Just a poll to guage interest in this idea.

A while back I made a thread where I'd keep all my work in, to try keep things neater, and a few others followed on with the same idea. So it got me to thinking. How would you feel if the more active/popular members had their own special sticky or even section for just their own work. Course we couldn't allow it for just anyone, only a certain level and higher would pass to avoid it getting silly with lots of stuck threads or sections for just anyone.

Vote now :p

Its a very good idea, but I don't think it would work in forum form. It would proberly need to work something like devinatART. Here is my Idea.

Each media forum section like music, models blah blah blah. Has a list of names down one side. These will be all the users with small devinatART like pages. Inside each peace of work commenting is avalible.

You could also do this for mods and turn halflife2.net into a mini moddb.

I was thinking more along the lines of conceptart.org not deviantart thingy

sounds good to me. If only I had enough surviving artwork to fill up my own thread :(

do it.

If the idea is popular enough, will probably make a new thread where anyone who wants can enter five of their own images or so, the best ones are given the special threads, or sections.. I'd prefer sections, a place for each of the artists to just put work in of all kinds.

as long as you don't judge the best artists like blue peter and choose the picture of the headless, legless, bodyless elephant scribbled in felt pen by joey deacon jnr.
Or TVR_fan.

yep, any kind of art would be allowed.. well within reason of course.

Teehee, you just want it for yourself, eh? (Kidding, of course)

I think its a great idea; we have lots of awesomely talented artists on this site like The Dark Elf, Crom, RJMC's awesome ass clay models, CrazyHarij, and probably a lot more that I missed and will remember right after the edit button dissappears. :p It would be cool to make them all obligated to show us all of their stuff! :)

Go for it, woo!

But bring back the contests, too :(

Start submitting names of users too, so we know who to look for, and so they have a chance to get some work together to show off with.

I'll say CROM, CptStern, Evil and Sidious would be good bets for their own gallery type section thingyboblet.

Members I would like to see have their own little sections:
The Dark Elf
Cpt Stern
Yakuza
Snowball
EVIL
Innvervision###
<RJMC>
cr0m
CrazyHarij (get him to come back ;))
vegeta
more that I'm not thinking of ;)

What if we also had a Hall of Fame subforum, or something like that? Make it so that users cannot make new threads in there, but could post in the existing threads that only mods could move there. It might be a good idea since we have some not-so-frequent members that post awesome things, but just once (like sidious). This way they would have their one work stuck somewhere, since they wouldn't be able to update their sections. We could also put the winners of the weekly art contests in there, too. :)

(Like the ConceptArt hall of fame)

What's the point...?

Just give them a thread, why a whole section :|

If anything, there own section would just mean that LESS people would see their work, as the art forum doesn't have as many regulars as the general forums, and splitting the art forum up would just make it harder to navigate.

Anyone who's really good should, its only fair they get to show off their work then, and if they want a mod team to see what they can do, its easier to find their work.

I agree. An entire section/subforum/whatever per artist? Last time I checked this was a forum, not an art gallery. What's wrong with using a single big thread and just bumping it when there's an update? As far as I know the method worked fine for your art thread.

Have to say i agree with this...i think it would be better to have a single "Anything Goes" thread or possibly one thread per medium type (e.g. Non-CG, 2DCG, 3DCG and Video/Animation).

My reason for voting for this type of thread as opposed to a thread per Artist is that there are some artists on these boards who's medium of choice limits them to producing just a few pieces every so often - for example, my medium of choice is 3DCG and CG Animation, and to make anything in these mediums can take months to do (depending on complexity).

