"The effort to define the term "planet" took a fresh twist today as two competing proposals were put forth at a meeting of astronomers in Prague. In one case, Pluto would be demoted to "dwarf planet" status, which would mean it would not be a real planet at all. Astronomers are split down the middle on the issue."

Guess they are split 50-50 on the decision. Honestly, pluto is just a hunk of rock about the size of our moon... but just the fact that we have all been brought up learning about Pluto being a planet has stirred some debate.

What do you guys think?

What has Pluto ever done for us? Demote the ****er I say!

Yes, because if pluto counts then there are about 30 other planets to add to our solar system. I believe there is a new definition on 'what a planet is', so we may be welcoming 'Xena' onto the stage soon. Down with pluto, too small & too cold.

12 planets
8 classic
4 dwarfs

lol
have they chosen names for the 3 new planetoids?

Xena is a stupid name. Just change one of the other planets to the name Pluto.

Or just leave Pluto as a damn planet.

Sod Pluto! What about those planets that rotated (God, no school made me forget the proper word lol) around each other?

Now that's funky.

As long as they don't put the naming of planets to a vote...

One planet named after Chuck Norris
One named after something to do with which country can vote the most
One juvenile planet (Sex, boobies, mi-anus, etc...)

There already is one, Uranus.

Hehe Im the only one that dont care.. Maybe the other ones cares so little they dont even click their way in here even less bother to vote. \o/

Don't f*cking get me started on planets! Planets are just bloody asteroids who think they're so f*cking important. "Oh, I'm so big, I have an atmosphere and life. LOOK AT MY SHINY F*CKING RINGS AND PERFECT F*CKING ORBIT". It's all f*cking political. Just look at science fiction. Asteroids, what happens? They're either getting the way of our spaceships or crashing into our planets and NASA has to send up some celebrities on a suicide mission. Then look at planets, they get such a great f*cking rep'. They have nice resources and some aliens to steal tech' off. Sure there might be a hostile alien race or two but we just kill 'em all and take all they're stuff and we're better off in the end. Marvel are the only ones who even dare portray planets in a negative way with them being eaten, or talking and being asswipes but everyone else is too afraid to be called a celestialist! **** SAKE IT MAKES ME SO ****ING MAD!!!!

How did you get so many posts, ríomhaire? Last time I checked, you had less than 5000.

Holy shit! 8,000! I'm gobsmaked! Well...I haven't had much to do over the summer

what will be the name of the next planet? goofy?

****ing over planets here and forcing our over planets to lose their status, pluto had to wait like 200 years to be recognised as a planet and now these immigrant planets have took it away bastards.

I believe that Pluto will become a Pluton (Dwarf Planet), which in my mind still remains part of the planetary family. I voted yes for demotion, but if it remains a planet, the better.

Apparently Charon and Ceres are being promoted to Pluton's. (In classical sense, charon was Pluto's moon, but due to circumstances involving gravitational relations between them, it was promoted from saterlite to Pluton).

Before anyone asks, no, Lunar won't be promoted to planet because the gravtational relationship with Earth

The next planet should be called Persephone (staying faithful to Arthur C Clarke and Joss Whedon)

Pluto shall be clasified just a planetoid it has only 0,7% of earth's volume and just a 0,2% of our planet mass.Down with it.

I voted to keep pluto as a planet, but essentially it doesn't matter. it won't stop it from orbiting the sun and containing 3 moons.

Jupitor or saturn Could say the same thing about us.

I heard they're abolishing planets in favour of Classics, Plutons and Croutons.

Pluto has an odd orbit in more ways than one. But I I'd say either leave Pluto as a planet or call Charon and Pluto twin planets.

Well, we've grown up thinking there are nine planets, and a lot of textbooks will have to be changed.
However Glenn is right. Usually it would be too small to be classified as a planet.

If planets were Sterotypes, Pluto would be the emo kid. Get rid of it, I say!

does it really matter? i mean it's still what it is whatever you call it.

Sphere doesn't move, call this a sun(Can't call it hot cuz it could have died)

Ok, Sphere goes around Sun. I say this should be a planet.

Sphere goes around planet. I say this should be a moon.

I win!

way to miss the point... maybe you should look at that pole again.

Indeed, i believe its Pluto that has the eliptical orbit, meaning its not circular like all the larger planets do. Eliptical orbits are associated with comets i think or so i remember, adding another argument to that Pluto is an imposter planet.

Can anyone remember the object between Earth and Mars, probably part of the asteriod belt which under this new definition may be considered a planet? Not sure of its name, but having a new neighbour make me laugh.

'Look who moved in next door honey!'

K let me try to put this in simpler terms for you.
Pluto goes around the sun. It should be a planet. There are no subcategories in my book.

Idk if Pluto has moons or not, but if it does than it is a planet, if not than f*** it. I'm pretty sure Pluto has moons.. right?

While we're at it why don't we change all the other ****ing planet names just to appease modern society. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Neptune and all the others are just toooo archaic. Oh, and named after gods too... so lets change em, right?

:E

Charon is the big one and then two smaller ones.

i understood perfectly you rude bastard, but the question is whether it should be a dwarf planet or not. and sorry to dissapoint you but i don't think the worlds astronemers refer to 'your book'.

Leave Pluto alone. Jesus, it's not hurting anybody out there, so far removed from the sun, all cold and lonesome, then some jerkwad scientists have to go and start belittling it saying it's too small, it's no bigger than our moon, that it's a "dwarf planet"...what a-holes. Pluto was just minding its own (cold, tiny) business and now they're going to take away the only solace it has? Well f you, science!

PLUTO IS A PLANET FOREVER!

Pssh, they're always picking on the little guy/planet/pen0r.

YES!

I was trying to find their site. Now to bombard them with random acts of kindness.
