Portal 2 Event at E3 Cancelled – Replaced by…’Surprise’

I am willing to bet my left testicle that its ep3. Not even kidding.

Quoted for posterity, and so we can come back and laugh at the guy with one ball.

Remember how we all waited for Episode 3 footage last year, and then Valve released Episode 3 in 2009?

That was awesome.

So to clarify...the original event was cancelled and replaced with this one running for the 3 days of E3. Oh and the organiser for the original event has left Valve and Doug has taken over (unrelated circumstances though).
Maybe Robin Walker fired her for not including enough hats in the event?

So I know all the reasons why it is unlikely for Ep3 info to be released but its kinda interesting how they updated Portal and then shortly after said hey Portal 2. Now they have updated all the "recent" HL games...which if memory serves me right is the first time in years and now this.

Maybe they want to build suspense (hahah...) and maybe they want to continue doing it during E3 (with the few people in the viewing room) cause Ep3 is still a year or two away. If this is right they might show both games and maybe clarify the HL-Portal connection (if any). I remember Gabe recently talking about the future setting/atmosphere of HL games and maybe this is all a sign of the start of Ep3 info.

It kinda reminds me of the Lost Season 5 promo stuff where Darlton made it so only one fan from Comic Con got to see a video of Daniel Faraday-Peter Chang in the 70s...and used that person to release the video to the public. Maybe this is Valves way of creating suspense for BOTH games.

Hey guys, remember when there was going to be an Episode 4?

implying Valve updated the HL2 games to build suspense for Ep3
implying they didn't do it because HL2 was just released for Mac
This straw grasping has got to stop. IT HAS GOT TO STOP. There was a point where it should have stopped and clearly we have passed it.

You can't ignore the signs.

E3 2010: You have the first 3 and then "2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3". It all points to Episode 3.

IIRC Valve said there was to be a Forth Episode but it wasn't directly related to the main three. Perhaps it was Portal? Or did they hire the DigiPen students after that?

PC Gamer 2007 interview:
Gabe Newell said:
Inside Valve, two teams will be responsible for finishing Episodes 1-3, a triumvirate that Newell says will wrap up Half-Life 2's current story arc. Episodes 1 and 2 began development simultaneously by seperate teams; when Episode 1 goes live, its team will shift gears to Episode 3. Episode 4 will have a stand along plot and is being developed outside Valve
I really don't think this is happening anymore.

Lest we forget, this is the same PC Gamer that interpreted Gabe's earliest hints about Episode One as an Opposing Force-esque Alyx expansion, mistook the laser-bridges in citadel screenshots as the gmod-style gravity gun's beam and reported the earliest leaks about EA's Dead Space as the third coming of System Shock. 'Episode Four' was probably a new watercooler being shipped to the company lobby by a local courier firm.

Nah, Gabe announced that a 3rd-party company related to Valve would be working on an Episode 4. It got canceled around the time EPISODE TWO AND THREE TOOK FOREVER TO MAKE TO BEGIN WITH.

See, episode 2 at least came out the next year...it's been 3 years since ep2 came out.

It's been so long...maybe they ARE working on HL3. Not saying that's what they'll announce at E3 but it's a long time for a game as long as the other episodes.

I'm holding you to that. I have a knife you can use... And a drumstick to put between your teeth so you don't bite your tongue off.

Waiting for half life 2 was where i learned my lesson trying to see what valve is doing. But my honest opinion has been said already. I think that after the first 2 episodes came out they had some other ideas that they wanted to pursue(left 4 dead 1 and 2, portal 2, possibly something else) and they shelved episode 3. I honestly dont think that they started really working on it until l4d 2 was out. They possibly still aren't working on it.

Oh and i definitely dont think the suprise is ep3

It's 100% not ep 3 as the surprise is about portal 2. It says in the e-mail.

How many more times does it need to be said?

Yeah, the key word in that sentence was surprise xdrive. It could be about TF3 for all we know.

Portal 2 is not a surprise anymore. Sure, there can be new secrets and new info about the game, but I wouldn't rule out something new from Valve.

Nope.

Nope.

Doug said:
If you'd like to ask fruitless questions about the E3 Portal 2 surprise

The surprise is about Portal 2.

Once again i find myself repeating myself.

I don't think you understand the concept of a "surprise".

I do.

It states in the e-mail the surprise is about portal 2. I find it amazing you are trying to say it's not when it says it is.

I recall my brother telling me, back in '06, that they're doing the new Half-Life games in episodes & that there would be like 6, with a new one coming out every 6 months.

& I believed him.

I do.

I'm saying it *might* not be, as that would be *more surprising*. What's so difficult to understand?

But what i quoted says that the surprise is about portal 2. So it will be about portal 2. It no where suggests that "it might not be"

If you say the surprise is in regards to something, it will be in regards too that something.

A: "Hey, you said that the surprise was about Portal 2, but you are speaking about (other subject here). WTF?"

B: "Surprise!"

A: "Hey, you said that the surprise was about Portal 2, but you are speaking about (other subject here). WTF?"

B: "Surprise!"

That won't happen as it specifically says the surprise is about portal 2.

You did your best Paul, and it's more than what most sane people would have done.

What's all the fuss about. The surprise is the goddamn cake you get at the presentation, that's all.

I give up.

I give up as well.

Your trying to say it may not be about portal 2. It is about portal 2, you will see for yourself.

Your another one of the people trying to hold onto hope that it is ep3

What if they just released that, because they read these forums and love to see everyone fighting about ep3. (dance puppets, dance!!!)