Bottom line...a thread per artist could encourage quantity but not necessarily quality. ;)

Hmm somewhere along the line someone must have said you had to churn out tons of art per week, would explain why people are thinking thats the case :p

Anyway I've already tried the anything goes type thread, and it just ended up any old thread :(

The one I suggested is the artists would have their own section, update it when they want, make tutorials and so on. Keeps things neater and lets those who have the special section feel "noticed" rather than their work buried among lots of other threads, which could start getting busy after HL2 arrives.

ok, how bout a sticky thread like your random doodles one for all pro artists (who do it for a living I mean), and another for beginners/intermediates. Any unrelated or potentially spammy crap or stuff in the wrong thread deleted, bit like the 'Information from valve only' thread in the main forum but with reasonable praise or criticism accepted.
Saves creating a whole new section, I don't mind sharing a thread with others of my kind, and keeps us all in here where it's nice and warm :)
If the 2 threads grow to a point where they become 'mongous, then stick them in their own section.

could do that, the problem though is the comments, they end up overrunning the thread, and for a thread with lots of work from lots of artists, with lots of comments for each one, thats gonna be a bitch to navigate and clean up, like the info from valve thread.

different subforum/sections and it should be possible to give each artist mod abilities perhaps for their own section, to keep it clean themselves

or something along those lines hehehe

yeah, 'spose - keeping an eye on spam magnet threads can be a real bitch.

I for one don't have enough to show or the time to create anything new so a whole thread just for me wouldn't be justified. Would be happy to share one with somebody else who has lots of stuff though.

Sounds cool!

As long as I get my own thread. :p

No. I'm serious. You'd better ****ing do it.

Hello, i just lurked around abit and saw this thread.

This idea is probably the most genius one you've had for as long as I've seen, TheDarkElf

I've upped my productivity meter in drawing alot lately, having a thread or section where I could post my stuff, sketches and full drawings would be fantastic. there are probably other forums where I could do this but I don't know, I'm more "comfortable" with this forum and this section is pretty big now. I could slip in a few tips, do tutorials and "guides", to help people out and give tips and tricks, perhaps try encouraging newbies to start drawing aswell. most art-oriented forums are already filled to the brim with pro's so you can't help and give advice as much..

then again, I don't know how much skill and amount of posts would be required.. i could probably come up with at least one sketch a day though, perhaps do something bigger every couple of days.

the best thing about this idea however is that I'm convinced it's a biiig encouragement to draw more, especially each day and up your productivity and efficiency meter to the max, so to speak.

If you've come this far, thanks for reading. i'm not going to stay around, i'm in a hurry.. i just wanted to input my opinion on this as i definitely love it, i hope it gets put into action. I wouldn't be able to scan anything with this current oldbie computer so it doesn't matter, but I'll check back in the future when my own computer has returned from repair and see if you've done anything with this idea :)

Allright, how about a subforum in Art and Design with the artist-sections in it? I'm not sure if you can chain up that many forums in vB, but it would avoid the clutter in the main A&D forum. If all those subforums are created directly inside A&D, my mousewheel will soon erode away because I'll have to scroll past 15 subsection links.

So what I mean is:
Main Forum index -> A&D -> Artist Sections -> Bob the Artist's section
... instead of ...
Main Forum index -> A&D -> Bob the Artist's section

that was the plan yes, we'd need to do it like that otherwise it would get confusing with the contest stuff.

i want a thread which i can edit and always find so my things dont get lost and spread over the forums! i could put the spraypack and some neat 3d wallpapers in it!

^^ i think by this he means a joint thread. after all, i usually copy whatever he draws... i get all my inspirations from him lol :D he draws aliens, i draw aliens. he draws giant robot, i draw giant robot. he draws anime...etcetera :p i guess we just have similar intrests, except he watches more movies and stuff.

hes also the one that introduced me to HL2.net... in actual fact the only reason i joined this forum was to participate in the art contest lol ;)

Need to do a vote at some point to see who the best artists are on the forum I'm guessing.

alternatively we could have a thread for every aspect of art... a pencil art thread, digital art thread, animation thread, wallpaper thread etc... that way we could all have a go at posting our art, and it wouldnt leave anyone out... but each thread would only have about 3 or 4 people posting art in there, so it would become kindof personal.

i cba going through deleting discussion posts

there weren't supposed to be any in the random sketch thread, look what happened there.
