I'm a little curious about the CP raid in the tenement house in Point Insertion. They seem to be killing everybody in the whole building, for no apparent reason. They certainly don't know who Gordon is, so there's no reason to assume that his presence caused the raid.

So, why are they killing everyone? Is that a typical purge or something in City 17?

I doub't they were killing everyone. They were equipped with stun batons after all.

Humanity is under strict, oppressive control. So the tenement raid could really be anything. Maybe aroused by a suspect (Gordon), maybe they thought there was suspicious activity, or maybe they were just "checking up" on things.

According to the overwatch voice, they were raiding the area because sensors had picked up one extra life form that wasn't supposed to be in there. They were probably trying to find whoever that was (you), but also taking down all the civilians at the same time assuming they were hiding you.

Yeah they didnt take the whole place down beacuse it was Gorden Freeman but just because there was an extra person. Very stict about apartments I suppose.

I have two theories.

Gordon was supposed to be on the train to the Nova Prospekt. When they notice him he's missing, they start a raid to hunt him down.

Other they have restrictions on going from point a to point b. The city divided into zones, so maybe Gordon (or someone else) was not supposed to go there (pretty much like the security clearance system used in the Black Mesa).

Like Vectyr said, the voice says that the Combine noticed that there was an extra person on the building. To the Combine, that could mean some Rebel meeting with the Civies.

Hers my .02
well, the Combine knows of civil protection, right?
so,they send metrocops to raid all of the apartments that are under suspicion
and kill all of the people that stay there, and YES,they kill them, watch how a person flies through the air like a dead soldier after being hit by a stick, and they do this since, well, how does it look when the most powerful entities in the universe are wrong?

indeed^ hence the word stun

i agree that they were on the lookout for him since well hes not suppose to be there.

Civil Protection works for the Combine...

then why do civilians always talk about joining them in a low tone, like they don't want the combine to hear?
this I never understood...

I think they don't want other civilians hearing them. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be very kind to anyone joining the force that's been oppressing me for 10 (20?) years.

Those "stun batons" certainly seem to kill Gordon when they're used on him.

That seems like a reasonable explanation. I could never understand what the voice was saying.

I believe Barney's statement about Gordon heading for Nova Prospekt is a joke saying that he was going to be sent there and turned into a stalker.

Plus, as one of the train passengers notes, he doesn't remember seeing Gordon get on the train, which would indicate that he was placed there by the G-Man and, in fact, isn't supposed to be there at all from the Combine's perspective.

Uh... what? They stun him. That's because they're stun batons. Ever get hit by them? They just deal a glancing white blow, and that's it.

The train through the gates that you don't go through leads to Nova Prospekt. It's written on the walls and stuff.

But only after you get the HEV suit. Before then, the only way to die is fall off the roof.

But they do kill that guy at the end who tries to lock the door, when you get onto the roof.

And then they start shooting at you.

Actually after you hear them smash the door down there are shots fired, on the guy holding the door I presume, just listen carefully and you'll hear them.

My theory is that the Combine know exactly how many people are supposed to be in the city, and then a miscount was detected in the block without a citizen missing somewhere else.

Yes. :|

Yeah right when you get off the train a scanner takes a pic of you, I think right then is when they figure out someone is in town that isnt supposed to be. But you have to think it takes a min or two for all of the CP's to get that information.

I think they knew about it as soon as the scanner took his picture, which was why he was going to Nova Prospekt before Barney stepped in.

When I played it, before I reached the tenement building I intentionally angered a CP and he gave me quite the beatdown with the stick. Red screen with me lying on the ground and everything.

The area was already under alert (you can see various people lined up by the cops already, plus the two guys talking about other places getting raided) so it was being monitered. Gordon's pressence caused a "miscount" because there were now more people there than there should have been so the Combine came down on the place like a tonne of bricks. When Gordon attempts to escape, he is declaired an anticitizen and is hunted.

Wasn't there an investigation going on? Remember, just before you enter there, that guy says, 'They'll lock down the entire building..' thing, so maybe it was that? That's the reason I saw.

This also fits in with the "G-Man put you in at just the right time" idea- Alyx would have been in the area because of the investigation (maybe the Combine were looking for her?).

When you red screened you're simply stunned and disposed of or interrogated and killed offscreen.

That's my theory on what happens after "stundeath" anyway.

They aren't supposed to be killing people. It's supposed to appear as though they are being stunned. Valve did, in my opinion, a fairly cheap fix, where they set stunstick damage to be equal to that of the health of a regular citizen so that they will die in a single hit, specifically for the raid scene. It doesn't convincingly look as though they're being stunned to me, and there should have been struggling and falling to the ground and crawling behavior once they were hit, but I suppose it wasn't really worth developing when you're only going to see Civil Protection stunning people once in the game.

As for the red screen, that isn't supposed to happen. The player is invulnerable until he reaches Kleiner's lab, so something went wrong on your end.

But I suppose that for the sake of argument we could say that stun stick or no stun stick, beat someone on the head with a longish metal object long enough and they will indeed die.

Before you get the HEV suit you still have 100 hp, it just doesn't show it. So if you take 100 damage or more from their batons, you will die. It's happened to me lots of times.

You regenerate. Like in Portal.

You can only die if you take sustained damage.

Edit: So no, you don't have "hp"

yeah, but thats bringing real world physics (and medical science :p) into a fictional game. Doesnt work.

As for stun sticks. I think its actual invulnerability, since I have managed to get those guys to constantly hit me with their stun sticks and I havent died.

Killing spree!?

Naw, just a daily raid you guys.
