I modified my avatar a little bit, to transparent PNG format, please tell me does it show transparent to you, or with two gray lines (I can't check with Opera here at work)

2 grey lines.

Can't you use .gif format to have a transparent bg?

I'm just messing around, trying PNG out, no I can't use GIF since it has no alpha channel, just plain one color marked as transparent.

Doesn't work with IE... but as you said works with opera.

Ok, made a new one, looks ok with IE and perfect with Opera/Netscape/Mozilla

Man, your ave is getting fuked up. Change it to something characteristic.

Strange, so IE isn't able to display transparency in PNG? Interesting.

Looks fine in Firebird by the way, cool avatar.

Just testing, I'll change it to something better soon.

I'm switching to Opera... because of this one feature... seriously.

So THAT'S why it didn't work (I tried a PNG avatar as well)... stupid IE... I'm gonna get Firebird today... I heard the tab thingy is neat.

Tabs? Like in Opera?

EDIT: I'm using WindowBlinds in that picture.

Yeah, I think it's like that...

Hey, I just noticed some other things about Opera...

> There is a Next Thread button (or Shift+X) that goes to the next newest thread in a forum.
> If you right-click highlighted text (or double-click on a word) on a page it brings up a menu that looks up the text/word in a dictionary, encyclopedia, translator, or even a search engine (defaults to Google).
> It has built-in skin support.
> The interface is more easily customized than Internet Explorer.
> You can zoom in on the page.
> You can make the page look like how it would on a PDA (by pressing Shift+F11).
> You can use mouse gestures for quickly doing all kinds of operations.

... and that's just several things I've notice in the hour or so that I've been using Opera. I'd better read the documentation to see what else it can do.

Opera easily makes Internet Explorer its bitch.

Eh. Firebird has most of that which Opera supports, best of all Firebird has extensions that allow for all sorts of customization.

Plus, doesn't Opera have adverts on the browser if you DL the free version?

I would pay $20 (student discount for Opera) to replace IE... but I'll try Firebird before I do that.

Farvid, cool av. Just wondering how you made it. I know how to use Paint Shop Pro pretty good, but these alpha channels things screw with me. Can you tell me how you made it?

You can add transparency to images in many ways...

I usually start with two layers (so I can see exactly what it will look like on different colors). The background layer is what you will see through the transparent parts of the top layer.

From there you can add transparency to the top layer by either making a greyscale image to apply as an alpha mask or just using the erasor (with less than 100% strength). The latter is easier.

After you're done just delete the background layer and save the image into a format that support transparency.

god damn it. Ive been trying to make my damn av transparent but I keep getting a stupid white background. Im using opera. Ive tried both .gif and .png. no dice. CAN ANYONE HELP?

IE doesn't support .png transparency, because IE sucks ass. I don't know if that's been stated earlier.

shuzer, the only advert in opera is one banner add in the top right, and i dont even notice it. in my personal experience, i have found oper to be a much better browser.

I'd rather have an ad-free browser with all the same features that's free of cost and developed by the Firebird community rather than one with an ad in the corner that costs money. :)

..eh? I'm talking about Firebird, LT. It's Mozilla, not Microsoft. What're you saying?

oh, well I like spreading for microshaft, it's the only action i get anymore.

Well, I tried, Terminator... but even using .PNG format I get some white spots on the edges... :flame:

My avatar is just a GIF. I took the two different colors of the backgrounds on this forum, found the average of the two, faded from green to the resulting color, then made the rest 100% transparent. It's the closest you can get with IE.
