacteria using arsenic in its DNA, and that was still on Earth ;(.

Yeah I thought it'd be much bigger news, but nonetheless someday when we're much older we may be able to watch web cams from the planet or something cool like that

Guess it's how they keep more than just people with a deep interest in other planets giving a f*ck, playing on the want for it to be otherworldly life and all.

It's like cock teasing but with Science.
