Portal 2: Lab Rat - Part 2, Out Now!

The connection between HL and Portal is just a cameo, to me. In Portal, writers couldn't resist the temptation of quoting and referencing HL, but we shouldn't read too much into that. Neither should we expect a rigid and coherent timeline. Portal has to be considered a stand-alone franchise.

This.

I believe the references to Black Mesa seen throughout the course of the game (e.g. the performance charts seen in various offices) are merely devices used to enforce the image we are given of Aperture Science, which is that of arrogance and an almost desperate need to be ahead in their field (which was their undoing in the end), while at the same time giving players something familiar, and the context, rather funny to relate to.

Uhhhh, did you play Episode 2?

I remember someone at Valve saying there is no true connection between the games in an interview.

I don't think Valve predicted the amount of detective work people would be doing in finding a connection between Portal and Half-life :p

Portal 2 is set hundreds of years into the future..a long time after the events of HL2+episodes. We can assume that the combine conflict would've been resolved by now. I mean surely the combine would've discovered the remnants of the lab by that time and made use of the technology.
Unless Valve has plans for Gordon to be put into stasis again, it's likely there will be no references to him or any other familiar HL character in P2. I think Valve still have a lot on their plate to work with, there's still room for character development and scrapping the relationships they have built up that would be a bad move. I do hope P2 will reveal something about the state of the outside world, but I wouldn't try to overinterpret any of it.

As to the lab rat comic and the black mesa stuff there... It's not supposed to be such a tease really...Being BM's competitors, they would've most likely tried to reverse-engineer their technology or alternatively succeeded in stealing their design plans.

you know I swear to God I remember an interview long time ago when Gabe said that the two stories will soon be very interconnected.

I remember someone saying the contrary, but everything is possible. Only time will tell.

that was more recent, but i'm hoping they're lying for some reason.

On another note..Valve revealed that the co-op campaign occurs AFTER the events of the main Portal 2 storyline.
Isn't that already a major spoiler revealing that Glados will survive the events of the main game?
Oops. o_o

In the trailer, you see that Glados is again running the game in the coop campaign

yeah I know that- I was refering to the thing about it happening after the singleplayer.

big spoilers, speaking of which, you shoulda used spoiler tags

Sorry, my bad.

Still, Valve tends to be inconsistent with their public statements about timelines and what is and isn't cannon.
And there's also the fact that nobody's played the game yet hehe.

How are you so sure its set hundreds of years into the future? Because valve said so? Please, an old school valve guy should know to take what valve says with a grain of salt. By saying that were automatically assuming the good guys won and earth is still around. For all we know, all of portal 2 could be in statis.

Plus the Borealis reference in achievements... I doubt a ship would be around 200 years later. I would not be surprised if the portal gun leaves the aperture science facility :).

However, this is unquestionably cannon:
